segamebgeh wrote:Anyone have any advice on attending Admitted Students' Weekend if you've already decided you're going? I went to UChicago undergrad, so I know what the neighborhood/campus is like. I'd have to use some vacation days from work to attend and plane tickets from where I live will be at least $300 more than the reimbursement limit. Is it like orientation, where people make close friends or, because a fair amount of people won't attend anyway, is it not really worthwhile if you've sent in your deposit beforehand? Thanks!
I know people who made great friends at ASW, and people have a lot of fun there.

I didn't go, though, and I found it pretty easy to make friends.

We do a lot of activities at orientation specifically designed to get people to bond, meet people they otherwise wouldn't meet, make friends, etc.

From what I can tell, most people in 1L are either friendly with each other or friends at this point. It's really easy to be social here.

Anyone have any supplement recommendations for Income Tax? I'm taking it with Roin if that makes a difference

Any thoughts on Bankruptcy with Casey (TF) or Patent Law with Masur (MWTH)? I'm trying to decide which one to take?

Thought both were good, think it's more about which style of prof you like.

Acing Income Tax. As an endorsement, I pulled that 177 despite not knowing what basis was two days before the final.

Hi all! Thanks so much for taking questions.

It looks like there's been a lot of discussion ITT about Shoreland & Regents but less about Del Prado. Are there any current Del Prado residents who can comment on how they like it?

Particularly, I'm interested in thoughts on safety, convenience (especially parking/transportation), and utilities cost, esp. in the winter. I read several Yelp reviews that mention bad drafts from the AC units and am wondering if that problem has been addressed. Finally, I'm pretty phobic of bugs, so if you've seen them lurking often please warn me

Thanks again!

I lived in Del Prado last year:

-Safety: As safe as any building in Hyde Park. Sometimes the walk to regents can be a little bit sketchy late at night, but it's never been a problem and I don't know anyone who has had a problem there safety-wise

-Convenience: it is right off of the 171 stop, the bus stops right outside the building. Also, there's a nice coffee shop in the lobby and only two blocks away from chipotle. I didn't have a car so I'm not sure about parking

-Cost: the overall building rent is pricier than a lot of Hyde Park, but the utilities in winter aren't too pricey. I really do think you get what you pay for though, it's a great option. Never had any draft problems either. Also, I never saw any bugs in the apartment.

Hope that helps!

Thank you!! Very helpful.

Hoping street parking in the area isn't too bad as $150/month seems steep to pay for an outdoor lot.

Not sure for Del Prado, but free street parking is available in the area between 53rd to 55th, but sometimes you have to circle for two or three blocks.

Basically asked this in the c/o 19 thread, but would you recommend commuting via the Metra or the bus? Also, are there any apartments in the loop/south loop area anyone would suggest?

Metra is faster but less convenient location-wise. Most people do the 2 or the 6 to go to/from Hyde Park depending on the time and where in the neightborhood they are. Metra also doesn't get transfers with the rest of CTA so unless you're right by it or good with a lot of walking you'll end up paying more.

I don't live up there but a ton of law students seem to be in the Park Michigan.

I'm pretty biased as I'm nearing my 10th anniversary in Hyde Park, and I know you weren't asking for advice on this, but I'd probably recommend most people to live in the neighborhood for 1L. Lot more convenient during a year that you likely won't have a ton of free time, and makes outside-of-school socializing easier. Doing trivia at the pub on 59th with friends was one of the few things that kept me sane first year. Different story if you've lived in the city before, though.

It was the only thing that kept me sane first year. The lack of decent Indian food in HP is my only real knock on it.

Thanks so much for all of the advice. I quickly realized the downsides of not living in Hyde Park, but will be living with my SO who is attending a different program at another school in the city and their commute between there and HP would be killer so we're viewing the area in question as a compromise

I know it's common to move up north as a 2L or 3L, but can anyone speak to what it would be like living on the north side as a 1L?

I'd be moving to Chicago with an SO for whom it wouldn't make sense to live in Hyde Park, plus I used to live in Chicago and would love to return to old neighborhoods and be able to see old friends from time to time. Would be bringing a car--my guess is I'd probably alternate between driving to class 3 days a week and taking public transit 2 days a week. Looking primarily at lakeview/lincoln park and logan square/wicker park.

Would I be completely isolated/miss out on a ton of experiences by not spending the first year in Hyde Park? And would I be too exhausted from the commute to function?

One downside of being in the actual city (and related to your tar): deep dish pizza is on point up there.

Living that far north would blow. I don't know when the last time you drove through Chicago was, but the Jane Byrne's currently under perma-construction which results in massive traffic jams, so I definitely would not live in logan square. Lakeview might be more doable, and you'd be close to a lot of bar reviews which would be nice but you'd still be dealing with a long ass commute every day.

If you really don't want to live in Hyde Park, I think South Loop makes a lot of sense. You can walk to the L and get anywhere in the city and you don't have to fight traffic through the city driving to/from school. I realize it's not the coolest of Chicago neighborhoods, but, well, if cool were the most important thing in life you wouldn't be going to law school.

Just a 0L here, but I'm facing a similar situation and luckily have had a lot of success with the company that UC and other schools in the area use to help people find housing, Student Space. Trying to decide between Crim Pro (McAdams) and Evidence (Buss). Any thoughts on either?

Zillow is also a good website to use for housing in Hyde Park/South Loop/anywhere else in Chicago
