I am definitely not taking off time from work to do that shit, and I am already scheduled to start the Monday following finals. It sounds like it doesn't really bestow that big of an advantage for someone who really just wants to go the corporate track and avoid litigation completely (and maybe even go back into consulting if transactional legal work ends up sucking for some reason), so I am going to go the TemporarySaint route (minus the vacation :( ).

Input appreciated by this 0L as well. If LR is something you decide to shoot for, just what grade range is going to be necessary? All 180+?

It depends based on the grade distribution that year and the number of people that do the write on. 2/3rd is grade-on. Last year, it took a 180.5 to get on. This year, with some different factors (including a bigger law review), it was mid/high 179s.

How do you guys find out what the cutoff is? Is that information released every year?

That information is never released, but it is not very difficult to figure out.

Have any of you with an out-of-state driver's license renewed a license here in Chicago? If so, is there a driving component to the "renewal" process (which will actually be a "creation" process for me since I don't have an Illinois license yet), or is it just a written test? I ask this because I got rid of my car after moving up here, so a driving element could be problematic if I show up without a car. The DMV's website vaguely says: "Pass the appropriate exams (vision screening, written and/or driving)."

Also, on an unrelated note, one of my friends is looking at purchasing real estate in the Hyde Park area, and was being shown various properties by a real estate agent the other day. The agent told my friend that there is a Trader Joe's going in near the CVS/Hyde Park Produce shopping center next year. I tried Googling this and didn't find anything; have any of you all heard about this? I was excited about Whole Foods, but a Trader Joe's would be abso-fucking-lutely fantastic.

For the driver's license part - I did this earlier this year - went from an out-of-state license to an IL license. There is no driving component, BUT you do have to pass a written test (which was surprisingly difficult, make sure you know your road signs). Also, if you're planning on paying by credit card, they don't take Visa for some weird reason, hth.

I know that Vault rankings are solely based on prestige (LinkRemoved) and don't necessarily have anything to do with the difficulty of landing a job at any given firm (e.g., Irell and Munger are much harder to land than MoFo despite being ranked #47, #34, and #24, respectively). However, in general, I had been under the impression that higher Vault ranking = more difficult to land. Of course, a couple of firms having huge summer classes (15 people at Skadden and 13 at Kirkland & Ellis) probably throws the numbers off a bit, but I can't tell if self-selection for prestige is a driving force, or if lower-ranked firms just not hiring anyone is what is causing this skew. For example, does nobody do an SA at a V90+ firm because it is not ranked well, or because it is just difficult to land an SA there? (For some reason I thought that the bars would be arranged the other way so that there were fewer people going to the "top" firms and more people going to lower-ranked firms.)

There are fewer SA positions at lower ranked firms. Since higher ranked hire more SAs, we end up at higher ranked firms. That's pretty sufficient to explain the gap. For example (from our OCI thread, which I'd recommend you read if you're interested):
125 Sullivan
125 Davis
98 Cleary
93 Cravath
81 Paul Weiss
73 Skadden
69 Milbank
65 Debevoise
63 Simpson
53 Weil
51 Cahill
51 Kirkland
40 Shearling
39 Gibson
39 Willkie
36 Latham
30 DLA (multi office)
29 White
28 Ropes
26 Sidley
26 Wachtell
25 Cadwalader
23 Wilmer
22 Jones Day
21 Kaye
21 Linklaters
20 Allen Ovary
20 Fried
19 Freshfields
18 Dentons
18 Kramer
17 Clifford Chance
17 Dechert
17 Mayer
17 Proskauer
16 Chadbourne
16 OMM
14 Hogan
13 Covington
11 Paul Hastings
11 Akin
11 Goodwin
11 Morgan Lewis
10 Bingham
10 Greenberg
10 Katten
10 Orrick
9 Pillsbury
8 Alston
8 Arnold
8 Reed Smith
7 Jenner
7 K&L Gates
7 MoFo
7 WInston
5 Baker McKenzie
5 Baker Botts
5 Bracewell
5 SPALDING!!!
4 Arent Fox
4 Blank Rome
4 Bryan Cave
4 Cooley
4 Crowell

As you can see, # of SAs correlates very strongly with vault ranking (with a few exceptions).

Also, there's a lot of reasons you'd choose a highly-ranked firm over a lower one. I think you may be assuming that prestige is the driving force (though I don't doubt it's a consideration).

Yup. S&C is would be basically 1/3 of the Chicago market.

This is why all you 1Ls should keep NYC in mind if your grades aren't amazing--there are just SO MANY MORE jobs in NYC than Chicago.

Is there any sort of veteran's presence at Chicago? A quick glance at the student organizations didn't turn up any clubs.

Not that I know of... Among the 1Ls, I only know 1 American who was in the military for a few years here (there are some Koreans who did the mandatory Korean military thing, but I don't think that is what you're looking for); the average age in the Class of 2016 was 24, and most of the "old" people (who are ~30+, like myself) were doing other stuff (academia, working at companies, etc.) before law school. There might be some other students with military backgrounds that I just don't know about, but my guess is that they are few and far between.

Thanks!

How is UChicago for law students who are definitely committed to doing public interest? Is the school more or less dominated by people who want to do BigLaw? And also, if there are any current students who are planning on going into public interest in the forum, has it been difficult finding opportunities outside of the Midwest for your summer internships, etc.?

Thanks!

Hi all!

I know kappycaft1 is moving to Shoreland, but does anyone have a rough estimate of how many UChi law students currently live there?

Also, if anyone currently lives or has lived in a renovated 1BR or studio at Regents, please PM me.

Thanks!

It was a sick place to live as an undergrad, back when it was dorms. But paying $1100/studio or $1400/1BR? No way I'm leaving a $900/mo 1BR for that.

Thanks!
The Class of 2014 had 201 2Ls; 179 (89%) of them worked at law firms for their 2L summer, and 19 (9.5%) did public interest work. After graduation, 15.3% of the Class of 2011 went into public interest, whereas only 8.4% and 6.0% of the following 2 classes went that route. It seems like there is a lot of self-selection away from public interest when the biglaw market is doing well (or perhaps it is when the PI market is doing poorly), so it is difficult to ascertain how hard it really is to land a position doing PI. Of the people I know who that are doing PI stuff for their 1L summer, most of it is taking place outside of Chicago. Of the 19 students who did PI for their 2L summers last year, only 4 of them stayed in Chicago (plus a 5th person who did half of their summer here and half elsewhere doing PI work). Accordingly, it seems like you are hardly bound to this region if you choose to go that route.

Anyway, those are just the stats; someone else who has actual experience applying for that sort of work will have to tell you how hard it actually is finding a PI position coming out of UChicago.

Despite the creepy-ass deserted hallways, I am really thinking about moving there next year. And I'm bringing some goblets and maps of Europe with me.

Hey 0L here. I have a quick question about proving ties, specifically in the New York market. I don't want to post my personal information out in the open but is anyone willing to answer a PM from me to look at my situation to see if it would be considered a tie?

Go for it. Spoiler alert, it almost certainly is.
