I know it's mainly 1Ls in here, but do you know of any classmates who have landed jobs in LA without incredible grades?

Yes. Several of mine (I'm class of 2013) did. I mean, we don't talk about grades, but folks who had ties to LA and who I'd imagine were around median were able to land in LA with no issues.drawstring wrote:I know it's mainly 1Ls in here, but do you know of any classmates who have landed jobs in LA without incredible grades?

I'm liking Henderson's short answer approach this year though. Or at least I'm liking the idea of it, since we don't have anything concrete to look at to really know how well that works.Jaqen wrote:Same here, heh.Crowing wrote:I still don't get Levmore at all. 2L here that targeted CA exclusively. As Emma pointed out, we don't talk about grades, but several people that got Los Angeles are not on LR. The LR kids that go for LA tend to target two/three firms exclusively, so there isn't a huge amount of competition.drawstring wrote:I know it's mainly 1Ls in here, but do you know of any classmates who have landed jobs in LA without incredible grades?

Does the intricacy of the grading system make 1L relatively more stressful? Also (hoping this isn't too personal, just curious) anyone finding themselves leaning more fiscally conservative / libertarian as a UChi student?

Re: UChi Current Students Taking Questions
I don't think this grading system is more stressful than any other grading system, but that may just be me. I also don't find myself leaning more fiscally conservative or libertarian. It's an interesting question though; why do you ask?rsklnkv515 wrote:Does the intricacy of the grading system make 1L relatively more stressful? Probably more stressful than the pass/high pass pansy shit at HYS. But it seems like a positive overall.rsklnkv515 wrote:Does the intricacy of the grading system make 1L relatively more stressful? Interesting question indeed. I don't think my overall political views have changed, but
- my political stance on legal doctrines has changed (as I've moved from a state of 0% understanding to a state of 2% understanding). Takings jurisprudence makes my blood boil, for example. But I don't know if that's reflective of the school or just how I would've felt anyway.
- unless your views are incredibly well-settled (and mine are not), your justifications for different beliefs will change. So far, I still lean the same way overall, but the way I think about the issues is different.

Re: UChi Current Students Taking Questions
If anything makes 1L more stressful it's the quarter system with 3 sets of exams. I don't think the grading system is inherently more stressful than your typical one.

Yeah, although fortunately the quarter system helps ease the 1Ls in to exams. Having just elements (joke class) and civ pro 1 is a nice low-stakes intro. Well, probably high stakes for your 1L summer job since those are the only grades you'll have, but finding something to do 1L summer is easy.Crowing wrote:If anything makes 1L more stressful it's the quarter system with 3 sets of exams. When you'll really get tired of the extra exam periods is when you're a new 3L and you realize you've already had as many exams and exam periods as students who just graduated at other schools.

I don't know, despite the low-stakes I didn't feel less stressed out in the fall. And I thought our elements exam (Strauss) was pretty damn hard.Bildungsroman wrote:Yeah, although fortunately the quarter system helps ease the 1Ls in to exams. I feel like Levmore's exam is gonna a lot like our Elements exam except far less intuitive. There are some concepts we learned and you're just gonna have to be feeling really smart on Wednesday to do well.

Not really. Maybe in the sense of less doctrine, but there definitely is a right/wrong way of approaching questions, which is not like Elements at all.Mal Reynolds wrote:I feel like Levmore's exam is gonna a lot like our Elements exam except far less intuitive. This is relevant to my interests.kathj06 wrote:Would you recommend Chicago to someone interested in public service/public interest? I currently work for federal gov and want to do the same after law school, and am very impressed w/ Chi's revamped LRAP. It seems as though very few students go into public service/govt right after graduation, relative to some other top schools, so I was wondering about the level of institutional support for non-Biglaw jobs.

I've heard mumblings of the 172 bus that transports students from Regents / adjacent housing to the Law School is being (or has already been) shut down? Is there some sort of alternative available, or is living off-campus much less desirable now?

That was last years concern. UoC and CTA came to an agreement, so the 172 runs/continues to run.rsklnkv515 wrote:I've heard mumblings of the 172 bus that transports students from Regents / adjacent housing to the Law School is being (or has already been) shut down? There's obviously a right/wrong way to approach questions in all exams. You know what I meant, don't be naive.Bildungsroman wrote:Also, there's definitely a right and a wrong way of approaching questions in Elements. Seriously reply: At least for Strauss, there were a lot of points to be had by identifying the relevant doctrines, then going through all the twists and turns (This implicates questions of X, Y, and Z. For X, it depends quite a bit on A and B. If we believe A, then...). That is certainly not how I approached Torts. Levmore has a particular way of thinking, and your analysis should try to reflect that. The class may be like Elements in that there is a lack of BLL, but that doesn't make taking one final like the other.

Let's not be naive, learn a couple concepts and apply them is like every law school exam.

Re: UChi Current Students Taking Questions
I apologize if this has been asked already, but does anyone feel like the quarter system puts them at a disadvantage for SA and other summer jobs? I know classes end in June, which is a month+ later than most other law schools.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
