You all have way more than we did. Only a couple have the same professor.

I'd pick based on exam type, professor reviews, and subject matter. I didn't take my elective seriously and it was my lowest grade 1L year, so don't think you can just fuck around. If you have questions about a specific one you can PM me and I'll let you know if I've heard anything.

Are 1Ls graded on the same curve as 2/3Ls?

Pretty sure everyone in the class is on the same curve. But that can lead to weirdness with the graduation deadline, like last year a professor had to grade a bunch in a night to set the curve before the 1Ls had even taken the exam. Or something.

And you can do papers to get around curves, but then you have to be careful if you're going to try to grade on to law review.

The one that gives you a combination of least work and best grade. No one will care what elective you took or why, all anyone will care about is the grade you got in it and the grades you got in your other courses, which may be higher or lower depending on the amount of time you have to spend worrying about your elective.

Take something that resembles a law class. Meaning don't take the feminism class.

Ignore bils. Take that class if you want, no one cares. I heard 0 stories of employers asking about why you picked a certain elective over another.

Weird 2-part question:
1. Do you drink Hyde Park tap water?
2. Do you find that drinking it makes you more thirsty?

To back up bils, firms aren't going to care about your electives but taking copious amounts of "Law and 13th Century Anglo-Prussian Feminist Instrumental Folk Sonatas" type classes doesn't go over well with judges if you are in a position to apply for clerkships and intend to do so. If you're not in that position (or don't care about clerking), go nuts.

I definitely don't drink the tap water here. At least not straight from the tap. Brita water filter FTW.

In case any 0Ls are reading this exchange, no, there's nothing wrong with Hyde Park's tap water.

Yeah seriously. There's this dude at school named Coase who's been drinking the stuff for almost 50 years and he's still partying like it's 1928 at age 102.

A lot of money

And like...free dinners, I think they give you a faculty mentor, a line on your resume? I'm not sure. I'm not a Ruby, and people don't go parading around the school in "Rubenstein Scholars" t-shirts. If you have one, I'm sure they give you current students' contact information, which seems like the best place to get information about what it's "really like."

1L here. So, the financial aid office has been helpfully ignoring me about when/how we are supposed to renew our Need Access/FAFSA/whatever. Does anyone know? On the website it says they would contact us, but it's starting to feel a bit late.

Thanks!

There's this amazing Rubenstein Scholar's Lounge. It is under the Reflecting Pool, but you access it through a secret tunnel in the basement (just opposite the Law Review office). It is full of couches, theres a full bar, and Epstein and Coase pretty much just hang out there all day in case Rubenstein Scholars want to stop by for a chat. It is paneled in mahogany and there are many leatherbound books.

But seriously, I think Xifeng has it right. UChicago is great at throwing the full weight of its faculty support behind promising students, and as a Rubenstein you'll probably be presumed to be one of those right from the start. That doens't mean a Rubenstein is necessary to get that kind of support though. Basically all the students that do well 1L year will have a ton of support if they are applying for clerkships and whatnot, and even if you aren't one of the top students it is really easy to find members of the faculty who are interested in mentoring.
