This probably isn't too helpful, but just FWIW, in my application year (2011-12, for c/o 2015), this happened:

I tried to withdraw earlier this week, and they responded by offering me a Ruby. Totally unexpected... but too incredible to pass up. So excited to be joining you all in Chicago this September.

This was an applicant who had previously been offered 90k, then got off HLS waitlist, sent Chicago withdrawal email and got a Rubenstein as a reply. Interestingly, I quite similarly also had 90k at Chi, in off HLS waitlist, and sent Chi withdrawal email. I'd have taken a Ruby in a heartbeat, but their response to my email was:
"Dear xxx - Your application has been withdrawn."

Woops. I mean I ended up at HLS and am fine, but just saying this isn't a recommended bargaining tactic, even if it ended up golden for that other applicant.

Hmm, don't know. I will say that my withdrawal email was very short and to the point, like actually one sentence long. No idea of course what curiouscat's withdrawal email was like.

I feel like it's pretty unlikely that email wording could make that dramatic a difference. More likely in my mind that curicouscat was simply a more desirable candidate for them despite our same initial 90k awards - maybe his numbers were more critical for medians at that late summer stage of the game, or something. And besides, for my own sanity's sake I'm just gonna go ahead and not accept the idea that a differently-worded email could have possibly netted me a Ruby and absolutely changed the course of my life.

I don't remember. I think my 1L year they came out within like a week of the time we were given. But who really knows.

Also, props to Levmore if he gets everything in on time. He's grading half an exam for the entire 1L class plus like 100 public choice exams.

Has anyone lived in University-owned housing? The prices seem much more palatable than Regents.

Feel free to PM if you want, but current 2L who has lived in the grad housing the last two years. Price (to live by yourself, at least) is a steal, many of the apartment buildings have heat/electric/water included in rent, and my rent only moved like $8/month between 1L and 2L. I don't think the network effects of Regents are worth the price difference if you're thinking of living by yourself, especially when you can jump on a shuttle at all hours of the night to head to Regents for a meet-up/study group/whatever you want.

Also in university housing. I really like it, it's cheaper than Regents, everything is included in the rent except for electricity & internet. My rent is $733/month, electricity is about $25/month in the winter and was about $40/month over the summer. Parking is $65/month. Whenever I have a problem, I drop a sticky note in my custodian's box in the morning and he has it fixed before I get home that evening. Every single time.

I have my own kitchen, and there is laundry for the building, but not in my room. I think it's $2.50/wash and $2.50/dry.

That having been said, Regents has obvious social benefits to it. I live a few blocks from Regents, and there are several university-owned buildings around me that I know fellow 1L's live in.

I think I'll be moving out next year, but it was a good place to live for 1L

I don't know about University housing, but there are LOTS of places you can find that are cheaper than Regents Park *ahem* Luxury apartments. I went through MAC Properties.

Indeed. I'd also recommend TLC management and McKey and Poague. If you look through some of the previous pages there are breakdowns of the different management companies, by me and others.

I'm more frustrated that they shut down the gym for three months in order to "improve it" and it turns out they just took out the sauna, freeweight room, and dance room while shrinking the locker rooms. All of the equipment is the same--except that half of the dumbbells are now missing.

I get it if you want a larger maintenance area, but don't claim you're doing it for us.

It is still common to get big law at/below median. It will require more hustle, a focus on your interviewing skills, and smart bidding (NY), but the opportunity is there. I can only think of a couple people that wanted big law and didn't get it, and it was not because of grades.

edit: it is hard for employers to figure out who is a a little under/over/at median due to our quirky grades. My experience is they lump people into the following categories: very bad grades (not common), median grades (huge chunk), good grades, great grades.

Is this hypothetical or actual?

From what I've gathered, it would seem like clerkship -> apply for grade-selective+clerkship-required firms (susman, bartlit, etc) or just straight-up apply for "normal" biglaw firms during clerkship would be TCR - over 3L OCI, but do both - but as a 1L the value of my advice is probably minimal.

Has this ever happened before? A 181 GPA is like top 5%ish... Since this isn't 2007 anymore, I imagine that if OCI didn't go well with that sort of a GPA, something is fundamentally wrong.

I'm sure it has. But yea, probably something to do with bidlist/transfer/bad interviewer/etc.
