Any news on what the hiring situation is like at boyd? I've recently visited the admissions office and they gave me statistics indicating that almost everyone gets employed. Does it turn out that way?

I have not yet heard any positive things about employment prospects from 3L's, so take that for what you will. It is conventional wisdom to disregard school provided employment data.

I believe 80% of students, on average, are in-state students. But it doesn't feel like it. Even the people with Nevada residency have not lived here long, almost no one was actually born in Las Vegas.

Thanks for taking questions.

First, I applied to Boyd due to its location in my desired geographical area (UT/NV/AZ) and it seems like a really up and coming program. However, I'm just wondering how you like living in Vegas? Like most everyone, I've only ever visited (for the obvious reasons), but I've heard really mixed reviews about what its actually like to live there.

Second, how is the location of the school within Vegas? I've also been informed there are some pretty shady areas in and around the strip.

Two things I know a lot about!

Area around school:

I think the area around school is fine, people are just pussies. I don't get it at all, people made it sound so bad before I got here, and even some people that live in nicer areas of Vegas cringe at the thought of the UNLV area. I don't know where they grew up or what they are used to, but I think it's absolutely fine, there are cool little places to eat and bars and such. I grew up in an affluent area of New York and the commercial areas where I'm from are no different than here in Vegas, Vegas is no scarier, and I've never had any problems.

As far as other shady areas... I have not explored the whole city, but I've seen a lot of it. There are some areas where if you drive off the strip a few blocks, there are some weird little nooks and crannies that look like really run down areas. I almost never see them unless I'm lost. As far the strip itself, uhhh, I think its fine. I don't walk around the strip, but I've spent hundreds of hours at strip casinos (because I am a bad student), and have never seen anything too crazy. I don't see why you would end up walking around Vegas, it isn't like you can walk from place A to place B easily and as long as you are driving from place to place you shouldn't see any bad stuff going on.

I accidentally walked through a bad area of town when I had to get my car repaired, it was 8 am, I was in some weird backroads and allies with rundown complexes with bars on the windows, but nothing bad happened to me... But that was the only time I was ever worried at all.

How I like Vegas in general:

I absolutely love Las Vegas. I don't love every single thing it has to offer, but if I don't like a certain scene I can avoid it. I like my apartment, it is affordable, housing is generally affordable because the economy sucks. My classmates are awesome, we have lots of fun. I'll put it like this... if you are even just a little bit outgoing, you should like it here. There are really religious people, really outdoorsy people, and they do a lot of sports and golf and camping. I'm more of a degenerate, so I do a lot of drinking and gambling, so if you're into that, there's that.

The heat is not that bad. It was pretty hot tho. I'll trade that for it being nice during winter, and its been mostly 50s and 60s even in December.

I can go on and on about various topics, but I'll just leave it at that for now. If you have more specific questions about living here, let me know.

ALSO: A lot of this really depends on whether you are a girl or a guy. I am a early 20s guy and I've had no problems. Another 1L who is a 20s something female lives down the street and she's had a few problems. I live in what I was told was either the first or second worst area in Vegas. I've seen a naked guy getting out of his car at 4 PM, but that doesn't bother me. Yes, there are shady people constantly walking around my street, but I live in the back, third floor, of a nice complex, so am seperated from it. I've heard people screaming "HELP!". People get arrested sometimes. Other day my friend said she saw someone being wheeled out with a sheet over them like they were dead from another complex on my street. So that shit happens, it isn't all good. But as I said, I live on one of the worst parts of Vegas (supposedly), and I myself haven't had any problems. Crime happens.

Best of luck!

Wow, thanks for the quick response. It helps to have a local's perspective, I can only gather so much from weekend visits (most of which as a little hazy).

I guess that is my major concern; I love Vegas (its like adult Disneyland), but I wondering if the novelty ever wears off after one lives there for an extended period of time?

Only been here for this semester, am not tired of it yet, and I don't expect to get tired of it... I mean, it still has normal stuff to do besides the strip, so its like any other place, but it also has the strip :P.

I am also an applicant to UNLV-Boyd, but I've lived in the city for 7 years or so. I would disagree slightly with the OP. Even though I really appreciate his input, after living here for some time and being in a different age bracket (33), I can tell you that the novelty does wear off. There are several areas of Las Vegas that are communities, just like you would find in any other suburban area. If you want to spend your extra time, and money on the strip, it is an option but I find that as the OP freely admitted, it is most degenerates that you find down there and not people that most upstanding law school students would generally associate with.

I have also worked in the legal field in Las Vegas for several years, and I can speculate that the information that Boyd is distributing about employment is probably accurate, considering that there is such an overabundance of law offices. I have never had a problem finding work as a paralegal, and many of the attorneys in Las Vegas are transient, because they can't handle the negative lifestyle that often occurs with young attorneys with too much money in this town.

I hope that helps with your questions.

Thank you for taking questions! I hope your grades went well too.

I was curious what type of gambling and entertainment/sports law classes or seminars they have down there. I got accepted on Friday. Though I haven't heard from the majority of my cycle, right now, it would be my top choice.

Also, do you remember when the scholarship info came out last year?

Thanks again!

If I remember correctly, UNLV sends an acceptance email followed by a snail mail packet. The packet will contain scholarship information, I think. (FWIW I didn't get accepted at UNLV until 1/29 last year, so there is always the possibility that scholarship information hasn't been decided yet, I wouldn't know).

As far as the other stuff, I have no personal knowledge of sports and gaming law classes, just check the catalog on the school's website.

I grew up in Vegas but left for college after high school. My parents still live in Vegas and have told me they have been hearing whispers about financial issues at UNLV, and specifically the law school. Do you know if there is anything to what they have heard? Is the school pretty secure or could there be issues with keeping it running in the near future?

I'm visiting vegas right now, and students are protesting that unlv is facing a 16% budget cut this year (following similarly sized cut last year and slightly less drastic cuts in the previous years). So yea, keep in mind that the continuous influx of cash that unlv has enjoyed for most of this decade is turning around and flowing the other way now (thanks in no small part to the newly elected republican governor who sees education as another perk offered by the state).

Do you know anyone from the PT program, do they enjoy it? Is there a stigma to it when it comes to finding a job in the area? Do NV (particulalry Vegas) firms show preference to the Boyd graduates?

Really hoping the doubling tuition thing is not true, but as a student at UNR it would not shock me... Our Tuition seems to rise $1,000 every time you check the website.

Hey PhantaManta, I was stalking old UNLV forums and saw something about a recommended reading list that UNLV sent out in mid April (for some reason this makes me really happy) what did it look like? Was it really any help to the people who used it?

I submitted my application at the end of December and I have yet to get a response from UNLV. Has anyone else heard back about their applications? I was reading somewhere online that most people will get replies in April but how does that work when all of my other seat deposits are due, at the latest, on April 15th?

I did not read anything on that list. If I remember correctly, it was more just a list of good books in various genres than a specifically law related thing.

I do not know of anyone who read that much in preparation. We were told to read 'The Happy Lawyer' for orientation or something but I did not. Some people did and said it was boring.

Honestly, most the stuff 0L's obsess about doesn't end up mattering... Orientation is good though, it is good to get to know your classmates and stuff over the first few weeks, and that happens at orientation and social events. So do that stuff.

Honestly, I am not paying that much attention to what's going on. There have been a lot of protests and people seem worried. I heard that UNLV is getting rid of their philosiphy and woman's studies departments to try and save money, so obviously, the school is in poor economic shape. How, exactly, this will affect the law school isn't clear yet. Tuition will almost definitely be raised. If I had to guess, I don't think 30,000 in-state and 40,000 out-of-state is out of the realm of possibility, but that would (I think) the upper limit. This is totally baseless speculation by the way.
