Haha, several of us give him a hard time about it, but yea. I agree. I learned more about how law works, how to argue like a lawyer, and how to be precise from him than from any other professor. The stuff I learned from him I carried over and used in my other classes.

He's also awesome to talk to outside of class.

Matriculation Ceremony - Monday, August 20, 2012
Dean Kent Syverud will be welcoming you to the law profession. This ceremony will be followed by a class photo and reception. Please dress in formal business attire.
Composite Photo – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A Composite Photo is required and we have given you a number of opportunities to have one taken. Please remember to dress in formal business attire FROM THE WAIST UP so that your resulting Composite Photo will be appropriate to hand out to employers. The photos will cut off at mid-torso, so you may wear casual pants and shoes, if you wish.
Unless otherwise noted, students should dress in business casual attire for Orientation.

Anyone mind parsing this email they sent out?

What do we wear for the composite photo? What does "formal business attire from the waist up" mean? I'm picturing a white shirt, tie, and jacket, with swim trunks...

I refuse to wear a shirt and tie with no jacket.

Matriculation Ceremony: Must wear business formal (i.e., suit).

Rest of the week is casual, but on one of the four days you must have a composite picture taken. You get to schedule when you want to do this composite picture. The picture is only from the waist up, so you can wear casual and just bring a suit/shirt/tie to throw over it.

What was that composite photo ever used for?

Ha, it says "so that it will be appropriate to hand out to employers"

I didn't know firms required head shots. Learn something new every day

Maybe they put them in the resume books CSO is always emailing about? Mine was useful, firm needed a professional-looking headshot for a summer directory and I had nada till I remembered that they made us do those.

I think it is used for a variety of things, including class lists for profs, CSO so they know who we are, and maybe even resume books. Not 100% sure.

The class list for profs uses the photos we took for our student IDs.

Orientation Protip: The overflow room is your friend, but it will be closed by Friday, thus skip friday.

I'm looking for 3Ls selling their casebooks (or supplements) for the following classes:

Evidence (Rosen, obv)
Tax (Wiedenbeck)
Legal Profession (Kuehn)
Admin (Levin)

Thanks!

don't skip Friday, the overflow room advice is so you don't get cold called in front of everyone during orientation.

Yeah, you will probably be pretty hungover all week, last thing you want to do is try to talk about some case you didn't read.

The real protip:

Go the first day of orientation.
Skip all other days. If they say something about mandatory attendance, come in and get your nametag for the day, sign in, then bounce.

Do not buy the casebook for evidence with Rosen. Even Rosen says do not buy the casebook for his class. You literally do not open the book.

Veteran move, and TCR IMO. It's all pointless lawl school pageantry, boring intros to legal concepts that you don't need to know, and counterproductive nonsense like teaching you how to brief a case

Thanks so much for telling me that. It's the most expensive book by far and can't be bought used because it's a new edition. And the rules of evidence are available online, so there's nothing else needed for his class, right?

I didn't use the book during the year but used it to study at the end. It is written like a supplement so I found it helpful. Consider buying the old edition?

That's definitely more tolerable, the old edition is like $20. Thanks.
