Re: BU 1Ls & 2Ls Taking Questions
Hey all!
I know that URM cycles tend to be unpredictable, but I was wondering what range of numbers I would need to even have a shot at BU law? There isn't really much information out there so I figured this would be the best place. This is one of my top choice schools and really love the city of Boston.
oh and I'm AA male btw with 3.94 UG gpa. haven't taken the LSAT yet but I won't be applying for several cycles.

Well, AA males often get a good boost, and your GPA is fantastic. I'd say you'd be golden over their 25th (163), but that's just my opinionAj32590 wrote:Hey all!

I'd say even like 160 will probably get you in, honestly.

How many of your classmates can balance school and a meaningful relationship?jas5076 wrote:Aim higher, coming from a current BU student who really does enjoy the school
Do you feel law school is just another time in your life filled with numerous one night stands.
What are the alumni connections like? Like do alumni really pull for BU students to get summer internships at their firms?
Do you have lots of guest speakers? I am ignorant to law school lectures but I would imagine they would get very old, do some professors bring in real attorneys to tell battle stories?
Do they teach you a lot about mass torts?
Do you ever have any rebel conservative professors that you have to realign your opinion to please her or him( I have discovered as an econ undergrad to cater my work to my professors political preferences to boost my grade....) or.. are you free to blast you liberal rants throughout your work?
Do they break people who are shy in front of an audience?

1. I know quite a few people in long-term relationships. Its all about finding a person who can put up with the experience you are going through in law school. If your significant other is someone who constantly demands attention and can't go a week without seeing you, then that relationship will not survive law school. I find that the majority of people in relationships have been in them for quite awhile, and are at a stage where they can survive being apart for awhile. I am in one myself, and have zero problem maintaining it.
2. People in law school certainly have fun at times, but there is too much work and responsibility to fill your time with parties and one-night stands. What you describe sounds like an undergraduate environment, which is far removed from the typical law school environment in most cases.
3. The alumni I talk to are really great. They are happy to talk to you about their experiences at school and in their careers. Many seem to really love chatting with current students. And yes, you can certainly make some great connections amongst alumni to assist you in your job search. But it is all about being proactive. The alumni won't come find you. As long as you get your face out there, the alumni network can be supremely helpful.
4. We have a bunch of speakers who come visit. Some are professors from other schools, exerts in certain areas of the law, some practicing attorneys, some politicians, etc. You get a great mix (and food is almost always provided which is pretty awesome)
5. I can't say we learned all that much about mass torts but its certainly something that came up both in torts as well as civil procedure (while discussing the procedure of class actions). Perhaps there is an upper-level course for students interested in this area, but I am not sure
6. Political ideology does not at all factor into the classroom experience, nor should it. The professors keep their political beliefs to themselves, as they would be completely unwelcome. Just as your liberal rants would be equally unwelcome (though I would venture a guess that a majority of students in a liberal city such as Boston would likely agree with your views).
7. I wouldn't say they "break" people who are shy in front of audiences. They are certainly fair, though there is an expectation that you become comfortable speaking in front of the class relatively quickly. No professor will hold anything against you if you give it your best shot but come up short. The only time they would become angry is if you are clearly unprepared. Some professors are rougher on students in class than others, but the idea is to develop the skill of speaking before the class. It isn't to diminish people's confidence or "break" them down.

I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with this, I am in a serious relationship, my best friends in my section are in relationships, quite frankly....sectioncest is rampant here, perhaps they need to work us harder or something and put a stop to it?
Do you feel law school is just another time in your life filled with numerous one night stands.
Me, no. Some of my friends, yes. And I'm pretty much outed on here anyway, so friends, you know who you are.
What are the alumni connections like? Like do alumni really pull for BU students to get summer internships at their firms?
That is a complicated question. The problem is partners at large firms really could give a damn, minus a small minority. The people we have frequent contact with, mostly associates, haven't the pull to influence hiring decisions if they tried. That said, I think the situation here is about as good as it can get.
Do you have lots of guest speakers? I am ignorant to law school lectures but I would imagine they would get very old, do some professors bring in real attorneys to tell battle stories?
No, in class never. However, there are guest speakers at the law school every single day, and I mean every day. They call them brown bag lunches, free food and someone talking to you about Space Law or the Civil Rights Wing of the AG, etc.
Do they teach you a lot about mass torts?
Do you mean MA, Torts? (No) Mass Torts as in, products liability or something of that nature, it varies based on instructor for 1L courses.
Do you ever have any rebel conservative professors that you have to realign your opinion to please her or him( I have discovered as an econ undergrad to cater my work to my professors political preferences to boost my grade....) or.. are you free to blast you liberal rants throughout your work?
Haha, is this what you think law school is? There is no opinion here, there is only the BLL with the notable exception of Prof. Simon's theories on single-versus dual intent.

I can answer prof. questions if you have any. Horror stories as in Maclin is an extremely demanding (some say terrifying), Socratic method teacher. On the flip-side, most people by the end absolutely love him because he really tries to get people to work on public speaking/thinking on your feet. Those who had him typically rock 1L moot court.

Re: BU 1Ls & 2Ls Taking Questions
BU has a pretty solid mix of professorial strategies and doesn't seem to favor one over the other. There is a decent percentage, roughly 1/3 who stick to the classic Socratic method with varying degrees of difficulty. A small percentage, maybe 1/10 or so seem to be lecturers, they are rare, but they do exist. Most professors use a hybrid method, nearly all incorporating some form of the traditional "on call." A growing number of Socratic method professor's are starting to use a panel method or something similar to it, where you are notified on which date you will be on call.

Re: BU 1Ls & 2Ls Taking Questions
Thanks guys - I don't know that I have specific questions right now, but nice to hear some generalities about professor teaching styles! I'm actually a huge fan of socratic method profs usually, although I've never heard of the panel approach, but it seems like a nice compromise.
Cupidity, will PM you if any specific questions come up. I am interested in the Health Law concentration at BU, so would be most interested in profs that teach those courses, since I assume its mostly a crapshoot when it comes to getting 1L section assignments?

Re: BU 1Ls & 2Ls Taking Questions
Just got in today by email (I'm abroad). Hooray!
The e-version of the admit packet came with a terrific letter on the history of BU from a Professor Seipp. Very witty and interesting.
Next question..do you know any people who have received named schollies? I'm still reading up on them, but I was wondering if they have strings.

Re: BU 1Ls & 2Ls Taking Questions
No one that I know has stipulations on their scholarships. I think the school realizes that school itself is stressful enough. No need to add another reason to worry. Also confirms that they don't just give out such good scholarships with the intention of taking them back (as certain schools do via section-stacking, which BU would have no incentive to do since they don't take away scholarships).Eugenie Danglars wrote:Just got in today by email (I'm abroad). How many of your classmates can balance school and a meaningful relationship?
I moved to Boston with my long term boyfriend, we are both at BU and both in the same section. I suppose I'm in an odd situation where, if anything, law school has strengthened our relationship by being each other's support system. There are plenty of people I know however who are married/engaged/in a relationship and one semester in are still fine.
Do you feel law school is just another time in your life filled with numerous one night stands.
Don't have any input on this one.
What are the alumni connections like? Like do alumni really pull for BU students to get summer internships at their firms?
I'm just putting out applications for summer internships now but the alumni I've met with that have made visits to BU have been very open to communication and helpful in general. I'll hopefully have more input on this in a few months.
Do you have lots of guest speakers? I am ignorant to law school lectures but I would imagine they would get very old, do some professors bring in real attorneys to tell battle stories?
There are no guest speakers in class, although as someone mentioned above, we have guest speakers come to the tower just about every day. In my experience thus far, professors don't lecture enough for it to get "old" - maybe I've just gotten super lucky with professors, but I've found class to be very engaging and more about classmate participation than anything just the professor rambling on. (The readings, though, I can't say the same about!)
Do they teach you a lot about mass torts?
This would depend entirely on what professor you have, although in 1L Torts there's so much subject material to cover that I couldn't imagine a professor spending a significant amount of time dedicated to one such thing.
Do you ever have any rebel conservative professors that you have to realign your opinion to please her or him( I have discovered as an econ undergrad to cater my work to my professors political preferences to boost my grade....) or.. are you free to blast you liberal rants throughout your work?
You'll learn very quickly that your political opinions mean little, if anything, in legal classroom discussion. And it definitely means NOTHING when it comes down to exams.
You'll quickly begin to hate the person who feels the need to raise their hand and share their political opinions on every legal issue. Don't be that person.
Do they break people who are shy in front of an audience?
I'm very shy. I was very nervous about the Sorcratic method. My professors made it (relatively) painless. When people are on call and admit they don't know an answer or are clearly nervous, professors will either guide them to the right spot in the case or ask the class for help.
I really can't say enough about how great the professors are here.
Next question..do you know any people who have received named schollies?
I have a full-tuition Dean's Scholarship. Zero stipulations on it. In fact, I'm even looking into taking a year off to do some volunteer work abroad and my scholarship would be re-instated, no questions asked, when I came back.

Sorry if this is out of line, but you have great numbers and got into some fantastic schools with money; what ultimately made you decide on BU? If it's something personal I understand, only curious.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have. I believe that the law school decision process really is specific to each person, but I'd be more than happy to go through my reasons.spacepenguin wrote:Sorry if this is out of line, but you have great numbers and got into some fantastic schools with money; what ultimately made you decide on BU? For me it really came down to financial freedom and the particular location/feel of the school.
At the start of the application process I wasn't positive that I really wanted to go to law school. I was considering many different graduate programs and potential career paths right up until my deposit was due. Going into law school, I placed a very high value on being able to change my mind and leave literally any day I wanted without worrying about a cent of debt. I had the mindset of "get into the best school on a full ride" from the beginning.
As far as BU particularly, I knew I wanted to be in a city where I didn't need a car. Boston's not too far away from home, I have family in the area, and I would be very happy settling down here. When I walked on BU's campus, it just felt right and I could picture myself being there. I loved how everything I could possibly need was within walking distance from the tower or just a short T ride away.
I also really liked the course selection, dual degree options, and willingness of the faculty to incorporate non-law classes into my curriculum. BU had a handful of courses that were unique to the school and seemed very on par with my particular legal interests.
I will admit that on the day deposits were due, I panicked and asked the T14s that gave me money for extensions. I still picked BU in the end even with the extra decision time. At that point my boyfriend was committed to being in Boston and I'm sure that had a tiny bit to do with the final decision.
As you can see, my thought process about law school in general is very different from most of TLS. I was blasted here for making the absolute wrong choice with absolute terrible reasoning. I can say with confidence that as of one semester in though, I am 100% sure I made the right choice. I love the school, I've maintained my undergrad grades, and most importantly I'm very happy here.
While that's mostly just my own personal decision/reasons, I'd be glad to talk about anything BU-specific. If you'd prefer ask any questions via PM, please feel free.
