UK is a great school if you want to practice in the state of Kentucky and can pull decent grades.

The law school has a 2.8 curve, however the students didn't seem terribly competitive when I visited. Everyone seemed friendly and willing to help each other out.

I have to say, the law building looks a little outdated. I was told they are anticipating a new building soon and that it was currently forth on the capital projects list. However, when I viewed the list from the board of trustees (which only listed to top four) the law building was nowhere to be seen. That being said, we would definitely not be seeing the new building's completion. For what it's worth, the rest of the campus is very nice.

Lexington is a great city. Not too big, not too small (around 220K). The cost of living is low, which is good for someone taking on debt for law school. There are a decent amount of legal opportunities in the area, but they are mainly small to medium sized firms. Louisville and Cinncinnatti, which have a bit larger of a market, are close, but they really aren't "biglaw" markets either. Most of the larger firms in the area will pay 80-85K (decreasing as you go to smaller firms), which is quite a bit of money considering the cost of living.

One HUGE plus for UK is that the school is really the best in the area. The only other KY law schools are Northern Kentucky (Chase) and U. of Louisville which are T4 and T3 respectively. That translates into UK grads being placed in very high regard within the region. So yea, UK is no HYS, but if you are looking to practice in the area it is a great choice.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I'm from Frankfort, so I know a lot about UK. Lexington is a good size town with lost of apartments that are reasonable. Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky aren't that far away and they have a nice market for law. UK has a reputation for having a good law school and is the best in KY. Be cafeful though because some students care more about basketball than school.

Applied in late December. When do you think I should hear from UK?

I applied around Thanksgiving and haven't heard anything except that my application is complete. It is one of my safeties so I'm not too worried though.

Lantern,

In addition, what did your status checker say upon acceptance?

I haven't been checking the status checker, but it now says "Decision Rendered" and it says that status was posted 1/11. I received an email about three hours ago offering me admission, but it also says a packet is on the way. It also says a scholarship board will meet at the end of the month and begin offering scholarships to certain people. I'll let you know anything else interesting once I get the packet in the mail.

Great, thanks for the help. And again, congrats on the acceptance.

I see you are from Ohio. Good sign for me being from New York!

Does anyone have anymore fidelity on just when the new building will be completed? I'm interested in working in the Lexington, have family in the Bluegrass, and prefer a smaller, somewhat urban school. But a school's facilities absolutely would affect the learning environment and it makes a difference to me to learn in a nice setting--rather than a drab, outdated building. So UK's a contender, but so is UC, Louisville, and perhaps Vandy as a reach school. If UK were just a bit nicer--or about to be, it'd make the application process a lot less work-intensive  .
