We know what it means. It just doesn't make sense.

An understandable mistake. But it is actually a pretty good school.

Trust me.. real school. I went there. HELL ON EARTH. Academic bubble where all general education(Art History 110, Theatre 100,etc.) classes are taught as if everyone in the class is planning on a PhD in the topic and the biggest attractions in town are Wal-Mart and Dairy Castle.

Employers don't read the LR rankings.

Looks like I'm a little late in the conversation. If you know you want to do IP and you are fine with staying in NE Ohio, Akron is a fine option. Tuition is ridiculously cheap, so you won't run up much debt.

Going back to the scholarship thing for a minute, is it normal for schools to take them away after the first semester? I thought the schollies should be good for at least a year at most schools.

Depends what schools. Most higher-ranked schools will guarantee your scholarship right off the bat for all 3 years as long as you don't fail. Many other schools, most of them T2 or lower will impose GPA or class rank conditions on some or all of their scholarships. These can be pretty easy or very onerous (think top 1/3). Also, anecdotal evidence indicates that occasionally, schools will give out more scholarships than there are people who can keep them (example: giving out scholarships with top 1/3 conditions to 1/2 of the class).

Basically, just be careful.

What do you guys think is the "average" law school GPA of a 1L at the end of the first semester?

End of the year?

This is probably going to make her say, "I'll have no problem getting above median now! I got all A's and B's in college!"

Asking for all law schools in general...2.3 - 2.8?

Varies very wildly. I believe most of the top law schools curve to something in the 3s, like a 3.0 or 3.3.

I've considered going to Akron Law school, but honestly the biggest praise I've heard regarding the school is its afforadablity. Sure that's great. But the fact that there is a great risk of the scholarships being snatched after less than one year is ridiculous. After the savings benefit is gone, what's left?

I figure I have a very good chance of getting accepted into the Ohio State University, and while it will be more expensive, I think the benefits outweigh the expense. It's not about being pretentious, but realistic. If you want to stay in Ohio and are confident you can keep up the grades for the scholarship, then I'd say go to Akron. Ohio lawyers make less than the national average, so get the education cheap where you can.

I personally would like to find a relatively cheap school with a good record of grads willing and able to get jobs out of state. OSU has a wide network of successful people all across the country. In major cities you're going to be competing with other top law schools in the immediate area. And, sorry but compared to Akron, the OSU campus and city of Columbus is pretty awesome.

This is kind of one of the points being made here - the median GPA for each law school can vary widely so GPA requirements that seem similar may not be similar at all. Since I applied to both Akron and Case I can give examples for those - Akron required a 3.3 GPA to keep 100% of scholarship amount, which was determined to be approximately top 10% of the class and the OP stated Akron's median GPA was 2.6.

Case requires a 3.1 to retain scholarships and that is approximately the top 45% of the class so median would be like a 3.0?

And THAT is why a 3.1 GPA req at one school is waaaay different from a 3.3 GPA req at another school. They sound pretty similar, but when the curve is taken into account you can see that they are very different.

The important thing in this thread is the OP, which showed us that Akron's scholarships are mostly a one-and-done, even with a lot of A/A- grades. The OP was quite informative, actually. Nasty, nasty scholarship requirement with that curve.

About John Carroll, from someone who grew up nearby. There are a surprising number of small colleges in Ohio that do only BA/AB and MA degrees. I am not sure why they proliferated here, but they're numerous, and those are the so-called Master's Colleges...I guess. For what it's worth (very little), JCU is well thought-of in the Greater Cleveland area and a lot of the private religious schools feed into it. Would it help you get into Akron? Sure. Might help with Case, Marshall, Akron, etc. but it's a tiny, tiny, little factor, just something you mention like, 'Oh, I grew up around here.' Well, that's nice.
