Yale 1L

Postby learnedhand111 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 5:08 pm

Hi,
I posted something like this on another page but now I'm beginning to think that was improper. In any event, I am a 1L at Yale who would be happy to answer questions if anyone has them. I used TLS during my admissions process (I never posted, but I surfed quite a bit) and it was quite useful, so now it's time to give back!

Oooooo...

What's a typical day like?

Why did you choose yale?

Do you love it there? What is your favorite thing about Yale?

Would you call it "diverse"?

Is everyone academia focused?

What is the COL?

Do you put on your pants one leg at a time like the rest of us, or do Yale students have some magical other way of doing it?

How did you get accepted, other than great numbers and general brilliance?

Where will you be working this summer?

Favorite professor so far?

How cut-throat are YLS students generally?

How hot are the nerd-bitches?

I don't have much time right now, but let me take a stab at a few of these pretty awesome questions:

I am working at the ACLU.

My favorite professor...that is a hard one. I have had a lot of great ones. I really liked Amar for Con Law. Generally speaking, you're going to be well off whoever you get for Con Law here. Also, I hear Heather Gerken, who is incredible, is teaching a small group next year.

Yale students aren't cut throat at all. No one believes that's true until they come here -- but it's true.

Nerd bitches are okay.

I have no idea how I got accepted. Luck, I guess.

More later...

I do love it here. It's an intellectually stimulating, fun, close-knit community of students--and of professors. All of my professors from this semester and last semester know my name. I'm already researching for one of them.

I would say about 1/5 people plan on academia. It isn't nearly as big a crowd as you'd think.

Of the 1/5 planning on academia, do most of them come in with prior degrees (esp. PhDs)? What are their realistic job prospects, either with or without the PhD? Finally, do you have any sense of how much something like a PhD might factor into admissions decisions?

some do, some don't. there definitely are a lot of people with advanced degrees, but you still can be a law prof without one (if you want to teach black letter). to be honest, i don't really know what the job market is like for law teachers. i'm not planning on entering that field.
