Top Law Schools

Looking for some truthful information regarding Maine Law. Appreciate any help.

What are the job prospects like? Do many local firms hold interviews, or is there not enough to go around?

Any idea what the average starting salary is? I've found a lot of conflicting information online.

From Maine, currently @ Cornell. Would have gone to Maine, but wanted more of a chance @ Boston. Top Maine firms start at 80K or so but seem to offer a good work/life balance (Portland is a great little city). Maine firms do hire many Maine grads (though they are not exceptionally large firms), and to some extent they seem to prefer them. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Good luck.

Not sure if you want admissions specs, but the school tends to be splitter friendly and looks at softs fairly well. Unlikely to take LSATs below 150 no matter GPA however. This is the general impression I get.

Yeah, school was very splitter friendly. Boyfriend got in with a 167/2.4. (They view it as a 165, I suppose, because his first score was a 163 and they average.)

Anyone else have any comments on salaries, quality of life, etc.?

I really liked the school but I read somewhere ~60inches of snow... Is that true?? I am from Southern CA so EEK! If you can handle that though, it seems like a great place to be.

Bump. I'd like to get some info from current/former Maine students.

I am from Maine originally, but I am not a student there. Take my info for what its worth.

First of all, the state of Maine is not for everyone. The quality of life is awesome, if you like a slow, friendly, and outdoorsy way of life.

Secondly, Maine is poor. You will not make a lot of money to start, but things are pretty cheap overall, so you will relatively wealthy making 80K. But, beware that only the of the class will make at graduation. There are not many law firms in the state.

Thirdly, Portland is a really cool city, especially for its size. There is a lot to do, more than you would think at first.

The facilities are widely known to be awful at Maine Law. USM has been in decline for years and the budgets are really tight. Additionally, you will dig yourself out of snow in the winter, and it will be cold. If you don't like unpredictable, cold weather, this is not the place for you. Also, I would neglectful if I didn't mention that Maine is somewhat unfriendly to people "from away." This means that most of your classmates will probably be from Maine, want to work in Maine, and the firms in Maine will want to hire people from the state law school before looking to other schools. If you like being a part of a small, friendly community with arts, restaurants, access to the outdoors, and a much more reasonable live-work situation than a big city this may be the place for you. On the other hand, you are probably not going to get rich there.
