I'm also at UTK now. Everything seems great, although there's certainly no shortage of work. Let me know if any of you have any questions about this great, inexpensive school.

How long does it take to establish residency in TN? Definitely interested in UTK.

I think it is pretty difficult to get in-state tuition in Tennessee unless (1) you are already a resident of Tennessee at the time of application; or (2) you are married and your spouse gets a job (ANY job) in Tennessee.

Bumping this. I'm interested in how the first year has been going for all the new 1ls at UTK. Still happy with your decision? Any advice?

I don't think anyone's happy with their choice at finals, but I do really like it here. I live in a nice, peaceful part of town, and everyone is nice and helpful towards each other. From what I've heard, it's not the general law school experience.

How's the parking situation there? Is there separate parking for law students? Bus system? Is there off campus housing options close to campus for grad students that's quiet?

Parking sucks. I was given $64 worth of tickets in the first couple of weeks, and some of my classmates have been booted once or twice for parking in the wrong lot. I would suggest riding the bus or a bicycle, or living close to campus and walking. I usually park in a daytime-safe neighborhood behind campus and walk to the law school, but it's sketchy at night and the hills can be brutal. There are buses that connect the different parts of Knoxville fairly well, but if you live near campus, it's easier just to walk or ride a bicycle.

Most of my friends live outside of the campus area, because Knoxville's not a terribly large city, but there is certainly adequate housing within a couple of miles of the school. Most of my friends are married, though, so I may be a bad example.

I'm in and whenever Admitted Students Day is I'm positive I'll attend to check out the school.

Is there even a Admitted Students Day? It doesn't look like it on the website. Either way, I'm visiting probably later this month or next month.

Parking is still horrible the facilities are really really nice and it's very well respected in the state.

What is your normal schedule like? How much do you study? What are your classmates like?

I'm a 3L at UT, and I have been very satisfied with my experience here. Apart from the typical law school gripes (e.g., "my professor must be out to get me", "I spend all day studying", "I'm never going to get my ideal job in this economy", etc.), most of my friends have few, if any, complaints about their experience here. The faculty is excellent and very knowledgeable, the clinical programs are great, and the environment is laid back and collegial. Hell, even the gunners have friends here. You won't have to spend a fortune on attendance, and you won't feel like you can't come out on Thursday nights or during football season, because you'll know that everyone else is there with you. At the same time, the classes are intellectually stimulating, and you will learn information that you can apply once you're in practice (we hear stories from lawyers that UT grads already know the law or the transactional landscape once they're hired, while graduates of another certain law school in the state are struggling to keep up). Our employment numbers have been great, and you don't have to worry about being pigeonholed in Knoxville for the rest of your life.

Come visit us if you can. We'd love to have you.

i know this is not the forum for this kind of question, but would I have a shot at admittance with a 154 LSAT and a BA in economics with a 4.0 GPA and a BA in English with a 3.9 GPA?

I would say almost definitely know, but there is a teeny teeny chance.

For those of you that already go to UT, do you know anything about the graduate assistant program or know anyone that does it? Their application had a small paragraph about it but I can't find any more info ...

I'll be in the entering class of 2012 if I get in (waiting on my Feb LSAT score right now). I live about 45 min from knox and I'm really wanting to stay close to home, but my professors are really pushing me to some higher ranked schools (Emory, Vandy, etc). What do y'all think? Worth it to stay nearby or should I try for the higher ranked schools?

Go to the highest ranked school that you can. Shoot for Vandy or even higher.

I'm already into higher ranked schools with $, but liked Tennessee more than any other school when I toured, am a lifelong Vols fan for no reason, and would love to work in Knoxville, Chattanooga, or Nashville after school. I applied in October, but still haven't heard back yet. Am I SOL on acceptance / $, or is there still a chance.
