artful_dodger no prob! There is a broad range of professors teaching the day sections. You won't know which section you will be in till August, but I can tell you more details then. I will be continuing my RA position into the school term and will be conducting review sessions for one of the torts sections, so maybe you'll be there!

And in terms of "knowing" what your prof. wants - this is even more important in law school. You have to leach out of them what and how they want things on the exam. Very very very important.

In terms of books, I'm not sure how much cheaper online is.. and different professors sometimes use different books, and that stuff won't be posted until August. If you have the prof. I am working for, I know the books you will need but, I wouldn't hazard 500+ dollars until you know who your professors are.

Artful_Dodger: Perkins loans in August? During orientation? I was under the impression we had to apply for it in July in order to get it on time. Very confused. :?

As for books, I'm just going to get mine at the bookstore. Apparently they're going to pay for mine through my scholarship offer, but I have no idea how that even works yet.

If it helps, I have a just graduated law student friend who gave me a ton of study aids (emmanuals, gilberts, etc.). I'll obviously bring them with when I move, and we can swap them off if need be. Same for the outlines the former McGeorge student gave me. I'm thinking they might help in case we get stuck on something and need another point of reference. Anything to keep the cost down. :)

aldicarb: Thanks for talking to me on AIM last night. It was nice to "meet" someone who's already gone through the 1L process. You'll have to teach me the ways of bugging professors about RA jobs for next summer (esp. Dajani. . .my McGeorge celebrity professor idol of the moment).

Sejal: Same to you re: talking on AIM. It seems that, based on this board, we're going to have some pretty cool classmates (at least you all seem nice right now. . . :P)
==
And now my semi-dislocated knee and I are going to bed. One of these days I'll stop acting like a reckless 12 year old on the ice. . .hopefully this happens before I tear, stretch, or break something connected with my body.

Matokah there should have been a slip in the folder you were mailed when McGeorge first admitted you, on this slip of paper it says free books, it says your supposed to bring it with you on reg day and present it at the bookstore, at least thats how I found out about mine.

Also met a girl who goes to UC Davis Law who had one of our possible 1L prof last year (he was a guest teacher there) she is going to email me tests and notes and outlines, which, I needed I will of course share with all the TLN folks.

-and let me see if I can get this straight not only will my mac not support the software, but if I was to bite the bullet and purchase a new pc laptop then it wil not work as well due to vista? Guess McGeorge is to motivated to produce lawyers that practice in the tech. sectors of law Ha ha ha.

Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!

Matokah, my letter that says my books are free says to show the letter to the book store when I go.

Jarrett, where did you hear we can't use Vista?

Thanks, Jarrett and Ipsa! I'll have to go dig my letter out so I can get those free books! :)

I, too, heard that we can't use Vista. It's either on the admitted students website or on the info for admitted students booklet we got with admission.

I purchased a Lenovo T60 that had the option to choose either Vista or XP, so that's how I managed mine. I'm sort of relieved as I've never used Vista before and wouldn't know where to start with it.

In the stuff I got sent it didn't say anything about not being able to use Vista and if you check the website it says that the software is Vista compatible. I hope that's true since the brand new laptop that was bought for me has Vista.

All of last year, Examsoft was incompatible with Vista at McGeorge. It may be compatible with it this school year, but that depends on whether the school approves it. You may want to contact IT.

Well, if it doesn't work with Vista, then I guess I'll be handwriting because that's what my laptop has got.

I don't remember getting any info in the materials sent to me that said Vista was not compatible (said only that Macs were not compatible). Guess that would have been good to know if that is the case. :?

Maybe I overlooked it, but if there wasn't anything there, I have a feeling a lot of 1Ls are going to be handwriting!

Matokah, I got a T60 too. I really like it :)

Ipsa and Oregongirl: I looked over my stuff again, and you're right! It didn't say Vista wasn't compatible. My admitted students booklet, however, just said to get a laptop with windows XP on it, so I took that as my indication that Vista wasn't compatible. Maybe I was reading between the lines too much, though.

I'm sure admin will be forced to accept Vista because all the new laptops pretty much have it standard nowadays. Don't give up! Fight for your right to be a laptopper. lol But seriously, typing is sooo much better than writing.

On another note, McGeorge class rank letters arrived, yeep! :o

There is never any of these issues with macs, frackin microsoft. I bought the mac because of all the problems my friends were having upgrading to vista.

Then again, the refusal to let us use macs creates an issue so I guess we are all screwed.

By the way Transformers is a Fantastic movie.

t-minus 9 days and counting until i set off for california! is anyone else starting to get excited about starting? i know it'll be a lot of work and pressure, but still, i can't help but get excited.

i'm having my belongings shipped via ABF and have been advised by several friends who've moved cross country that it's much better than u-hauling it. i will be renting a u-haul once i get to sacramento and find a place if anyone wants to go in on one too.

i'll need a couch when i get there too, anybody know of good thrift stores to hit up? i'm gonna be living pretty lean until those student loans come in, so i'll probably end up goodwill-ing it.

if anyone wants to get together before orientation or the pre-orientation get together, mcboyfriend will be leaving me and the cat on the 29th and i'll officially be friend-less in california. that makes me sound so pathetic.

so, vista is good or vista is bad? i haven't purchased my laptop and lord knows i'm not that smart when it comes to computers, so i'll need some direction there.

how many people will be in the class of '10? (isn't that weird that we'll be graduating in 2010?!?!)

i frakkin loved the transformers movie. HIGHLY recommended. i may not purchase one of the classic toys on ebay, but i'm seriously considering buying one of the new ones at target!!

hazleton, indiana

ps does anyone else think it's a good idea to know each other's real names rather than screen name? i'd hate to be in public referring to you guys as "ipsa" or "oregongirl" and look like a tool.

hey

Hey guys, back again (was away for a while with TOO much work). Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions about places to live. ( I found an awesome place and will be moving on the 1st :).

JarrettN I want to get in on this tequila tasting club : )

aldicarb did you take advantage of the tutoring and other programs offered by McGeorge? If so, was it helpful?

I would love to meet up with everyone too, sounds like around the 5th?

Yeah working on a meet and greet around the 5th of august everyone seems to be cool with that date. I'l put some more details out as the moment draws near.

So transformers was good, thundercats is in production, its only a matter of time before there is a gobots movie, all I need now is a battle star galactaca movie to come out.

Adupe you should come before the 25th they are having a special tasting that night. For 25 bucks you get a tasting of espolon ultra. Only 50 bottles were released in the US at 1,800 dollars a bottle. (thats bar cost retail is prob. 25% markup) It goes for 400 a shot. I know completely its ridiculous but for 25 bucks Ill give it a go.

the battlestar galactica movie is coming out this fall!!! it'll be a tv movie based on the pegasus and events before the attack...

yay! i thought i might be the only BSG fan coming in this year!

i'm with the group for the tequila tastings. i won't be there by the 25th though... :( i'll just have to catch it some other time.

they're still going to continue the galactica storyline too right? I think I remember them renewing for another season. They better, or at least insert boomer into the next saga;)

There are a couple of undercover BSG nerds that come into the bar I work at as well as my boss. so on any given evening you'll hear one of us yell out Starbucks a frackin psilon and see who looks up in recognition.

And don't worry the leader of the tasting clb is a fanatic so there will be plenty of tastings, the question is will we have enough time. If worse comes to worse I can always organize a private tasting for us law school people for a small price (like 10-20) per person, usually gets you 5 tastings of really good stuff.

stellenboschmaties, On the question of Vista good or bad? I am neutral. There are things that I really like about it (e.g. there's this way you can kind of make the windows hover in space and page through them to get to the window you want, which is awesome because I always have a million windows open). There are things that make me nuts about it like certain videos won't play using it, whereas they work when I use the desktop computer with XP. If you get Vista, make sure you get at least 1 GB of RAM (2 better!).

I don't know what date I will be moving yet, but I will also need to rent a truck (probably go with Budget since I have rented from them before without a problem).

Also, yeah, real names are nice. Mine is Andrea :)

JarrettN, what's all this about tequila tasting? If only I liked tequila! Now if it were a Scotch whisky tasting...

Yay for other BSG fans! I didn't know it was being made into a movie. Great! I am probably not going to have cable :-/ but I think they put it on iTunes for people to buy and watch on computers.

Nothing really new to add, but I wanted to say I got an email about the rafting trip today. Please make the meet-up on the 5th fairly early in the evening, alright? I have to meet up with the McGeorgers at 6:30a.m. and I am NOT a morning person.

My real name is Amber, and I'm from Minneapolis, MN, as you can tell from my previous posts. Give it up for the Midwesterners! I still think I'm likely to call Andrea by Ipsa since I do it with my boyfriend right now when I refer to her. And same for aldicarb. D'oh! :P

No prob Matokah we'll take all that stuff into account. You'll have a lot of the fun on the rafting trip it will be worth it. The middle fork of the american is cool. Course your supposed to do the first half whilst drinking beer, but nonetheless there are some rapids and stuff gets pretty exciting.

I'm never any good with screen names so my real name is Jarrett. I'm from texas/louisiana but have lived in ca for over a decade now, nice to meet everyone.

Have you guys realized how much we're going to have to study for the bar after we graduate. I know a few that graduated last year they pretty much haven't seen the light of day. On the bright side they have all said law school was fun.

Hello all. You know, I was wait listed by McGeorge some months ago but have been following your posts. You all seem like such a fun bunch of people.

Long story short though, I sent the admissions office some letters and even a postcard while I was in Australia. But then I saw a few people here get admitted off the wait list and had pretty much given up hope (I mean how many people can they admit off a wait list, right?) but then just earlier today I got an email asking if I was still interested because they were going to make final decisions soon.

Not quite an admissions offer, but a glimmer of hope nonetheless. I don't want to get my hopes up, but it was enough to make me register for this site to talk to you friendly people.

Vista or XP?! What's the deal. I think I might end up biting off of Matokah and buying a T60 Lenovo since its pretty affordable and comes with XP. But then the Microsoft guys told me that they're hoping to fully phase out XP by January 2008 and stop offering support systems and updates for it. Which I don't know how good or bad that is, but it makes me twitch a little bit.

The IT guys at McGeorge that I've spoken to say that Vista isn't 100% compatible with ExamSoft and also they're free anti-virus software doesn't work AT ALL with Vista. I don't know when this will be changing or if it will be changing, but I'd like to know before I buy computer with XP and not be able to have support for it OR get a computer with Vista and have it not work! :P
Technology is a six headed monster at its best.

Does anyone on here use AIM? If you do my sn is JenloveLee... stop on by anytime and I may be online!

We might as well all list our aim screen names here. I know a few of you already have been im back and forth but if you could please reprint your names for everyone else. That is if you don't mind people from the site having your im address.

Mine is Hour212, I haven't used aim in a while but now that I'll be back in school that will change anyway. feel free to say hi anytime.

Oh yeah if anyone is going to be setting up a wireless network in their place I have an extra apple airport express (sealed in box) for sale. Due to the stupidty and dishonesty of some ebay sellers :( I bought one through auction over a month ago, and the seller never contacted me after I sent payment. Finally last week I broke down and bought one from apple. Of course, three days later and over a month past due the other came in the mail.

It works with apple or pc and is one of the best network stations around. Also it has an audio/out jack that plugs into the back of an aux/in jack on home stereos so you can play music from itunes wirelessly to your home stereo. Its cool you can be in the bedroom with your laptop and start playing music in the living room. Anyway retail is 99.99 I am selling it for a lot less if anyone needs one just let me know, as I have no use for two.

Apple Airports... hehe nice! I had one too and was told MACs aren't really to reliable when using ExamSoft. However, I have no experience in that area so I wouldn't know. I just gave mine to my younger sister and am off to buy a new laptop...

darn those e-bay people and their non communication skills! Anyhow, I checking around. The IT guys at my work told me some new laptop models just offer vista because its new, but they would load up XP for me after I bought it if the model isn't too super charged and flying at the speed of light. How nice of them :)! Plus, if McGeorge does end up moving to Vista, then I'll still have the Vista software to install later on. Fun :S

My screenname is WhisperSung on AIM. Hit me up when I appear (which is rarely because I'm constantly exhausted).

exception311: GOOD LUCK with the waitlist! Keep bugging the crap out of them and letting them know you'll come if accepted (if it's true, of course ;)). We'd love to add another poster to our happy group. It's so neat that so many of us are using TLS to meet future classmates. Yes, I'm a nerd.

So. . .For six 45 minute sessions of ice each week, I'm forking over $72. This is ridiculous, and I have no money, so it's also not financially smart of me to be doing. BUT the girl I'm babysitting skates 5 hours a day, so I don't just want to sit around and do nothing. So, I've come up with a solution! I'm selling old skating dresses that no longer fit me. I just sold 3 to the girl I babysit for for a total of $45. That's over half a week of ice right there to get rid of dresses I can't wear. Sure, one of them retailed for $120 when I bought it, but I'll take what I get, right? So now I'm going to drag the 20-something other outfits I can't wear and see if I can get people to "donate" to the Keep Amber Skating for the Next 2 Weeks Fund. Should be interesting. ;)

And in other news, I've decided to try my hand at the high-testers level workout at the rink tomorrow. 45 minutes of constant movement on the ice? I just might keel over and die. It'll be good for me, though. . .right? :P
