Have you heard of UK doing any section stacking with scholarship students?

I have not seen stacking at all. One of the guys I study with says his friend has experienced that at another law school. It is really sad that some schools resort to that.

What other schools did you consider other than UK?

What made you choose UK?

I considered UofL NKU dayton Univ. of Cinci. Univ of Tenn.

I ended up only applying to UofL NKU and Dayton. I didn't apply to Cinci or Tenn. because if I was accepted to UK I would choose it over those two. I figured if I was accpepted to those two then UK would accept me also. I appled to UofL NKU and dayton as back up schools in case I didn't get into UK.

I wanted to stay in state so I could get in state tuition so that lowered my choices to UK NKU or UofL unless I got a scholarship from an out of state school. So really once I was accepted to all of the schools I applied to it became a decision between UofL and UK. UofL gave me a half ride while UK offered me nothing. I choose UK for a few reasons. I went to Uk for undergrad so I am very comfertable with the campus and I love the city. I also have friends in lexington so that makes it easier. UK also carries more respect in state than UofL and I plan on practicing in KY. Basically I knew law school would be very stressful and I knew being somewhere I am comfertable would make it go much smoother. I have not regreted my decision.

Do you guys have a Bar Review? If so, who picks the bars? Do you have a favorite?

What kind of social events does the school have?

Sorry to throw so many questions at you...I'm down to my final two schools and just want to get as much information on each as possible. Thanks again!

Law school is a really big investment so ask any question you have.

I don't believe we have a bar review.

We have the barristers ball which is basically a law school prom. It is a open bar and everyone dresses up. The event sold out before I could get tickets, but everyone I talked to had a good time. We also have a halloween party which was really fun. They rented out a bar and everyone was given 5 free drinks. Also the different Caucus and groups have events that you can get invovled in.

I'm considering UK Law and Las Vegas' Boyd School of Law. I sent in my deposit to UK, but if I choose Vegas, I guess I'll just eat it. I have in state tuition at KY but a nice scholarship at Boyd, making it cheaper than instate in KY. I'm really having a hard time choosing between the two and my biggest worry is that if I move to Vegas I will be completely away from any support system and will know absolutely no one.

The biggest drawbacks I see to UK are that I went there for undergrad and am afraid I am picking the 'easy' choice. Also, when I visited the campus the building seemed very poorly maintained. There were water stains all over the walls and ceilings in the courtroom and there were even sections of dry-wall buldging from water damage.

I am worried about the job market for both schools, but I feel like at Boyd I would have a better chance of employment after graduation, especially in the state of NV, because it is the only law school in NV.

Any advice on UK or UNLV would be helpful or how to pick the 'right' school.

I also went to UK for undergrad so I understand the appeal of staying in Lexington. I really do not know much about UNLV so I can't compare the two schools. The job market is rough everywhere. Uk is considered the top law school in Kentucky and you will be competitive in the local job market with a degree from UK. The building is old, I cannot deny that. Honestly though it doesn't really bother me. With the stresses of law school the last thing I care about is when the building was built. Everything works and that is all I personally care about. As far as having a support system, that is the reason I stayed at UK. Law school is very stressful. I didn't want the stress of learning a new town and having to find all new friends on top of school. In the end the right school is the one that will help you find the job you want and where you are comfortable. Three years can be long and terrible if you don't like the school you are at. I personally love Lexington and UK. My classmates are great and I do not regret my choice. Except right now but that is only because I am in the middle of finals. :D Good luck with your decision and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

deposit's in and I'm super excited to be in Lex this fall.

Well, provided I find a place to live. When did the housing packet get mailed out and was it helpful at all? I'm thinking I'll secure a place in June/early July and then move in August...does that sound normal?

Where I went to UK undergrad I had already found a place in March. I really don't remember what the packet said or when they sent it out. I would advise using craigslist and other apartment finding sites to look on your own.

We had our first mentor meeting the other day. It looks like you all will have a picnic event, a bar night, and probably go to Legends baseball game before school starts. These events are great ways to meet your classmates and get to know your mentor before classes begin.

I will probably be in Lexington starting in the fall. Do you know anything about the "Academic Success" program? The website states that it is week long program held the week before orientation and also includes weekly meetings during the semester. How intensive are the weekly meetings during the year? Do professors at UK ban laptops during class sessions?

Thanks and good luck on finals.

I did not participate in the Academic success, but I asked a friend and he said this:
They are not that intensive...... they are as "intensive" as those other noon meetings we had during 1st semester: basically a lecture on helpful stuff

Now that week before school.. it definitely gives you a JOLT on the workload
so if anything.... if somoene has a I am just playing around attitude...... That week of Academic success will give you a rude awakening, that you aint in Kansas anymore :)
it's a "mock" week.... with ridiculous amount of reading assigned
so if a person skips academic success...... they will get the same jolt the 1st week or two, lol
but its nice to at least get a jolt before it really counts... :)
Basically it seems to just prepare you for what law school will be like then give you helpful advice along the way.

Some profs. do ban laptops. I have only had one of mine do it this year. I think most profs. have no problem with laptops. Facebook can be a distraction though. Also can be useful if your friend gets called on and doesn't know the answer. You can facebook chat them the page or the answer.

I will need all the help I can get on finals. :|

I am sure they do. But I have never had a fellow student tell me they got in off of the waitlist. Good luck to you.

I will also throw out some advice, so that I can keep from studying property a little bit longer.

Do nothing over the summer. Hang out with your family and friends and read for pleasure if you enjoy it. I see no benefit to reading law materials before you get here. Law school will be there before you know it and you will miss the freedom. So enjoy the summer and do not worry about law school. If you get accepted then you are smart enough to do the work.

One thing I was nervous about was the Socratic method. I came from UK where the classes are so big you rarely interact with your teachers. So I really didn't know what to expect or how well I would handle it. In the end it isn't that big of a deal and you get used to it. Also every professor teaches differently. Though none of mine have used complete lecture, some do lecture at times. The first week is about getting adjusted to each profs. style and learning what they expect out of you.

Property is terrible. I do not know a single student who does not hate it. My entire 1L class is on facebook chat as soon as that class begins. It will be over tuesday at noon thank god. 3 hour essay test on property is the best way to start your tuesday morning.

Hi, thanks for this thread, I appreciate seeing your thoughts and answers.

I'm curious about scholarships for 2L/3L. Do very many people get one? Any idea how much they tend to be?

What about summer employment- did most people in your class find positions?

For the other members of the Class of 2013- have you joined the facebook group yet??

Your welcome. You all should be getting a packet of essays in the next few weeks on a bunch of topics. I think you all will enjoy reading them. I know I enjoyed the essays wrote by my mentors.

As for the scholarships for 2L and 3L's, I really do not know. I didn't apply for any and most of my friends already have some form of scholarship or aid.

As for jobs I don't know the numbers but a lot of people were not able to find jobs. If I had to guess I would say at least 33 percent could not find a job. Maybe as much as half. Also, most that did find jobs are not getting paid. I know my job is unpaid, but i am getting great experince so I am ok with it. Of course one of my friends is making over 1500 a week. But he is an exception. Grades are not enough right now. You also need to be good at interviews.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Also, pretzel thanx for the good luck wish in property, it seemed to pay off. I just got my grade back today. :)

Good, glad it went well. :P

And the job situation sounds about like what I expected. I'm keeping my summer job boss in a holding pattern because I have a potential offer for an unpaid internship locally . . . but obviously if I can land something in Kentucky or even better in Lex I'll have to find a part-time job to fill the cracks then. Cross that bridge when I come to it.

So, I got my parking pass the other day, and now I'm in the throes of apartment searching. I'm not worried about options but I am curious as to whether you'd recommend living really close (like, walking distance) or just pretty close. There's obvious upsides to both, I know, and downsides to both. You said you were off Richmond Road, right?

Edit--yeah, Java, I'm in the facebook group . . . but why the crap is the member list hidden now?!

Yea there is no reason to worry about jobs right now. Around november you can do that.

Yes I do live off of richmond road. I think living within walking distance would be fine. Really just find somewhere to live that you will feel comfortable. It only takes me about 10 minutes to get to class. Which is really nice. Just find somewhere you will enjoy studying.

So I just got one of my grades today and two of them yesterday. So never underestimate how long law profs. will take to turn in your grades. I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and doing nothing related to law. Please don't spend your summer trying to prepare for law classes. There is plenty of legal reading in your future. Whenever you get your schedules I can give some info on professors.
