Top Law Schools

Please do not join the discussion to bash those of us not attending top schools. I am excited to attend law school in the fall and would love some optimism to balance the negativity that plagues this site for those not making into T14 schools!

One of my professors is doing really well at a NW Indiana law firm that he is a partner of (Valpo grad). I guess you could look up the employment statistics of people who graduate from South Texas. Lots of success stories there. I met a former JAG officer who graduated from Valpo.

I am all for positivity! There's not enough of it in TLS world! Bring on the happy stories!!!

Work hard and study hard and make it happen! Even if you don't transfer you'll be alright. I work at a law firm right now where 4 of the attorneys went to T3 schools and are making bank.

To be honest, there isn't a huge difference between most T3 and 4 schools.

How about recently? I know there are a lot of T3 and T4s with great jobs. For those currently practicing, is it still possible to hire on as a T3 and make good money?

We hired a Wayne State grad last year... that's a T3 school. And another one back in 2006.

While we're on the topic, does anyone have any t-14 success stories? Please don't bash me if you're attending HYS. I want to hear success stories from the lower t-14

Hahaha I guess so. I dunno though... T3 schools like Wayne State and Michigan State do really well in MI. And T3 school does alright ($50-70,000ish) in their own state. And there is so much room to grow. After 5 or 6 years, its not about where you went to school but what you've done since.


And I said this earlier tonight... I've met Cooley Law grads (America's disgrace of a law school) that make six figures.

There is a decent chance the Federal Reserve could print so much money that you're debt will be wiped away by inflation. Now under this scenario you will be pushing a wheelbarrow full of money to store to buy a stale loaf of bread. But, still, that's better than the alternatives you are looking at.....

Going to a T3 or T4 can be risky. I know a Stanford grad who no job, and a Columbia grad who is forced into shit law.

I know someone who graduated from St. Thomas 2 years ago. She had a rough time finding a job for awhile, looking in FL, CT, NJ, and NY, but eventually after working her ass off she got a job at a firm in NYC--she's very persistent and aggressive! She is working 1 or 2 other jobs in addition to this, though. It's because she wants to make more money and live a nice rich life, apparently, and not because she physically has to. She lives on her own in a nice part of Harlem, and still makes time to travel to different cities on the weekends and go to the bar after work. I'm sure her story is not typical, but she is definitely an example of someone who succeeded through hard work (no connections, no lawyers in her family, btw). I understand the TLS animosity towards tier 3 schools, but you can't expect the name on your degree to carry you through life stress free either. Getting a job is about putting yourself out there and networking. Your life is what you make it out to be!

I know a senior partner at a major firm that went to a T3. I would be lucky to get hired there after law school.

I think a lot of it is about your class rank and the level of capability. What I mean is at the low 1% of your class in a T14 = shitty or no job. Low 1% of your class at a T4 school = flippin burgers.

However, top 10% at T14 = bank. Top 10% at T4 = a solid 50,000 a year job.

The serious answer is it is possible to make a good living, but almost every student winds up with a lot of debt and a job that doesn't pay well.

IMO if you can't get T1, fucking retake the LSAT. I don't care if you don't want to you need to.

If after that you still can't get T1 here is what you do. Work for a year with a fulltime job and a part time job, save as much money as you can. At least 10K

Go to the highest ranked school in an area you want to live that will give you a full ride. If your scholarship gets revoked you quit.

This way you'll have minimal debt.

A T2-4 degree isn't worth crippling debt.

If you can't get a full ride at T4 you are too stupid to go to law school.

But if in fact you can't and you want to be an attorney... go. But be smart and careful how much debt you go in because you may not be able to pay it back easily.
