All the cleaners in town are very expensive compared to the ones further out...if you have a car.

How far out are you talking? I was thinking of going to the one in the complex with Busch's since it's the closest to me. Which reminds me that I have to do my dry cleaning .

That's where I go. They are great. They thought they ruined my tie, and offered to replace it without me asking. Then they ended up being able to get all of the bled ink out anyhow. They also did a good job pressing my suits.

Where do you live? I'm in Harbor House.

Good to know they are solid.

I'm living near Busch's, but not in any of the main complexes (HH/Lake Village/Woodland Mews).

Since this thread is full of admitted students, would anybody mind giving me a little advice on the "Why Michigan" essay?

I've written one, and it reflects my perhaps romanticized view of Michigan as being the law school that's most likely to create strong bonds among its students. I graduated from a college with top academics but pretty weak school spirit, so I'm kind of awed by the stories of the Big House and the loyal alumni network.

My essay begins with a short vignette about how I have just gotten to know my cousins, from whom I had been practically estranged all my life. It emphasizes the importance I place on friends and family, and then I move on to say how I feel that Michigan is the law school that most values such relationships in its student body.

I'm just a little afraid that it's "soft" and doesn't address the academics enough. Do you think that'll be a problem?

Thanks to anybody who answers!

Having just survived Orientation I can tell you we spent a lot more time hearing about how Michigan is more "collegial" than everywhere else (it was actually referred to as the "Disneyland" of law schools on more than one occasion). I personally think that the "Why Michigan" essay is SUPPOSED to be about more than academic credentials. We are VERY proud of being the friendliest law school around. (And I understand there is a little bit of excitement surrounding the football team on occasion.)

Anyway, welcome and good luck!

I thought the consensus had kind of moved away from Why X essays? But what do I know.

I think at Michigan the Why X essay is very important. I can say with some certainty that it played a substantial role in my admission and scholarship offer at Michigan (the best school I got into).

My essay basically started out saying that academics were not the reason I wanted to go to Michigan (basically, I said there are a lot of good law schools out there, but Michigan is my first choice because of community stuff). Worked ok for me!

I've heard reports that I can put all of my lawopen emails into one email. Any idea on how to do this? I'm missing out on many important emails because I'm too afraid to sift through a thousand offers to sell and buy football tickets.

The instructions to set digest are in the bottom of every lawopen e-mail. You will miss most sales as items move quick and it only sends out once a day.

There are instructions at the bottom of every email that goes out on lawopen. Digest sucks though because the email comes in the middle of the night and is already stale by the time you get it. You should set up Maize email to forward to your gmail account and then make a gmail filter for lawopen emails.

He taught last fall. This is his last year....he's retiring.

Damn. After hearing so many folks praise him (and a few cringe remembering his Socratic inquisitions), I was hoping he'd have one last hurrah in the 2012-13 year. Thanks, blowhard.

He is, however, teaching commercial transactions this semester... at 8 am.

Yup, part of the "row of transfers". But I've been away on interviews since Thursday and won't be back in class until tomorrow. Been keeping up with the reading though, otherwise I'd drown. I feel like the world's biggest idiot in that class, but I figure it's common since it's way not easy.

I'll kind of be pissed (in a not-angry way) if he teaches again next fall though. I took the class this semester because they told us he was gone after this semester and it was worth taking him.

Is anyone else familiar with J.J. White's plans next year? I am hearing mixed reports. :(

He said in class it was probably his last year. He doesn't seem to be the retired type though so who knows if he really will or not. He had his hip (or knee forget) replaced after last semester so his original impetus for retiring may not be there anymore.

Kind of a dumb question, but do law students get access to [a/the] gym? I basically go insane when I have to study a lot and don't get a chance to exercise, and no way I'll be doing an outside run in the middle of winter.

Yes. As a student at the University of Michigan you get access to the gyms available to the whole university (IMSB, CCRB, NCRB). The CCRB and the IMSB are the closest of the free gyms. Additionally, law students can buy access to the Business School gym which is about half a block from the law school campus.

Anyone willing to give me a tour of the law school when I visit in early November?
