Has anyone heard anything in regards to need or merit based aid? Does receiving one precludes receiving the other?

Merit aid offers came in the admissions phone call and they'll email you if you're being considered for another scholarship. For need aid you just submit the FAFSA and Need Access forms.

Receiving one does not preclude the other. They stack. You must complete the need access to qualify for a need based grant. All you have to do is put in UCLA's code when you are doing the need access and they will automatically consider you. I received my need based grant information the very next day after being accepted (my need access was completed about a week prior to this), so UCLA is very fast at giving you an offer.

Merit based aid is also considered automatically and this is done before you know that you are accepted. If you were accepted and received merit based aid you would have been told on the phone call from Dean Schwartz.

I'm sorry that I'm not quite sure where I'm getting this from, but I remember reading somewhere around here that if merit was not offered in the original phone call, that is by no means the end of the discussion. I think for those who don't get an offer right away and who are very serious about the school, it's acceptable to get in touch with admissions at some point.

eta: Just looked back through the UCLA applicant's thread, and it looks as though this is addressed on p.14

No, I received an e-mail a few weeks after I was admitted requesting an interview for Merit-based aid.

I know it took a little while for mine to come after my call, but definitely not more than 2 weeks! You might want to call and ask.

Not sure yet, I still have a lot of schools to hear back from! The $$ and weather are very tempting though.

Anybody else receive a phone call from a current 1L tonight? I thought it was a rewarding bit of outreach on their part. Definitely boosted my interest in UCLA.
