Can't submit apps until December 1st. From what I could tell for 1L SAs, Texas ties + highest grades or Female and minority students + high grades (top third). I know quite a few top 10 percenters that struck out for 1L SAs and it seemed to be mainly out of state guys. (One hiring partner at a big texas firm told me they rarely hire 1L guys).

The school holds a public interest fair early in the spring and it seemed like most people got their jobs from that or from judicial internships.

As for pay, I think a few things with companies have pay/stipends, but most jobs are unpaid.

Seems legit. I'm going to assume most of the 1L SA positions, as well as those for 2L are in Houston rather than Dallas...

One question though. For the public interest fair, I remember being told during one of the visits that public interest grants for summer jobs are fairly easy to get, but I didn't even think to ask whether those are applicable to government internships or if they're only granted for things like legal aid or human rights, etc?

510(c)(3) or government work which is pretty much everything except for judicial internships which are not covered.

Am I the only one who feels less happy after finding an apartment? These prices.

You're not alone, my friend. Hopefully when I'm not coming from out of state and can take some more time to look around (2L and 3L) I can find something cheaper, even if it means a bit of a drive. I compromised a bit to be close to campus, didn't want to take on any added stress during 1L.

I'm pretty sure the extra money I'm paying probably makes up for the stress of worrying about a commute.

I got a close apartment this year, will probably do same next year and 3l will be tired of paying close to campus.

Also, no gas helps a little.

How did the Out-Of-State waivers work for those of you who got them? Are they coupled with all merit-based scholarships, or are they issued independently? The website language seems to indicate the former, but I would be surprised if that were the case.

I actually thought a 1/1 near campus for <$1,000/month was a solid deal.

My home town you can get a decent 1 bedroom fro 450. And off parmer there are decent 2 bedrooms for 1010.

It is... I have quite a bit of breathing room below that and the place is really really nice. Just small, but it's only me, so I don't even care.

But neither of them are near the LS, and I have all bills included. Way I see it living up at parmer, when including traffic, would be probably 1-2 fillups per week including errands, whereas I will live closer than I currently do and I fill up 1-2 times/month. So, that's increases fuel expenses by roughly $200/month just to get to school and back. That, plus the time saved, makes it really worth it to me.

Last thing I'd want is an 1.5 hour bus commute while trying to make it to final exams.

Exactly. I hate feeling rushed, so being near would be very nice.

Yea, I got a mile and a half away from Law School at a reasonable 2 bedroom price. Still, I wish it was cheaper.

Moving down at the end of the month. Our apartment is in south Austin so I'll have a commute, but I can avoid 35 if I need to.

I also purchased the "big ticket" and just noticed (too late) that the FB group has a group put together. My luck I'll be sitting with a bunch of drunk undergrads.

I'll be moving there in August but I believe I'm going to quit my job mid July. I took the risk of telling my employer that I'll be attending law school with the hope that it would open a door for post-grad employment, which ended up being successful, however, it also somewhat backfired because certain others don't seem to be too fond of the fact that I'm leaving and are therefore taking advantage of me, but oh well. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

I'm not sure that sitting with a bunch of drunk law students is as much of a trade up as you think it is :)

They're assigned seats though, right?

That would mean you're stuck with people you don't even know, right?

I'm not sure how it works but I imagine they're assigned. I did put that I was a law student in the comments section so hopefully I'm not totally screwed.

Yah Attax and I can get $3 brews at Crown & Anchor and be home before the shuttle even arrives. Totally worth it :P
