Re: Michigan Class of 2017
Are there any Ann Arborites who can offer some advice on where in town to live, or more specifically, where not to live? I'll be a 1L next year, and if possible I'd like to avoid getting stuck in an area that is loud or prone to house parties. Are there areas more populated by grad-students than others? I've never been to Ann Arbor and actually won't be able to visit it until the summer, so I'm kind of stuck seeking for advice this way. Also, should I be looking to sign a lease ASAP? Is it even feasible to wait until the summer? I'm looking to be close to the law school (like, within a 15 minute walk). Basically, are there any areas that I should avoid - or is pretty much anything near the central campus more or less created equal? My SO and I are still deciding on whether she's going to come with me to Ann Arbor or not... so I won't be doing the Lawyer's club. Thanks for any insight you can share.
If there is a better place to find this info, I'd appreciate any pointers. The Michigan threads just seem pretty dead as of late, unfortunately.

Try the West Side and over by Kerrytown. That said, you're going to want to move on leases sooner rather than later - the housing in Ann Arbor goes early and quick and there's not a whole lot left been for August lease start dates.sobrickay wrote:Are there any Ann Arborites who can offer some advice on where in town to live, or more specifically, where not to live? But if you don't want a lot of undergrads I'd steer away from the area around Packard and State Street. most of those are likely signed already anyway though.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not so opposed to undergrads, just trying to avoid party central. But I also want to be able to bike/walk to the library without too much hassle.
I found this website which seems to be saying the same thing, if anyone else needs some help with their search:

Re: Michigan Class of 2017
Just FYI, if this applies to anyone else: I submitted my official transcript and had it sent as a pdf from my UG institution, so it went via email to law.jd.admissions@umich.edu which they received and processed no problem. As long as it comes from the UG institution directly, not you, this is a fine way to submit per my phone conversation with someone in the admissions office. Saved me a couple'a bucks, so hopefully this helps someone else out too.

For anyone who is looking for housing this summer:
I am subletting my apartment at Landmark and my suitemate is also a Law student. For those who aren't familiar, Landmark is an extremely nice apartment complex which is perfect for quiet studying while being really close to the Law School and the center of campus. It has every amenity you can think of including a gym and hot tub. http://liveatlandmark.com/photos. Price is negotiable!
If you are interested, please email me at gbellack@umich.edu.

Re: Michigan Class of 2017
I'm an MLaw 2010 graduate with a condo in Ann Arbor that I'm looking to rent, starting this summer or fall. I've been renting it to another MLaw student from 2011-present, but he's graduating this May.
The condo is in Woodland Mews, which is a couple miles south of campus. It's 1BR/1 bath/950 sq. ft. All the appliances were new in 06-07. My husband and I lived there for about five years, including while I was in law school. We loved the location--about a block from a good grocery store, coffee shop, drug store, dry cleaner's, and bakery. I drove to the commuter parking lot when I was in school--it's maybe a 2 mile drive, takes about 5 minutes if you get stuck at the lights. From the commuter lot, there's a free shuttle that drops off at the law school.
I'm asking $975 for rent. PM me if you're interested, and I can send you some pictures.
Hi Guys,
I'm still looking for a renter. My current tenant is moving out on June 1, so the place will be available shortly after that. Asking $950 OBO. I would prefer no pets, since I'm a long-distance landlord, but a single cat could be okay.
PM me with any questions or to look at pictures. It's a nice, quiet place, and works well for an individual or a couple.
Thanks!

Hey all, thrilled to announce I paid my seat deposit yesterday and will be attending MLaw this fall! (Barring some very unlikely waitlist movement + money).

Thanks! And yes you guessed it. I realized halfway through the cycle my name probably didn't disguise me as much as I would have liked. O well. So you're EE or you mean just tech background in general?yost wrote:Congrats! I assume "EE" refers to electrical engineering?
