Though I'm fairly happy with it, I would love to see it go a little higher. When do you think the best time to send a negotiation email would be? Immediately, or closer to their deadline?

Thanks!!

when did you submit your financial aid docs and when did you get admitted?

I got admitted in the first wave, january I believe, and I got my aid docs in about 2 weeks after that

This is what I'm trying to figure out as well...I guess it wouldn't hurt to try?

Someone at the office told me I should send them any awards I'm seriously considering, whether they be need or merit-based. I can't imagine why they would care about other merit offers if they're only awarding need-based aid.

Not really familiar with the aid process, but I thought only YSH really offered need-based aid while others said they did but it was really based on merit?

My NYU scholarship was most definitely not based on merit given that my GPA is under their 25th and I'm poor af.

It's definitely not only need-based. They call it that, but you're right in thinking it also includes unofficial merit.

Just got my award letter. I'm still a bit in shock, but I was offered $90K, my highest T14 offer. I can't believe that they would offer more than NYU, Chicago, Duke and UVA. Cannot wait until ASW tomorrow! This may be the end of my cycle!

Wow that's awesome, congrats!! :D

Any idea of Columbia will still process your merit-aid if you haven't submitted the questionnaire/W2s

Whoa do you need to fill out documents to be considered for merit-based aid? I never did any of that since I thought it was for needs-based only (which I'm ineligible for).

Just got my award letter as well! I'm pretty objectively pleased with the actual number, but NYU also offered me $20k higher. Does anyone know how the process for appealing works for Columbia? Do I just call and send them a scan of my letter from NYU?

Yeah, you need to fill out all of the needs-based documents even if you're only looking for merit. It's pretty dumb. They definitely do give merit, though, because I just got a decent amount of $ and there's no way that it was because of need, given my parents' income.

When did you guys (who have received awards) apply for aid? I wonder if they are going in order?

+1. I initially almost didn't send anything for need-based because my parent's income/assets definitely preclude me from need. However, after reading around TLS I decided to send in the stuff for need-based consideration. I just got decent $ (at least for what I was expecting which wasn't much if anything) so there must be some merit in there and/or they truly believe and understand the fact that my parents won't be helping for law school.

I sent in my final docs right before the March 1st deadline. There was obviously this first big wave of financial aid info but I'm not sure if it now i going to trickle out or be in subsequent waves.

Is the aid questionnaire posted somewhere on Columbia's website?

Yeah it's in the admitted students site under Financial Aid info and then Financial Aid Forms. It's also in the admitted students handbook they mailed out. It's a green page that you can fill out by hand and then fax it in (that's what I did).

Since it's a soft deadline for financial aid and there is probably some more applicants to be admitted I'm sure you guys are fine if you get your stuff in soon.
