I was also there at ASD last week. They seemed quite sincere. They talked about how at Columbia, there's no sense of divide between people who want to do PI and those who don't. They also focused on how PI isn't monolithic and can encompass a wide variety of career options from government to international organization to non-profit etc. Some of the professors during the coffee chats also mentioned their connections to PI jobs at the state department/international organizations.barrelofmonkeys wrote:Could the two of you who mentioned the PI-focus talk a bit more about that? I'm curious what sorts of things gave you the vibe / how sincere you felt it was / etc.

When the financial aid material says to "submit" 2013 tax returns, does that mean to send them by mail?
Also, congrats to the new admits!

You can mail, fax, or even email. I faxed mine as it seemed the quickest and safest way to get it to them.tlsapp2017 wrote:When the financial aid material says to "submit" 2013 tax returns, does that mean to send them by mail?

When does CLS start doing non-named merit aid? End of the month? I remember reading it somewhere, but don't remember where. (I'll admit I'm being a bit lazy - midterms and what not.)

I was told not to email, for security reasons. Fax is probably best.drevo wrote:You can mail, fax, or even email. This is maybe a stupid question but can you appeal a butler and ask for more $? Or are the fellowship programs basically set

Right, I mean I am excited about the Butler but I feel like I can leverage a full ride at NYU (Obviously they wouldn't like give me a Hamilton, but maybe a bit more money?) especially since they're super competitive with each other... just want to make sure it is kosher though before I send an email. I will do more digging/report back...Theopliske8711 wrote:I'm wondering the same. What's the worst that can happen? They can't reject you... Don't you have Ruby? I feel like that is more competitive than the Vandy. Although you should use them together. It's your turn now; they played their card by accepting you. You have two fantastic other choices, so you have the leverage now.residentemma wrote:Right, I mean I am excited about the Butler but I feel like I can leverage a full ride at NYU (Obviously they wouldn't like give me a Hamilton, but maybe a bit more money?) especially since they're super competitive with each other... just want to make sure it is kosher though before I send an email. Yeah true, I guess I can include both. Just not sure if those merit programs work differently than other aid, but you're right the email can't hurtTheopliske8711 wrote:What's the worst that can happen? They can't reject you... Is there a way to check on the status of my financial aid application without calling? I want to make sure all of my documents have been received.

Deferred from last year... wondering if I should go to the April ASD. Are ASDs fun? Do you get free stuff?

the water bottles they gave out are not bad.francesfarmer wrote:Deferred from last year... wondering if I should go to the April ASD. Are ASDs fun? Do you get free stuff?
i thought it was really valuable to talk to current students, but if you are already definitely going to CLS, i don't think that matters as much...
if you're planning on living in university housing, i think it's a good idea to visit some of the apartments so that you know what to request when you apply!

I'm committed, I live in the city so I won't be in university housing, and I went to Columbia for undergrad so I'm familiar with the campus and the grad housing anyway...they don't give out any t-shirts? I want a t-shirt.Marshmallow wrote:the water bottles they gave out are not bad.francesfarmer wrote:Deferred from last year... wondering if I should go to the April ASD. Are ASDs fun? Re: Columbia Class of 2017
No T-shirts, sorry. The food was excellent though, and I had a good time overall. If you're already in the city, I would recommend going to just meet people and have a good time (unless it's difficult for you to take off from work)francesfarmer wrote:I'm committed, I live in the city so I won't be in university housing, and I went to Columbia for undergrad so I'm familiar with the campus and the grad housing anyway...they don't give out any t-shirts?
