You're not. They are trying to find the most special student to contact us.

That must be it

yes, plenty of people have. Many weren't very happy about it in the SLS thread, because we're all frantically hoping for some Stanford love.

Do they really match these with the student? I looked mines up and they have a shockingly similar background (ie same undergrad ect). Anyway pretty cool. Though I feel like I know everything just from TLS already.

I just got the student email now, too. They definitely try to connect you with people they think have similar backgrounds. I actually have known the student they had contact me for the last several years.

It really is a nice touch and I can't help ranking the schools that have done this kind of service higher on my list than the ones that admitted me and then forgot about me.

Oh yeah, I definitely keep a running mental tab on stuff like this.

It is nice, but you should try not to let it distract you from the things that matter (employment & cost).

If you're comparing NYU and Columbia at equal cost, though, then by all means go off the number of times that they've contacted you. :)

kershka, did you mention that you took up Dean Morrison on his offer in the acceptance letter to email him to be connected with faculty in a particular area of interest, or am I totally making that up?

Someone said that, I believe, but it wasn't me.

ETA: I went back through the thread to try and find that post and I couldn't. Maybe we both hallucinated the same post?

He responded within 24 hours with a clearly personalized response, saying he'd help me find someone in the field to answer questions.

Just thought I'd pass that on in case anyone was hesitant to take him up on his offer. It could turn out to be a great way to get info on NYU directly from professors in the field you're interested in.

kershka, I found the post. Looks like we weren't hallucinating after all!

Indeed, you did-I just missed it.

On a related note, I got my NYU letter/personalized sticky note today (which was exciting since I thought they might not be sending these out anymore).

I got the current student email and it was from a kid who I sorta know as we run in similar circles.

I also wrote in my personal statement about which area of law I am interested in (and it's all over my resume) and one of the professors specializing in that field emailed me. And it was also crazy because last year, before I was accepted, I ran across a certain legal issue in the course of my work and used one of his papers as support for my position!

No problem. Just to follow up on my original post, Dean Morrison did put me in contact with a professor in my field of interest. This professor was also very prompt and willing to answer any questions.

I agree with some of the other posters that while these sorts of things aren't as important as money and job prospects, they certainly do make me feel good about NYU.

Luckily NYU is good on the job prospect front. So the only wild card really is the money thing. If they come in with a good offer, all this effort on their part is really going to make me feel good about choosing them if that's what I ultimately do.

I like how my contact literally said, "I know that our interests have very little in common..." I guess I'm an odd duck

Checking in. When should we expect unnamed scholarship offers? Do we need to submit the Need Access form first? If so, I've never been more impatient to receive my W-2.

Yeah, while the student they connected me with had a lot in common with me, my alum contact was a rather odd choice. I think some of it has to come down to how many people are willing to participate. Still, it's a nice resource to have.

+1 to this. While I'd never base an entire decision on something like this, we'll call it a "soft" for the school.

I'm gonna make sure and use my leverage for a second pizza box.

NYU: we would like to offer you a full ride in our business track.
Me: ...but do I get a second pizza box? Cuz Georgetown said they'd give me sticky notes and I think that's a pretty great offer.

Received an email from a 1L who answered my one question with 5 paragraphs- really nice of him and a great representative of NYU.

Also received an invitation to a cocktail party with two NYU alums in DC- that's really cool, and is something I will remember when it comes to crunch time for decisions.
