Looking pretty unlikely that I'm going to NYU at this point.
Are there not more loans you can take out?

Are GradPlus loans that bad that it wouldn't be worth going because of it?

Pretty sure the point is that (s)he doesn't want to pay sticker when (s)he's at both 75ths.

Right, I was just answering the other question. I agree that a 75/75 should never pay sticker and I don't think he/she will. Don't give up hope yet. You can and should negotiate that up. They know what you're worth.

Exactly. There ARE other loans I can take out to bridge the gap, but I feel like I shouldn't have to take out quite that much in loans. And as someone else mentioned, it feels hard to start negotiating up from zero. I think I'll have an easier time with initial offers from other schools (hopefully). But we'll see!

Truckstop - couldn't agree more. As much as I would like, in theory, to attend, it's not worth $270k. Or more.

COA was $81k last year. This year it'll probably be around $84k (3.7% increase). If COA continues to increase at 3.5%, that's over $320,000 owed at repayment.

Cotiger I'm curious as to how accurate you think that COA number is. I've tried to put together a rough budget and I come in a few thousand under that. The $81k is for 9 months correct?

That's the 9 monther given by the school. Honestly, COL is going to vary drastically based on where you choose to live. 3BR in Bushwick ($800) vs 1BR right next to campus ($2400) is an almost $20,000 twelve-month difference right there. Moreso than other places, COL in NYC is hugely variable, so there's really not an "accurate" COL number.

If you want to send me what you're thinking, I'd be more than happy to tell you if it looks reasonable.

But broadly, their COL number is pretty accurate if you're living near-ish campus and being budget conscious but not a complete ascete. So, basically being a normal student.

I've heard that schools generally inflate their cost-of-living numbers so that students can borrow more money than really needed just to be safe. That being said, there will definitely be lots of law school class of 2017 students with 300k+ in debt.

This makes my current debt estimate not look as bad lol :D. I still need to negotiate a much bigger scholarship.

Oh sure, it's not too difficult to get under the COL. They budgeted $22,396 last year for the nine months. If you live out in lower-rent Brooklyn with multiple roommates (commute ~35 minutes by subway), and rarely go out to eat or drink, then you could get that down to around $16,000.

But if you want, say, a studio in the LES (commute ~10 minutes by bike, 15 minutes by subway, or 20 minutes by foot), and be able to go out a little more often, that COL is going to rise to more like $26,000.

Change the LES studio to the East Village with a roommate (same commute), again with going out a moderate amount, and you're right at that $22,000 COL.

Variants of that third option is what I imagine is a pretty typical 1L experience.

I'm sorry if this has been posted in this thread already, but how are people finding housing for the admitted students weekends? I didn't see anything in the confirmation e-mail about housing...

I think you're on your own for housing.

Yeah I figured as much :( I wish they would give us an option to stay with a current student or something if they're requiring us to come to campus for a scholly interview, though.

Well tbf they're requiring you to come on campus for an interview that could be worth $160k. So I could see why they would think you'd want to come irrespective of whether or not they provide housing :D

I'm sure there are kids who borrow the full COA and then get a studio in Greenwich, which I assume costs $3000 per month.

a) You can get a 1BR for around $2400/mo.

b) That's still completely insane.

c) I'm sure you're right about that.

This financial aid stuff is scaring me. Since I'm below the 25% LSAT and probably won't get any $ can someone convince me NYU is worth sticker?

I know for the RTK scholarship they put you up in a hotel with other invited applicants for the interviews.
