So I've finally started looking at financial aid information since I figure it will take awhile to get my parents on board. Does Harvard use Need Access? From what it looks like on their website they do not, and I noticed they aren't listed under "Participating Schools" on the Need Access website. Just curious as I'd like to bring everything to my parents at once, especially since I'm going to be driving for hours to go through this stuff with them.

I'm fairly sure that Harvard gives you a "customized" application based on some preliminary questions, but I just want to be sure I'm not reading that wrong.

Browsing through the housing options right now. To me, having my own kitchen is at least as important having my own bathroom - as a college student I lived for the most part off food that I prepared myself. But time for cooking might be a luxury as a 1L and I need to save $$$, so now I'm thinking Gropius... I've been in the military for the past 3 years anyway, and I figured the arrangement is not going to be much different from what I have currently. I can live with that. It might be a different story for 2L, though, if my SO decides to accompany me then.

Question: If you live on one of the dorms, does anyone know where you would be having meals? Is there some sort of a meal plan for HLS students?

There are no meal plans for students. You can eat at the dining hall but it's pay as you go.

I'll probably end up using the communal kitchen in my dorm and making weekly meals.

Yes, you are correct. You don't apply through the Need Access site. Apparently Harvard has two applications for financial aid. There is one for students applying for grants and loans and another for students only applying for loans.

You can visit http://www.law.harvard.edu/current/sfs/myaid/apply/applytype.html to decide which application you are going to be doing before you get to your parents' house, based on the financial aid timeline you have until mid-February to get this all sorted.

Thanks! I somehow missed that particular page when I was browsing. I really need to stop doing financial aid research when I'm tired, not like its important or anything, haha.

That was a great link, thanks! I didn't think to check the "current students" tab  .

I just checked the suggested hotels for the ASW. Everything is pretty expensive but I guess that's to be expected since it's Cambridge.

I know what you mean... it's a bit ridiculous. I have one person I use to be somewhat friends with from UG and I'm really considering offering him half what I'd pay at a hotel to stay on his couch.

I'm probably staying at a friend's house, but if not, I'll stay at a cheaper hotel farther away.

For any DCers not in the FB group, I think we might grab some drinks on Saturday afternoon... PM me or another DCer if interested!

umwat. Please say it ain't so. I'll be coming from CA but it didn't seem like it would cost THAT much. I'm hoping to find a couch to crash on though, and I'll be trying to snag that 200$ travel reimbursement.

Well that includes my wife coming as well so you can half that if you are single :) Unfortunately, I emailed Harvard about their travel subsidy and they are only doing it based on need this year. They said I would need to fill out the application for the need based application fee waiver. I don't think I am going to qualify for that.

Did I miss the NYC drinks (looks to me from the fb page like it didn't end up happening)?

Also, and stop me if this is not the appropriate forum to discuss this, but it seems if I choose HLS I will be funding 100% of my law school expenses with loans. I'm completely financially independent and my parents will not be making a significant contribution, if any, to my tuition/living expenses, but they make just enough that I don't seem to qualify for aid. In your opinion, is it still worth it to go to HLS and graduate with $275k+ debt (LST http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=harvard) rather than going to another t14 with a nice scholarship (not anything crazy like full ride but maybe 25%-50% covered)?

haha whoops, really should've saved that for something special. Maybe this means I'll end up at H next year. Definitely not a bad outcome lol

You should refer to this page: viewforum.php?f=1
The consensus is divided, but many will tell you that it's not really worth it to go to any law school at sticker. It depends a lot on what you want to do with your degree.

Yeah it was $445 when I booked just now. I think it is actually on the admitted students website about them only giving a stipend/subsidy to people who qualified for the application fee waiver.

CyanIdes Of March wrote:The subsidy is $300 according to the e-mail I got back from them.

Did they make you fill out the waiver application or was that just what they said it was if you qualified?
