For real you can't beat that Durham COL. As a married student the cost of living difference in terms of housing alone is easily 36,000 over three years, probably more, maybe significantly more. Not to mention that housing is generally much nicer in Durham than in the NE.

It seems like you would have better quality of life as well. More space, better weather, loads of nature, etc. The ability to just get away and go on a run in Duke Forest to clear your head could definitely benefit me in the classroom. There are a lot of appealing things about being in a smaller city as a student. It seems like all of these things could make LS a little easier to deal with.

Yeah I am 100% on board with the smaller city during law school thing. I mean, it's not like you're gonna be able to "experience NYC" or Boston for that matter while living on a student loan budget. I guess some people have family money though, but on the other hand time as a law student is limited. All that to say that Duke is looking pretty good... I withdrawn from all but 4 other schools; just waiting on financial aid.

So swag. That last place that didn't provide anything besides candy, definitely not getting any student's...
I wish the tour didn't just look at places between Durham/Chapel Hill. I wanted to check out some places closer to the school. I was able to look at some places in Durham though and was much more impressed.

Funniest thing heard on the #dukebustour2014, "I'm not that snobby, I can rough it. I mean look at me, I'm on a BUS in DURHAM."

I'm assuming he meant that 1L in general is hell, because it's certainly no worse here than anywhere else. In fact it's better here in a lot of ways.

Oohh we must have been on the same bus because I'm pretty sure all four buses went in a different order

Had a blast this weekend! It was great meeting everyone. It seems quite possible that I'll be heading to Durham this fall. :)

Are y'all thinking about living by yourself or thinking of having a roommate? I'm trying to decide, myself.

Also, I didn't do the apartment tour. Any great insight as to particular areas to be looking in?

They're spread around, all within 5 miles of the law school. Pinnacle Ridge and Alexan Garrett seem to be the most popular, but just use the list posted on the Facebook page for admitted students and cross-reference everything with ApartmentRatings.com.

Go on.....

This girl raises her hand for every question. The professor calls on her a couple of times at first. He stops calling on her and she literally interrupts him multiple times. He says: "okay, now you're speaking out of turn," to shut her up because he seriously couldn't complete consecutive sentences. She still raises hand for every question and the prof says "I'm not calling on you."

*gunmaster (despite all odds, suggestions, and opinions of man) continues to raise hand for EVERY QUESTION*

Finally, the professor (perhaps infatuated with her psychotic fucking persistence) calls on her for a YES OR NO question. "Well...why--" the professor stops her and says "no, you're answering not asking right now." Her response: "I don't know."

She also was writing, what I assumed to be, an accurate recording of every single word spoken in mock class. I can only assume that this is going to be later added to the next testament in the bible.
hope this person doesn't come here.

No she was legit. I think she may have had some issues. Not sure how she slipped by admissions actually. Maybe Duke should start interviews. All in all she was the only strange person I met. Everyone else was extremely down to earth, friendly, and not gunnerish or pretentious in any way.
She was at UVA, too, so she may have gotten through that interview somehow.

Yeah, that's her.
lol wonderful

I think I saw that she went to Georgetown. Hope she continues that path.

I'm still really undecided on apartments. I know I want a 1BR or Studio, but a lot of the places today (especially on the optional downtown tour) were out of my price range as someone who has never paid more than $550/month in rent (low COL state). It would be between Pinnacle Ridge, Alexan Garrett, and a place around 6-7 miles out called Hawthorne at the View. Hawthorne is in the $600-700 range and still looks gorgeous, but I'm worried that I'll be removed from everyone else (it's right around a border with Chapel Hill). Still, it's only 10-12 minutes from campus and is right by my hotel.

Unrelated: I tried Q Shack at a current student's reccomendation bevause I'm here until tomorrow morning. While it was great, I wrongly assumed there would be a fork in the bag (and my hotel has none!), so not only did I lose my Q Shack virginity, but I did so like a savage with my hands.
I feel like being somewhere where there are a good amount of 1L's would be important to me, just for the whole "making friends" aspect. Also, since it seems like getting around on the weekends involves sharing cabs for the most part, being somewhere with other Duke 1Ls would be advantageous lol
Sharing cabs plus the Shooters party bus. That was some kind of experience.

Just sent in my deposit today after this weekend's open house! Duke was already my first choice but I waited until after the open house to commit just in case.

Now I'm making calls to apartment complexes in the area. Those apartments on the tour were crazy expensive compared to a lot of others in Durham, I'm not particularly sure why we just saw those. At one point even our bus driver was telling us about more affordable places that would have been more useful to show us. Even their waiting list fees were ridiculous.
