This may be a stupid question, but if I e-mail the office of financial aid to inquire about a scholarship increase, should I address the e-mail to a specific person or just use a generic salutation? I never like using things like "To Whom it may concern," but I may have to.

Just got my scholarship offer -- $120,000

I wish this whole selecting the best law school thing wasn't so god damn difficult.

Deciding between duke and UVA right now- is there anyone in this thread who went to both ASWs and wants to comment? I went to UVA and was very
Impressed, but couldn't make it to dukes

I didn't personally, but from what I heard from others who have, they were both impressive with very similar pitches. Between the two, it seems largely to come down to financial aid and class size preference.

They are going to be very similar. Duke has a smaller class which is nice. You should probably go wherever is cheaper, which isnt always "best scholarship" so you need to look at total COA.

Just found this thread. Yes, ASW was absolutely amazing, and made Duke my #1 choice. Then I got accepted at Columbia. I'm now trying to negotiate a higher scholarship before I send in my deposit before the summer start deadline (4/11). I emailed Dean Hoye directly on Tuesday and have not received any reply whatsoever. Should I also email the financial aid office, or would that look a little too, I dunno, desperate or something?

I have a friend who went to both UVA and then to Duke's, he was leaning towards UVA after theirs but then after Duke's he's back to not sure. You can't go wrong with those two choices, it's just personal preference at that point.

That's probably worth a phone call to the office on Monday, just to check and see if it's being taken care of. Just say you're double checking since you have a tight deadline of the 11th.

I got an email reply within minutes when I sent to Dean Hoye. Also got my scholarship bumped up (so it's worth trying).

Also, does anyone know when the seat deposit / deadline to accept financial aid is?

How long did it take for them to raise your scholarship after you sent the email and what date did that happen?. I got the response that their committee wouldn't handle appeals until early/miid April.
I guess it is early April already. I sent in the request about two or three weeks ago, which they acknowledged immediately, and then I got the response earlier this week. I had a T6 offer much stronger than Duke's to negotiate with though.

Would ya'll mind editing these? I'm 100% sold on Duke but fear that I've said too much.

Is April 11th just the deposit deadline for summer starters? I thought I had read that the deposit deadline for the fall was April 25th.

Duke defeated UVA in the National Law School Softball Invitational (--LinkRemoved-- http://abovethelaw.com/2014/04/morning-docket-04-07-14/) this past weekend if that helps haha.

Also, Duke is ranked as #1 Quality of Life (http://www.princetonreview.com/schools/ ... id=1035810) and will continue to move up the rankings as their employment statistics surpass UVA (http://abovethelaw.com/careers/law-school-rankings/).

In all seriousness, the biggest difference is class size. Both are great schools and congratulations on your acceptance! We hope to have you all in the fall!

I went to Duke ASW, and couldn't make UVA's but visited on my own and stayed with current students and attended a class. I liked Duke better, but a large part of that for me was smaller class size.

For those of you who have received actual responses (i.e. yes/no) to your scholarship reconsideration emails, how long did it take on average?

It took me about 12-14 days

Oh okay, I feel better now. I was getting antsy. I didn't send to Hoye, so I haven't received a confirmation yet, which had me feeling uneasy, but I'm sure they received it.

When did you submit your request LS22? I've submitted negotiation requests to 5 or 6 different schools and have received a confirmation of receipt from all of them within 3 days, max. Most have responded either that day or the next business day. If you haven't received a confirmation and it's been more than a week or so I might consider calling to make sure it didn't get forwarded to the wrong person.

Sorry if this has already been discussed earlier, but is there a roommate database somewhere? I heard at ASW that there was some sort of roommate finder/matchmaker list for previous classes to use where you can input your desired location and see if anyone is interested in sharing an apartment. I believe they said it was through the Facebook group, but I couldn't find a 2017 Facebook group. Thanks for the help!
