:p

While this is fresh in my mind - there was someone earlier looking for info on the townhomes at arlington park. I can't remember if it was here or on the applicants thread, but if you're still reading I have some new info. So PM if you want it.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Gryffindor needs a little representation, so I think it will be fine . All the houses are great though.

Very strange. I submitted right at midnight but I didn't get a wait list number today. Anyone else in the same situation?

Does anyone have any insight into the scholarship process?

-Timelines for hearing about them (for the earliest admits)
-Is UVA considered generous/stingy
-Does UVA match other offers? If so, which schools do they match?

Between February and April most likely (could be as early as mid-January). They don't dish out a ton of cash, but your full application comes more into play at scholarship decision time, because you're competing with individuals who have more similar stats to you. Probably somewhere in between generous and stingy. If you're competitive enough, they may give you a little more to accept admission, but probably not too much more than what was originally offered.

Jenny, don't worry, you're not alone in Gryffindor house. We can represent together ;)

It's going to be really interesting seeing who else ends up in this thread, considering the wave of WL's that just happened. I'm really surprised by some of those numbers that were passed up, definitely puts the Cycle into perspective.

RCO, maybe Sunday? Does anyone else have any suggestions for a chat day?

This is a little old and it looks like it is geared towards LDS applicants but here is a pretty interesting guide to housing around UVA I found the other day. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6F0BNX ... hhb1k/edit

Thanks! Could you comment on how many students live in walking distance of the school as opposed to those who drive? Assuming one has a car are there any other disadvantages/advantages of driving other than proximity.

Specifically, what is your opinion (walk/drive) for 1L? Which would you recommend?

Thanks again.

It seems that there are a lot of people who do either. A lot of 1L's live in Jeffersonian or Ivy Gardens. If you live in one of these places, you aren't eligible to buy a parking pass. The walk from Ivy is about 10-12 minutes, but maybe slightly more if you live in a building far from the sidewalk that takes you from Ivy Gardens to Massie Road. It's not a long walk, but keep in mind that it gets colder in Charlottesville during late fall and the winter months. I imagine Jeffersonian is a 2-3 minute walk. One of the advantages of driving is being able to easily go off campus for lunch, though there is a cafeteria in the law school with a reasonably-priced deli that I have been happy with.

As someone who has lived at Ivy for 1.5 years, I would much prefer driving to walking. While you can rent a locker at the law school, there will be times when you'll have to make that 10-12 walk to Ivy having to transport heavy books and your laptop. It's not that bad, but I would drive if I had the option.

The advantage to Ivy is that it's really close to North Grounds Gym, it has a few swimming pools, and it is very social (though the walls are thin if your neighbors have any parties). I have had some problems with Ivy and am looking to move somewhere else for my 3L year. More specifically, the only TV/internet provider (access media 3) that can be used with Ivy has been a headache. During my 1L year, the Internet would shut down constantly, and Access Media 3 customer service was very unhelpful. Though, it has significantly improved this year and works fine now.

I'll say this: Pavilion/Jeffersonian/Arlington has an additional advantage to Ivy. Really short walk to the LS, obviously, but also a really short walk to Harris Teeter/Chipotle/McDs/Liquor Store. If I lived in Ivy groceries would be a huge pain.

If I could do it over, I'd probably still live where I do, but there are some advantages to living further away from campus. I really hate being around the law school around exam time... there's just this kind of stress miasma that is hanging in the air, and a stuffed dog with an animal law casebook isn't going to change that. It's fine during most of the semester, but get the fuck away from law students as much as possible around exams.

Edit: I'll answer any questions too, for the record. Ain't got shit to do until classes start back.

Did you live in either Ivy or Pav? If you did, do you think you could compare those two options directly?

Not going to say where I live exactly, but I live on Arlington - not at the Ivy. Ivy is probably a fifteen/twenty minute walk to HT, which is just on the edge of okay, and the walk back is up a shitty hill. With Pavilion you're paying a lot more, but the location is pretty sweet if you didn't get into the Jeffersonian or any of the other apartments on Arlington. Ivy is just kind of... tucked away. Plenty of people live there, it has it's drawbacks - but other than distance it's drawbacks are pretty much identical to Pavilion (basically a dorm-like atmosphere), and it's going to be dependent on the person how big a deal those drawbacks are. Ivy is a decent choice, and if you end up there you probably won't regret it much, but the only real advantage is I can wake up five minutes before class and still make it, while someone at the Ivy has to wake up five minutes earlier. A lot of it is splitting hairs.

I mean it's not a closet or anything, but it's definitely not big enough to fit the things I normally associate with a den (couch, recliner, TV). I haven't seen the inside of the apartments in person, so maybe it's actually big enough for a den/office/guest room, but it just sounds so small to me on paper (this is mainly because I'm imagining reaching outwards and touching both walls easily).

Haven't been in one, but I can scope around and see what they look like.

One of my friends in college had a room like that in his house, and it actually made a perfect media room because the walls forced us to focus on the tv. Couch the width of the room on one end, giant TV on the other, and a coffee table in the middle. Worked well. I'm hoping to put a crib and changing station in there and make a little bedroom for my 1 y/o, but he'll only be in there to sleep/nap so it's not like he'll need lots of space.

I'm sure if you put your mind to it you could come up with something cool to use it for
