Yo, tough game this morning, Gooner.
I feel like Liverpool is gonna do the same thing to my poor Spurs tomorrow.

Ya Liverpool has been playing very well it might get rough for you guys. Spurs have been playing better lately and Gerrard is out though so you might have a shot. Will be a good one.

+1 to Jake Bugg. I've glanced over the FB page.eliminatorjr wrote:RCO, I totally dig that Jake Bugg album.
Anyone take a look at the accepted students Facebook group? I feel like everyone is better looking and better qualified than me.

Re: UVA Class of 2017
I'm a 2L at UVA right now. Congrats to the admits!
I will provide a dissenting voice on living within walking distance. I am not within walking distance (I'm in an apartment complex on Rugby Road, which is an undergrad area ). As long as your apartment/house has off-street parking, I think driving is really reasonable. My drive is about 8 minutes and I'm paying significantly less living farther away. The parking permits for the law school are a bit expensive but not prohibitively so, and I've never had trouble finding a spot at school.
For those who are looking for housing (apartments or houses),this site is by far the best way to navigate the search in my opinion. http://www.brac.com
If you're using that site, the areas you would want to check out to be within either walking or close driving (less than 10 minutes) would be North Grounds (these would be walking distance or maybe up to a 5 minute drive), Rugby Road/Corner (beware: you trade off living in buildings with undergrads for close proximity to bars), and Jefferson Park Avenue (probably about a 10 minute drive most days, but there is a lot of selection over there).
And as was mentioned by someone else, it's finals time right now for us, so more people will chime in in the coming weeks.

Thanks! Appreciate a different POV. Good to hear all sides. Best of luck on finals, you're almost done!

Thanks for the heads up!Br3v wrote:I think the class size is only like 298? I could be wrong.SicSemperTyrannis wrote:On that point, could you describe from your viewpoint how the social life is? You'll miss out on a cool notebook, a t-shirt, and one of those drawstring backpacks, though. You do get to meet some interesting people, as well, but that'll mostly consist of the same "so where did you go to undergrad???" convo that you'll have 1,000,000 other times the first few weeks of 1L.
Don't worry about it if you have to miss it, but also don't miss it if you don't have to.
Also, it seems like with 350 people per class UVA is on the line between a very large class size and a small class size - do you feel like you've been able to get to know a large proportion of your 1L classmates? How about 2L's and 3L's?
Lastly, is there any separation by region going on? I feel like UVA is one of the few schools which truly brings in a 'national' crowd in significant numbers and am wondering about the dynamics of that.
Just realized that was a lot of questions but I'd appreciate any insights. I was accepted ED just recently and am incredibly excited to be attending next Fall.
Your social life is pretty much just your section and on random weekends when you get paired up with other sections. TO be honest though, and I dont want this to be too much of a let down, but its not like you are goint to have a lot of free time anyways.
Yeah plenty of people have fun and its not non-stop studying, but there isn't exactly a lot of time to socialize outside of your section anyways.

In practice it'll be a little smaller. I know a few people who dropped out the first few weeks - might even be a few more. I know the section sizes were smaller by a few this year too, but I don't know what that means for the next class.RCO2012 wrote:The 1L class of 2016 is 330 according to UVA.

Is it really that difficult to bike around UVA?First Offense wrote: Biking around the law school is suicide. Traffic is awful, it's hills everywhere, and people in Cville can't fucking drive. Do not plan on biking.
Edit: For the record, I came from a large-ish city with pretty bad traffic, and somehow it's actually worse here in Charlottesville. I cannot explain it. It defies logic, but this place has the worst freaking traffic. If you're planning on living around the Corner area, though, you'll be able to catch the bus no problem, and I guess during non-rush hours biking will be possible.
If you're going to live down 29 though, don't even think of biking. I don't even like going down that road in a car, much less on a bike.

Re: UVA Class of 2017
Some people do it, but I can't think of more than a handful. If you live down 29, seriously don't even think about it. Traffic is nuts and drivers are bad. If you live around the Corner or toward main grounds it is less of a death wish, but at the same time you could just take the shuttle. Also, apartments right by the law school are pretty cheap (Pavilion notwithstanding), so living further away doesn't make a ton of sense. The few people that do live further out that I know of either drive or take the shuttle, but there are always a couple of bikes at the bike rack, so through my powers of deduction I concluded that at least a couple of people bike.meegee wrote:Is it really that difficult to bike around UVA?First Offense wrote: Biking around the law school is suicide. Re: UVA Class of 2017
From what I saw, main grounds isn't terrible. However, the streets are pretty small with quite a few cars, I didn't see any bike lanes, and there are quite a few people walking on the sidewalks. So, I can imagine it'd be hard to navigate and 1) not hit a person on the sidewalk, and 2) not get ran over by a car if you're on the side of the street (especially at night). Like the above poster said the main road isn't really made for biking. If you live on or past Hydraulic you'll need to cross a highway on/off ramp that meets at the main road with no crosswalk or anything similar. Also, from what I remember, there isn't really a sidewalk or area for a bike on the main road. You would most likely want to take the trail, but after walking the trail, I imagine it'd be quite difficult to bike through.meegee wrote:Is it really that difficult to bike around UVA?First Offense wrote: Biking around the law school is suicide. The whole Charlottesville traffic thing is an exaggeration imo.
Stay off 29 during like 5 - 6 pm.
Besides that your only other problem is when a concert comes to town (like a dozen a year) or when a baseketball game gets out, and again those only create a problem on 29.

Also, I have actually never seen the parking people. Not to say they dont patrol the law school parking lot but I get the feeling they spend most of their time on main grounds where parking is more of a problem

Counterpoint: After I moved to C-ville and a couple weeks before class started, I drove up to the law school, parked, and walked around to get excited and stuff. I was the only person there.
Came back to a $40 parking ticket on my car, the only one in the parking lot. Still pissed.

Re: UVA Class of 2017
I was freaking out about this when I went to visit. Of course, it seems that all visitor spots are constantly occupied every time I've been there (even during Thanksgiving break), so I asked admissions where to park hoping my car would not be towed while I was inside asking. I had to park all the way in the back around the curved road where they said to while visiting (also locked my steering wheel to help prevent towing haha). No ticket though, so hope I can avoid that. Do you know how many motorcycle parking spots are at the school (would getting a pass for one be worth it for a moped)? I'm torn between just getting a parking pass and hoping to get one at the LS (it's lottery right?) or getting a motorcycle pass for a moped. In the end, all of my problems would be solved if I could find a place within walking distance.North wrote:Counterpoint: After I moved to C-ville and a couple weeks before class started, I drove up to the law school, parked, and walked around to get excited and stuff.
