I could only target one major market city for personal reasons and was having no luck. I gave up on big law after getting what seems like a couple dozen rejections and focused on smaller places. Got an offer a couple of weeks ago from a boutique firm that I really like. The pay is far less than I want and expected, but I think I'm going to take it because the experience seems incredible.

I'm kind of disappointed but I think my expectations were a little unrealistic.

how much lower is the salary? Below 6 figures? Also how hard was it to get the boutique offer? Did you feel like ur clerkship ensured it, or did they just need someone and didn't care about ur clerking experience?

Considering just staying on for another year with my clerkship upon judge's request. I am guessing the radio silence from firms to which I applied back in January means they're not interested.

I thought that too, for some firms, but one emailed to ask if I was still interested in interviewing. When do you need to let your judge know?

I have a callback in a major market. Would it be untoward of me to email recruiters at firms that I have applied to (that do have open postings), but have heard nothing from, to let them know I'll be in town?

I know it's okay to do this with judges, but will firms think this is ridiculous/obnoxious?

It usually doesn't translate to any extra interviews, but it's totally fine to do. I've done it a few times already.

I'm not the anon who replied, but I did this in a major market and it translated into an interview. Definitely worth a try.

Any advice for wording the request? I really want to avoid sounding entitled!

Don't overthink it. Just something simple like:

Dear [recruiting coordinator],

My name is xyx and I am a current law clerk to the Honorable xyz on the xyz district/circuit. I had previously applied to [firm name] for an associate position upon the conclusion of my clerkship in the fall. I am writing to let you know that I am going to be in town next week on [dates]. Should you be interested in having me for an interview, I would welcome the opportunity.

Thanks in advance,
xyz

Beautiful. Thank you. (Sorry if I botched the quoting above.)

I believe it was DC before. If so, the answer is no.

Any updates this week? I keep checking the firm hiring pages for new openings, but they seem slim.

Anyone else getting sworn in for no good reason in D.C. next week? I spent the money already (in a more optimistic time) so I figure I might as well go through with it.
