My sense is that the Judge (and to some degree the district/circuit) affect how much you like the job much more than "clerking" generically. My district and circuit experiences were night and day because of how different the judges were and the difference between being "in court" every day and having oral arguments only once a month. They also seem to attract different co-clerks, so even that varies to a degree as well (less and less so these days, though).
