Where'd you get this? I'm nearly certain it is incorrect.

Not OP. I believe he is still making offers, but no longer extending additional interview requests.

I'm still waiting to hear back from a judge I interviewed with at the end of June for a 2017-18 position. The judge said I would hear back within 30 days, and it's been just about half that time now. (I was the first interview for the term, and the judge planned to complete 5-10 interviews before making decisions). Is it appropriate to mail a letter reaffirming interest? Or is that too pushy, given that the initial decision time has yet to expire? Thanks!

The judge knows you want to clerk for them, and gave you a specific time line. You might rub someone the wrong way/come across as pushy for emailing barely halfway until that time line ends.

Yea I was about 50/50 on it, I'll probably hold off then. Thanks.

Yeah, that sounds right. But that's not the same as being full. I'd imagine some of the folks he's interviewing won't pan out or will wind up somewhere else, so it's possible he'd extend more offers to interview down the road.

Anyone know if Pillard, Harris, or Moss have started interviewing for 17-18?

Does anyone know whether to expect on-the-spot offers from feeder judges? (DC Cir. specifically)

This. He is definitely not "full" in the usual sense.

In two of the last three years, he has also saved one spot and filled it 6-12 months later, in order to not unduly favor the early movers.

Both Pillard and Harris interviewed for 17-18 last summer.

Hearing rumors that Srinivasan hired rising 2Ls for 2018-19. Are Garland and Kavanaugh doing the same?

Kavanaugh 100% is doing the same thing (at least for a couple of slots). Haven't heard about Garland.

I don't know anything about what they're doing this year, but this has been Kavanaugh's general practice more or less since the breakdown of the Plan. It has not been Garland's practice, and I doubt he will do it this year.

Srinivasan has definitely hired at least one rising 2L for 2018.

Yeah, I don't know anything about what he has done this year, but I know he did this last year (i.e., hired several rising 2Ls "ahead" for the following year). If he did it last year, it stands to reason he would do it this year -- otherwise, he'd only have two (or so) spots to fill.

median-ish rising 2L at CLS (3.3)-- should i just give up hope of clerking, or are there things I can do to mitigate my awful grades and have some sort of shot?

I'll be on a secondary journal and have great pre-law school work experience (if that matters). I'm also a quite good writer, but i'm guessing that won't matter given my grades. super flexible geographically, but have a very liberal resume, which I'd think hurts me in some of the less competitive areas. Any advice, or should i just accept that 20 hours of tests during 1L = a mediocre legal future?

There's still time to fix things up. Try to get a note (or two) published with your journal. Gun for editorial board, even EIC. Get close to a few professors and become an RA. And though it probably goes without saying, work really hard on your classes for the next two semesters. (A lot of your peers will let off the gas in 2L, so take full advantage.) If you can pull yourself to a 3.6 by the end of the year, you'll be in an ok spot.

Apply next spring anyway, regardless of where you stand. Judges are unpredicatble, and many people have gotten clerkships with average grades.

Also think about applying as an alum. Some judges give more weight to real WE than to a median GPA.

Which feeders have HLS students accepted clerkships with? So far I have heard of Sutton, Gorsuch and Srinivasan, but that's it.

Thank you so much-- this is super helpful, and definitely makes me feel a lot better about everything : )

Sutton has hired three for 2017-2018. Millett is interviewing for 2018-2019. And Srinivasan has definitely hired a rising 2L for 2018-19. Moss is also interviewing for 2017-18.

Millett isn't a feeder, but I will add to this that she has hired at least one rising HLS 2L for 2018.

Moss is a district judge. Millett has never sent a clerk to the Court.

Gorsuch has hired two HLS 2017.

Have not heard of any hires besides Sutton, Srinivasan or Gorsuch. Seems like HLS isn't doing great this year anecdotally.

Reinhardt hired one.
