There have been rumors for a while that he's considering taking senior status--maybe this is a signal?

Any further news about this?

I know he's made some hires for 2015-2016, so he must not be stepping down before then.

I can confirm several Tatel hires for 2015-16.

From what I've heard, Tatel is already full through '16-'17, but it's second hand.

Anyone know if the new judges are taking 2016 apps yet?

If anyone has info on a few of the senior judges (Williams, Edwards, Randolph, etc), then could you PM. Looking for anything related to what they look for in applicants, HYS professors they might lean on, etc.

Same responder as above - I haven't heard anything. Anybody else out there? Since his OSCAR page says he'll be interviewing April 23-25, I'd think he would have already reached out to people.

Haven't commented on this yet, but I'm also curious as to this. I haven't heard from anyone in my network regarding him selecting interviewees. It's surprising in that I feel many people I know would likely be excellent candidates or know candidates that would get an interview. Maybe he's just highly idiosyncratic in his hiring practices so that the standard criteria may not be as important to him.

He said in his post, I believe, that he was taking 3 for 2014 and 3 for 2015, so 6 spots total. I would think he would want to interview ~20 candidates. I really thought someone on here would have heard from him, or known someone who has.

As a district court judge, Wilkins had a reputation for hiring only (or at least primarily) applicants with several years of work experience--not even the typical candidate who's clerked somewhere else beforehand, but candidates who had actually spent 3-4 years as law-firm associates (or whatever). It seems possible he's still looking for people who fit that profile.

I just noticed this on OSCAR, but has Judge Pillard not hired for 2015-16? She has 14-15 as "filled."

I know of at least one hire. Not sure if she's filled.

She still has two slots for 2015-16 from what I understand.

The OSCAR posting says she has two openings for 2014. Strange that those positions seemed to have been filled a few months back and are now open again.

I saw that this morning. I'm curious as to whether the general consensus is that I'd be wasting my time by sending in an application (my guess is yes because of the grades and the supercompetitive circuit). Here's me:

Top 20% or so from a CCN (not even close to top 10%).
Clerked for a well-respected USDC judge in a major market. He'd write a letter and take calls but probably not call himself.
Several years of practice experience, including government practice where I was lead counsel in a bunch of big cases.
Currently seniorish associate with a biglaw satellite office in a flyover city (where we live for my spouse's job).
Several publications (5+), including LR articles cited by a federal COA and a SSC.

The really long story short is that (i) family circumstances mean that a one year relocation in 2014-15 is very doable, (2) my current employer would probably let me go off for a year for a COA clerkship, and (3) I'd ultimately like to try to go into academia if/once the current hiring quasi-freeze is lifted, and the lack of a COA clerkship is a black mark on my CV.

Your grades are definitely below what's "normal" from a CCN, but your USDC judge letter + law review articles + practice experience could make you competitive. Plus, if you have any big name recommenders from your CCN school (perhaps one that knows Pillard personally), that could get you the interview.

Thanks! You've convinced me that it may be highly unlikely, but it's not a waste of a few hours putting something together.

Another quick question: The reason that a temporary relocation in 2014-15 is feasible is that my spouse has one of those careers where s/he gets to take off for a full year for a sabbatical/fellowship/grant every five years or so. That year off is coming up this fall. Mention something in the cover letter, or TMI?

Anybody know anybody who's landed an interview for these newly-available 2014-15 positions?
