The past summer, I worked in a secondary market and had the chance to have lunch with a federal district judge. At the end of the lunch he gave me his business card and said to let him know if I was ever back in the area (or something to that effect, I'm paraphrasing).

What do you guys think about reaching out directly to him to express interest and asking whether he's still on the plan? We went to the same undergrad, fwiw.

If he gave you his business card then I think you have the greenlight to email him.

I would go for it. He would not have given you a business card and told you to contact him if he didn't want you to. Obviously be professional in the email but I definitely think you should. Good luck!

Just pulled out the business card... looks like he gave me the one with just his phone number on it.
Not sure why it makes a difference, but I feel a little less comfortable giving him a call.

Should I just call chambers like I'd do with any other Judge? Seems like I'm abdicating an advantage in a way..

You should just call the chambers number.

If you're calling him to find out when he takes applications or to let him know you plan to apply, you should just talk to chambers. His clerks or JA can tell you when he takes applications, etc.

If you're calling him because you are legitimately going to be back in the area and wanted to stop by or get lunch (i.e., the reasons that he instructed you to call him), then ask to speak to the judge.

Finally, you can include a single sentence in your cover letter that reference your meeting the judge.
