I interviewed with a judge on 6/28 and never received a rejection letter (I interviewed with a different judge and did receive a rejection letter--making me an excellent 0/2). I know for a fact that this particular judge has filled the position. Honestly, I don't think less competitive means anything these days. That sucks man. Sometimes its really not about fairness or qualifications- I feel incredibly blessed to have landed mine, and I have no delusions I'd have gotten this one if my judge didn't always hire one clerk from my school. True indeed. I'm not even in top 14 or top 20% of my class, no LR. Just got one interview, which took. It really is about qualifications and a whole lot of luck. Don't take it to mean that you're not a good lawyer or student.Anonymous User wrote:That sucks man. I got an offer from a USDC judge in Florida back in January. Several have been moving for awhile now. Like others have said, oftentimes its still several hundred applicants for one or two positions. I mean, my stats aren't incredible though. I think my judge just liked some idiosyncratic things about my application. False. Absolutely no harm in following up with a note to ask whether the judge has completed hiring. I agree. A month is long enough to wait before following up. If it was the very next day, or even the next week, that might be another thing. I would just preface your email with something like, "I recognize that you may be very busy and also that the judge takes his/her time reviewing applications, but I wanted to inquire..."Anonymous User wrote:False. This is clearly not a situation where someone's turned in an app through normal channels. The OP has a connection in chambers. There is no harm following up to ask merely whether hiring is still on. Nobody is saying, "Hey guys, remember me? I really want this. Want to get back to me now?" The clerk can say, "yup, we're still hiring" or "no, we're done." That information can also be gained pretty easily by picking up a phone and calling chambers. You won't even have to tell them your name if you're really THAT worried.hopkins23 wrote:I look at it this way, as a cost-benefit analysis. What is the benefit of emailing chambers? If you don't email them, your app may be in the running, or it may not be. You just don't know. Either way, don't worry about it, move on, and keep applying for clerkships. Choosing this option, you won't run the risk of pissing off anyone in chambers.
And, in my opinion, I don't think you'll get any brownie points if you call and ask about your app. They're not going to say, "Ohh, this guy really wants the job and took initiative." Maybe I'm wrong on this point, but I don't see judges acting that way.
Bottom line: I always just like submitting my app and letting it speak for itself. If they call me, they do; if they don't, they don't. After I submit my app to you, it's on you to contact me back. I'm not going out of my way to seem desperate and call you again.
If it makes you feel any better, I was in a situation where I had already interviewed for a CoA position and the Judge had told me to expect to hear back within three weeks. After over a month of waiting, I called in to check on the Judge's hiring status and was told the Judge was taking a little more time to decide.
