Re: 2014/2015 Clerkship Application Thread

I wish my school knew about clerkships so I wouldn't have to beg for simple info like that on TLS

I have a bit of an odd request. One of the professors who is recommending me has given me a copy of the letter he'll be sending and asked if there are any changes/additions I would like made. For reasons I'd rather not say for outing concerns, he isn't very familiar with the clerkship process. Accordingly, he isn't quite sure of the best things to say, and neither am I. Would anyone in here (particularly current or former clerks who have looked at hundreds of these letters) mind PMing me to take a look and offer suggestions?

Thanks so much.

That's how the whole clerkship process feels at my T20. Our clerkship advisor makes sure to comment that "this isn't Harvard" on a regular basis.

+1

It's like, yeah, my expectations are sufficiently low. Now tell me what you *can* do for me.

You're right that she's not a feeder -- I don't think any of her clerks have gone to SCOTUS before. However, I also don't think it's location (at least not primarily). There are plenty of circuit judges in big, nice cities -- Flaum and Rovner are also in Chicago, for example. I think a Wood clerkship is so competitive simply because she has a reputation for being one of the active leading liberal jurists. I'm sure the SCOTUS consideration added to her desirability, but I'm also sure she was extremely competitive before Obama put her on the short list.

Should I indicate on my mailing address that it is a clerkship application or just mailing address?

This. And elaborating a little, she's also very connected with U. Chicago. My understanding is that she kind of gets first crack at the best non-conservative/libertarian students from there (sort of like a bizarro Easterbrook).

Plus, from all accounts, she's incredibly nice, and a lot of people think that she's the best writer on the bench today. (I actually prefer Posner -- still -- but I think I'm in a minority.)

Does a judge making their 2014 application active on February 6 mean that they're actively seeking applications at this point? Or is it still generally preferable to wait until April?

That would mean they updated something on their OSCAR profile today. If their page is active and they're accepting applications, I wouldn't advise waiting until April. You won't have more grades in April or anything...why wait?

Thoughts on where I'd be competitive?

I'm not sure where he hired from, but he's been done since last week.

Is it fair to assume to most district courts, including competitive ones like NYC and Boston, won't be in play until the later spring if not summer? SInce I never planned on applying to most competitive East Coast circuit courts is it cool that I am chilling out for now (though I have at least spoken to profs)?

No, that's not a safe assumption. It's still unclear exactly how far reaching the DC Circuit announcement is going to reach, but it's entirely possible if not probable that competitive district court judges are going to move a lot sooner than the summer. At the very least, I'd be watching out for them on OSCAR and/or calling chambers. And I'd be getting my stuff together right now.

Ellis from EDVA is apparently taking applications... but he only takes the best, so take that for what it's worth.

Jeez. HLS's grades have only been out for a week and a half. Plus snail mail transit time. Boo.

Further proof that someone out there is always working harder than you . . . .

Not that I had a shot at Wilkinson, anyway.

It isn't -- he may still hire for 2015. He hired at least one 3L for 2014, which suggests he isn't done with 2Ls for good.

Fairly certain he's full for 2014, 2Ls included (he hired at least one from my school). Regardless, you're not going to get hired by Wilkinson by blindly mailing an app, even if you're #1 at Yale. He hires through networks. This is true of many feeders.

Right, I obviously wasn't suggesting that mailing without a few good phone calls is the way to go. The point is simply that he doesn't hire 4 2Ls every year to start right after graduation and call it a day. I know multiple people who have been hired in the last few years by Wilkinson for a year out. He's full for 2014; I'm talking about 2015.

Whoever posted this, where's your info coming from? Where you assuming from the fact that he removed the clerkship position on OSCAR that he had finished hiring? Because he just posted a new vacancy for 2014.
