Top 10%, biglaw...what next?

Post by BrooklynLaw16 » Fri Jan 30, 2015 1:59 am

TLS has served as a guide since my early LSAT days, propelling me to choose a full ride at BLS, to achieve top grades, and to succeed in OCI. Now I'm top 10%, I have a biglaw summer associate position lined up, and 2L classes are a joke. The question: What next? Is there anything that you did during your 2L and 3L year that helped to define who you are as a lawyer? Is there anything that you wish you would have done during these final years of law school?

Keep being a gunner and go for Law Review Ed Board and clerkship, or just enjoy life outside of law school.

Is law review ed board really worth the resume boost? I heard it's a shit ton of work. I served my time as a hermit during 1L.

Same question for clerkship. They're obviously useful if you don't have an offer, as a way to get biglaw without a summer associate. But is it wise to defer biglaw for a year in order to do a clerkship?

you keep your grades up so you don't get no offered

you work hard this summer to get an offer

you study hard for the bar so you don't fail

you work hard at work so you don't get fired

you grind away at biglaw even though you hate it

you live like a monk and put every dollar towards your loans just you escape the hell of biglaw a little bit sooner

years later you finally make that last loan payment

net worth: $0. just like the day you were born

and then you kill yourself

on balance, in balance

LMAO

I shouldn't be laughing because this is reality for some people. But I don't have any loans, I'm on a full scholly and living like a peasant. Please write another poetic verse with that in mind

minimum debt here. I'll probably save 200k, move to a country in south america with no coke problem and retire at 32.

So just to summarize the ideas that have been proposed so far:
1. Run for LR Editor
2. Clerkship
3. Enjoy life outside of law school
4. Get an offer from biglaw
5. Commerce a cocaine market in a South American country
6. Commit suicide

Very insightful. In terms of getting the offer from biglaw, do they really care about your upperclass grades? I was under the impression that they judge you entirely based on your work over the summer.

You should definitely not do E board or clerkship gunning. Some people need or want that prestige, but you sound more like I was. If you're not drawn to the inherent benefits of clerking, then no, it's not worth the hard work or the pay cut.

Your 2L and 3L classes don't matter either, nor do they define who you become as a lawyer. Your firm also will not care what classes you take. Select classes based on which professors are easiest, which classes are uncurved, what time the classes meet (target 4-day weekends), and which classes have the hottest girls.
