Seems as though no one is owning up to applying. If this is a reflection of less people applying, the odds are in your favor :-)

They gave us the who worked where list for this summer, and since it is relevant to your interests...
(I do not certify any of this, it is based on my glancing at it quickly, there could be slight variance)

46/183 (25%) of 1Ls have firm jobs, the vast majority of which are market paying, but I can't certify 100%

193/238 (81%) of 2Ls are at firms, I won't even begin to decide whether they are market paying but again the vast majority is a safe assumption. Full disclosure, there might be people who are splitting that are counted twice, so that number might be deviate a little (either upward - I see at least one split between firm/judge, or downward - people doing 2 firms). 49 of these are at V10s, 101 at V30s.

Of those that are not at firms:
3/238 (1.3%) corporate
16/238 (6.7%) government
1/238 (.4%) judge
1/238 (.4%) non-law
23/238 (9.6%) public interest

I'm missing one person somewhere idc.

Of the 45 not at firms, some did not do OCI, I do not know how many, but it is some. The corporate jobs appear legit, and surely some of the public interest jobs were competitive, or what the people targeted. That being said, some of those 45 struck out and I have no way to estimate what portion of them are dissatisfied with their results.

So a conservative percentage of successful outcomes is 80-83%, an ambitious estimate might get close to 95%.

All things considered, I'd say U.Chi killed it on the jerbs this year, you all should be optimistic.

If there is any specific info I can get for anyone let me know and I'll do so subject to my discretion on if I think it shouldn't be public knowledge. Feel free to PM me if you'd rather.

So I'm looking at the Awards section of the my.uchicago page, and the loans they awarded me don't add up to the COA (already accounted for scholarship). Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks for posting this. Very, very helpful. If you don't mind, would you post the breakdown of 1L non-firm jobs?

Yes. If you contact them and ask for an increase they will do so by dispursing more funds via Grad Plus. Just make sure you have your id # handy when asking. They are incredibly informative and friendly!

I did this pretty quickly, so no guarantees it's right:

46 Firms
41 Public Interest
38 Government (26 Federal, 8 State, 3 City, 1 Foreign)
24 Research Assistant
19 Judicial Internship
19 Clinics
9 Corporate/Business

These numbers include split summers as separate jobs (a lot of the research assistants are doubled up, for example).

Realized today that I haven't submitted my "DL MPN Stafford" form on the financial aid site. What exactly is it? The link just takes me to the general Federal Student Loan site. I've done counseling, but should I have already signed the promissory stuff by now? Whoops.

Edit: realized that the MPN is the promissory note. Should that have been done by May 31st? I had all my other stuff in. All this stuff stresses me out and depresses me.

Nah you will be fine.

They admit people after May 31st, so necessarily that is a soft deadline.

They said not to do these until July. They execute a credit check after you submit them and they want the credit check at most two months prior to starting school.

Perfect. Where did you see that at?

It's actually 3 months prior. So I think we can apply as of a few days ago. But not to worry if you haven't yet.
IMPORTANT: Because the credit check on this loan is only good for 90 days, we ask that you not complete the application and promissory note for the GradPLUS loan prior to June 15, 2013. This will allow SLA ample time to confirm your loan eligibility within that 90-day window.

Hi everyone. I'm in off the waitlist and will be attending next year. I'm glad to be joining such a great group.

We're winning the banner war, btw. P remarkable given our class size.

Hey everyone! I'm a little late to the party, but I'm excited to be at Chicago this fall! Two housing questions:

1) How do you get the Regents discount and how much is ti?
2) Is anyone here planning on doing grad school housing and knows what buildings/areas are safe and good quality? I'm bringing an SO, so I'm looking for at least a 1BR in either case.

Regents discount is $100 off, free internet, and free gym membership, or at least that's what it was last year.

No specific experience with grad housing, but if you want a rundown of how good any particular location is, PM me or post a list here. In general you want to be north and/or east, but specific streets can be way more convenient than others.

I'd also strongly recommend looking at TLC Management for a 1BR.

Look at the 2 if you're gong to be near a bus stop. It only runs during morning/evening rush hour, but it is an express to Hyde Park and goes right passed the law school

+1. The 2 is boss if you're commuting to or from Hyde Park. There's also the 28 (only goes downtown during rush) and the 6 (until like 2am).

The walk from the 59th metra stop is also longer than you think. And metra is kind of strange since it doesn't connect to anything - you'd probably end up getting a monthly zone A -> zone B for about 85$, but that will only work for metra. Getting a monthly CTA is like 100$ or something, and that'll give you access to the rest of the CTA as well. I've lived in Hyde Park for six years and I don't think I've taken the metra a single time in the last four years.

eta: I could definitely see metra making sense if you're living like, right next to a stop. It has some benefits over the CTA in that it actually follows a schedule and is pretty quick getting into the loop. But if your travel time to the nearest metra stop and the nearest 2 stop are similar, the benefit of having a monthly CTA card instead of a monthly metra (as well as not having to walk ten blocks or whatever in the winter) would fall heavily in favor of the 2.

Hey guys, excited to be attending U of C with you all in the Fall. Just being paranoid here, but did you guys get some kind of confirmation after emailing your Glass Menagerie photo? I sent mine in about a week ago and never got any response. I'm thinking my picture got rejected and I'm gonna end up as a gargoyle
