Welcome to the world of cognitive dissonance.

By the way, are you still considering whether to even go to law school, or have you made up your mind? (Or is ASW going to be a deciding factor for you?)

Right now I'm probs leaning 1) not going 2) Vandy 3) ???

Idk how much influence ASW is gonna be able to have on me but I'm not gonna say it can't change my mind one way or another.

Do I have to be invited to the fb group or can I just join it? I'm not committed yet, but I'm 98% sure I'll end up at Chicago.

Does anybody have data on what 1Ls are doing during their summers? I know the "Uniquely U of C" packet had some info on qualifying positions for summer funding, but I'm curious whether any (or how many) 1Ls have secured SAs.

So top grades and a little bit of luck according to that chart. I wonder how many of those are in Chicago

Well, most of those are probably diversity positions.

It also depends on where you have ties, IP background, stuff like that. I don't know their exact grades, but a couple non-LR people had SAs in secondary markets where they grew up or went to school. I think another 2(?) got SAs in Chicago through 1L OCI (not diversity positions). I'd say it's hard but definitely not impossible.

Any precedent for FinAid decisions to be released early in the week instead of Thursday/Friday?

You can apply starting Dec. 1, and you generally mass mail (email) with your cover letter and resume and update with grades when you have them. Ask here for more information: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=140165

kappycaft1 wrote:Hey Dany, if you wouldn't mind, would you (or any of you other knowledgeable current law students) mind providing the low-down of how one even goes about applying for a 1L SA position? By this, I mean that students usually apply for their 2L SAs after they get their first year grades, so they are basically applying to these positions a year before they even start; accordingly, what does the timeline for 1L SAs look like, and how is the process different?

Thanks in advance for your insight.

At Chicago more than at other schools, grades really aren't a factor in 1L's SA gigs -- after all, you'll only have 15% of your total grades. The timeline--if you can call it that--is totally different than 2L, which is organized and clear in advance. Basically you start applying on 12/1 and then things just take their course. Some firms want grades before they make decisions (which you won't have till the end of Jan), others will give you CB's before that (I think TX is especially prone to do this). It's a total mess -- I knew people with CB's over winter break, and I had CB's as late as the end of February.

Diversity positions, IP positions, and small/mid-market/Texas positions are about 90% of the spots out there. The other 10% are by connections, hustling, and getting lucky at 1L OCI. As far as strategy, you have to tailor towards your strengths. Are you from a small market or Texas? Great, focus on that. If, like me, you're from a large market and not qualified for diversity positions, you have to apply widely and hope for the best. But it's unlikely to pan out. On the upside networking/applying to firms as a 1L, even if they're not hiring, at least lets you demonstrate your interest for 2L OCI.

I somehow missed this post. I am still considering what to do. When I talked with Kevin Petty a couple of months ago, he said that for spouses, it is like $7,500 a year or something ridiculous like that. That means that my $10,000-a-year scholarship would go completely towards health insurance. :x

I am hoping that he just quoted me the wrong numbers; any of you current students on here with spouses that know whether this is legit? Also, what are you current students doing as far as insurance goes? Are most of you on the University's plan?

He was about right:
http://studenthealth.uchicago.edu/page/ ... -2012-2013

Recall that Chicago just requires that you have insurance, it doesn't care where it comes from. My impression is that most of the younger unmarried students are still covered under their parents' plans (fulltime students get that up until 26 or something). I'm too old to qualify for that, so I went with the University plan. I shopped around a little before doing it, but didn't find a plan of similar quality (low deductible) for meaningfully cheaper.
