Graduate housing does vary significantly according to size and utilities included, though, so you should check that. Also it's worth checking whether the night shuttles (North/South/East/West) run near 53rd and Dorchester... if the 171 and 172 are going to be cancelled in August, as it would seem, these will be the only way to cut short your walk home. FWIW as of right now they only operate starting at 6pm and leave from the Reg.

Thanks for the info. That will probably be the lowest I've ever paid for a shared apartment...wow. I think I'm just starting to appreciate the COL differences. Assuming no night shuttle, do you think it would be safe to walk back to 53rd from the law school after 10 pm? I would basically be walking through campus, right?

Thanks again.

I walk home to 52nd (and pretty far west) late at night plenty, but I'm always scared I'll get mugged. Never have been, but I'm a big dude so that might be part of it. 53rd is off-campus; it's pretty bust itself until about woodlawn and further west, but walking to it from the law school will take you through some dark neighborhood streets.

This is all good to know - thanks. I might just go with Regents until I know what I'm doing.

I noticed in previous c/o threads on TLS that Chicago admissions held chats with admits. Are they doing that this year? I guess they are probably too busy with the interviews now...

They were online chats on Tuesdays I believe. I was admitted after they were all done but read the transcripts.

It was like one with the admissions and financial aid people, one with current students, one with a professor, one with a dean, one with scotus clerks, and one more I think.

Not sure if they are being done again this year, if I find out I'll poast it.

Looking for a summer sublet in Chicago (the city, NOT the suburbs). Thanks.

Hey guys - have there been any insights/anecdotes/whatever from current UChi students talking about how recent employment/OCI has gone for students? LST is great, but I would love to know how this year's 3Ls are lined up and how the 2Ls fared at OCI.

Also, I've read a lot about housing options, and it seems like the 3 general options are: 1) Hyde Park/south side 2) Regents 3) Lincoln Park/north side.

Which of these 3 do you think is best suited for a student who is bringing a wife and a 1-yr-old? My wife is really concerned about living in Hyde Park, so I think she is leaning Regents or the more expensive north side digs. Would appreciate any thoughts/insights!

Thanks!

Yoda I've got a kid too (1 1/2 years old), and I plan on living in HP (not regents). I know some others with kids who have lived in Hyde Park for years without issue. General consensus is don't go south of campus, and that the UChi graduate apartments are definitely worth looking into. Also, apparently there is a childcare center opening on campus this semester, which may or may not offer sliding-scale tuition for students (haven't been able to find that out)

Regents isn't really a separate category from Hyde Park. It's just one of many apartment options in the area around campus. If your wife is concerned about Hyde Park in general, Regents isn't some magical place that's better than all other apartment buildings.

That said, I've never felt unsafe in Hyde Park. I do take care to never walk anywhere at night and always take the shuttles or buses back to my apartment. I think it's pretty easy to stay safe and I actually really like Hyde Park. Additionally, while I can't speak to having a family in HP, 60%+ of UChicago professors (of the university as a whole, not just the law school) live in Hyde Park and a bunch have families, so I wouldn't be that concerned that it's a completely unsuitable place for a family.

If you do want to stay in Hyde Park, I'd just look for a place that's easily accessible from campus via the shuttles and buses, and also has good access to downtown. For example, there's a 6/28 bus stop right outside my front door, so if I come home from downtown later at night, I don't have to walk alone from the bus stop. Regents has a shuttle and a convenient bus stop as well.

Hope this helps and isn't too rambly!

Thank you all for the helpful responses!

@kappycaft1 - I am probably more serious about taking UChi over SLS/HLS than my wife is, but I am slowly helping her see what a great option it is. We probably will try to visit in March as opposed to during the ASW, only because that will give us more time to make a decision (we have to decide days after ASW ends). I am from the mid-west and have been to Chicago a handful of times, and so even though I'm not familiar with Hyde Park, I appreciate the city and all that it would have to offer. My wife has never been, hence why a visit in March to both the school and the surrounding area would be a good idea.

You will get instructions on the transcript thing later if it's not in already. I know you probably want to get it out of the way, but it's not due until like August so I'd sit tight for further instructions.

The menagerie is the little book that they probably sent you that has all of our pictures. You email them a (hopefully) presentable picture of yourself to a dedicated email specifically for it. Again, they might not have that email account set up yet though but if you want to prepare by having a picture taken or something go for it.

They will start to send monthly emails to future students that will ultimately have all of this stuff in it.

Also ASW schedule isn't finalized yet (but it's close). I assume it will go up on a page when it is.

Congrats, you guys. I won't be around for your 1L year, but looking forward to meeting you all at ASW.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you would be bummed if there isn't an official late-night event at ASW? There'll definitely be plenty of unofficial opportunities to go out drinking with current students and your future classmates (Bar Review is on Thursdays and there'll definitely be people up for going out on Friday) but it sounds like there might not be any official ASW events that go past 9:30p or something.

There is usually a reception on Thursday night and of course Wine Mess then dinner on Friday, but after that it might be just up to the folks who want to go out to do that (though I'm sure there'd be a bunch of current students that would want to show you a good time).

Having official events is not a big deal to me personally. Although now that I think about it, I think I put "I'm flexible and will go with the flow" on my ASW form for host preferences. Hopefully "go with the flow" Chicago-style doesn't mean "early bedtime" or "have intellectual discourse at home."

I would have preferred an official event so that I know which bar to go to. Otherwise it is what it is

If there is no official event I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding out where people are planning to go.
