Congrats on the scholarships and decisions for everyone :)

Just a reminder, if you have questions for current students about apartments, 1L, or anything else UChicago-related, this thread is a great resource. And feel free to PM any of us as well.

Just got bumped from 75K to 90K! Definitely was not expecting something that big given my numbers. I'm 99% sure I'll be putting a deposit down

Any current students have opinions on Scholar's Corner being so close to Metra? I'm pretty much sold on the building, but a little concerned about noise from the tracks. Thanks!

I can't imagine it being an issue. The metra doesn't run that often and I think it's less noisy than like, the L tracks. I live decently close to the Metra and have never really noticed it.

Not a current student, but I live in Scholar's. As Dany said, it's not really an issue. Occasionally if I have a window open the train will drown out dialogue from my Netflix, but it's never been loud enough to bother me when trying to sleep. I'm on the northwest corner, but on one of the higher floors - if you end up with one on 3-5, it could be more of an issue if you have a west-facing room. Ask Linda about the room orientation when you call. Or message me and I can give the lowdown.

Also, Scholar's is awesome; you won't be disappointed. Stupid name, great building.

I'm considering Scholar's Corner too. Can you please tell me if heat is included in the rent, and if not, whether the bill is ridiculous during winter? Also, what makes it a great building?:)

It's not, unfortunately. That's a definite downside. The heat is all electric, so it's not a separate heating bill; you just pay more to ComEd. I'm pretty liberal with it and I think the worst it got last winter was $100, which, keep in mind, is electric+heat.

I mostly like it because it's a lot of space for not a lot of money. It's also an older building with a lot of personality that nevertheless is really well-maintained; it falls nicely between places like Regents (that are well-kept but sterile, like a hotel) and the standard Hyde Park walkups that are super old and charming, but kind of falling apart. It feels very homey. The building manager knows everyone and is super nice and talkative; the other tenants are mostly working families.

Though I should say - I think a lot of my fondness for the building is really fondness for my particular apartment. I didn't really like the studios I looked at, and felt the 1BRs were much nicer and a better value. The studios were like 700-800 and the size of my living room; for an extra hundred bucks I got a dining room, bedroom and two more closets.

Are you still taking pictures? If you can please post them. I will definitely consider SC if Regents doesn't have the 1BR apartment I want. I wish I had checked out more buildings while I was there.

Also anyone know if we get Cubs games on the southside? Or do we have to subject ourselves to the Hawk if we want local baseball? ETA: I guess watching the Cubs might be worse.... :?

There's also a bedroom but it's disgusting and there are limits to how much I'm willing to embarrass myself on the internet.

Alright, deposit deadlines has passed; most everyone here should know their decision. Let's get this thread rolling!

Have they decided for sure that the 171/2 will be replaced by some other form of transportation? I'm 95% going to live in Regents this year, but I'm curious about the bus situation.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
