Some classes require us to buy very similar books.

For example:

For the property class, the required books are:

Property 7th

and

Property 7th (loose leaf)

And LRW requires:

Redbook, 3rd ed

and

Redbook 2nd ed.


Probably a silly question:

For each of these instances, do we just pick one of the two books? Or is there some difference between the two editions that the professors require us to buy both?

The Property casebook is merely bound vs looseleaf (3 hole punch). It's the same text, you're just selecting your binding. It's possible the looseleaf includes an electronic copy (a lot of Aspen's looseleaf copies do).

As far as 2d vs 3d edition of the Redbook, I cannot imagine that there is much difference, to the point that you can probably use the 1st edition if you can find someone parting with it. It looks like the 3d edition just came out a month ago and has new chapters -- get that. (I can't imagine Garner changed that much from the older chapters).

I should add the caveat that this would only apply if your LRW prof doesn't have anything planned from the new chapters (emails, statutes, research papers, law-review articles, and book reviews), which they probably don't. All the same, the Redbook is one of those references you'll want to keep (note that the lowest used price is $35), so you may want these chapters for later.

Another thing to consider in buying books which you'll end up keeping: The Bluebook has an online version for $50/3 years or $32/1 year... it's searchable. (The search function could be better, but it's still more efficient than the alternative.) Renewals are $15/year. http://legalbluebook.com

Nope, I haven't purchased it (I actually purchased the Texas Penal Code 2012 as it's noted as "required" by Co-Op).

Looks like I'll have to swap it/make other arrangements with the bookstore.

I also purchased the newer version of The Redbook (3rd), which is noted as required by Co-Op (along with the 2nd); however, on the 1L textbook list PDF, the older version is required (2nd).....

The whole release of the 1L textbook list along with what's "required" on the Co-Op bookstore is a mess.

Agreed. It's been a little frustrating, this has been like the 3rd or 4th time something has been released and then afterwards they're like "Oh hey guys, just kidding." Both the book list and the tuition bill thing have been like that and those were in the same day.

Thanks for the head's up; I'm heading to the Co-Op tomorrow since I won't have time to wait and see if the book list changes again/updates. At least I'm excited about the book discussion reading (I went with Anonymous Lawyer, it's pretty good so far).

Does anyone know how the LRW sections are determined? Seems like sections are divided into 3 small sections (ABC), but the LRW classes have 4 small sections for each big section.

Not that it matters, BUT

You have 2 small section classes your first semester. This will be only people in 3C (or whatever). Your large section classes will be with all of 3 (so, 3a, 3b, and 3c will all be in that class).

What is it?

Con law, civ pro, torts, LRW. The times are kind of weird too, but at least I only have one class on friday

We do. Chesney, Einhorn, Mullenix, Stapleton

I didn't have any, but Chesney is the favorite prof of the females, because he's psudo-attractive. Mullenix is not supposed to be very fun; a few of my friends had her and didn't have much good to say about her.

And sorry for the multi-post.

Another note: KEEP THE PROPERTY LOOSELEAF. It sold for like $70 at the end of last semester for me.

In my 1L (elsewhere) there was a guy in my LRW who showed up at orientation late because the day before he had been at orientation elsewhere when he got a call offering more money, so he flew up the following AM. After orientation he had to go out looking for an apartment.

I am curious about the incoming transfer class size, since it may be an indication of the size of our graduating class. In the past, UT took very few transfers, but I see lots of acceptances on TLS this year and UT has an APPLY TO TRANSFER NOW link on their admissions page.

Dean said they took a hit financially with the small class size. They're accepting more transfers to bring in more money without hurting their medians. The thing is, he made it sound like it was a one year thing and that the incoming class size would go up this year.

It could be possible that UT Law is accepting more LLM students as well.
