Do any other Internet service providers cover the area near the school?

P.S. I am going to be living in the Far West (up north a bit). "The Ridge".
Grande and UVerse are the only other ones I know of, but I don't know where they cover.

Also, from what I've heard, UVerse>Grande>TW... but they all suck.

FWIW I lived in north-central Austin, had uverse and loved it.
ETA don't get TW, their service is awful and constantly cuts out. I dunno about Grande but TW sucks.

Actually, now that I think about it, my roommate and I had Uverse 1L year, and it was better than Time Warner.

Maybe all that really is bad about UVerse is that you can only get it at certain parts of Austin.

I have had issues out the ass with my TW internet service, and my current apartment is less than 1/4 mile from one of their major service centers :/

I think it depends on whether or not the apartment complex was wired correctly; TW claims my problems come from shitty contract work when my complex was remodeled, but I dunno if I believe them.

ANYWAY, went to the April 5th ASD, and I'm very impressed. The employment numbers from the ABA were broken down for us at a panel and things are looking pretty good provided you aren't a moron. I was hoping not to leave Austin and it looks like I won't have to!

I am very excited about Google Fiber. $300 one time fee for 5 MBPS internet... forever, and $70.00 per month for 1GBPS speed (plus taxes and instalation fees) - free wifi router with firewall. The real question is this... will Google be able to lay cable, install servers, and deploy services any time soon?

Some of the articles I have been reading suggest that while Google's services and pricing are unmatched, the resources necessary to upstart a market city are enormous. Some websites estimate that installation in all major US markets would exceed $140,000,000,000.00 (140 Billion), an enormous undertaking. For this reason, many don't believe that Google Fiber will ever seriously pose a challenge to current industry giants, simply because Google's creative interests don't coorespond with the financial investments requisite to challenge Time Warner in most major markets that they have control over.

Bottom line: Google Fiber is scheduled to make an official announcement this week that they will begin servicing the Austin area, and I am hoping that they also release a date... so I can sign up!

No kidding...I've got a buddy here in Austin whose TW internet is uncapped and he says that the Google fiber speeds are still like many multiples faster.

On an unrelated note, I found out this weekend that the law library has every season of every Law and Order on DVD so that pretty much seals it for me.

What Big 10 school did you go to?

Also...

Concerning Google Fiber's speed, 1 GBPS is so much that it is also many times more than a person could ever use given current data usage. The advantage will come when 3D printers are less expensive and more developed, as well as ambiant interaction technologies (when you can "be" with someone all day that is physically accross the country or planet).

Other industry giants will argue that since an individual could never utilize 1 GBPS true bandwith, Google Fiber is excessive and not truly more advantageous.

But what they will do about Google's $300 - free 5mbps option... well, they can't beat it.

Repost from the application thread, but from the form I got during my fin aid meeting, I think everyone gets 3k/yr in need-based grants (except maybe if you aren't poor).

The priority deadline was March 15, so they probably are just sending out the awards to those who submitted before then. But this shouldn't mean you won't get anything, afaik!

Actually I just checked, I submitted my FAFSA mid February. I have email from Texas saying they received it and said it is valid. They also gave me a good scholarship. Im hoping they are just sending out the information in waves.

There is a gap in financial aid coverage (COA and actual loans provided). Also, the estimated student budget has changed recently.

Two weeks ago the budget was:

Tuition $33,162
Books & Supplies $1,170
Room & Board $10,946
Travel $1,242
Misc $3,054
Total $49,574

(Loan Fees weren't included)

Now it's:

Tuition $33,162
Books & Supplies $1,294
Room & Board $12,420
Travel $1,470
Misc $3,890
Loan fees $1,200
Total $53,436

(On another note, the total on the Shopping Sheet is listed as $53,536.) [So, add $100 to the newer estimated budget figure.]

The Shopping Sheet notes a loan option of $49,236/year. So, there's a gap in coverage of $4,200-4,300.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
