I liked 25th and South better anyway. They didn't card. And I didn't fear for my virtue as much when walking there.PennBull wrote:noapshntn wrote:Have they reopened the liquor store at 41st and Market?Nickg415 wrote: Its over off 40th and barring st.
Apparently opening one at 43rd and Chestnut, though.PennBull wrote:noapshntn wrote:Have they reopened the liquor store at 41st and Market?Nickg415 wrote: Its over off 40th and barring st.
Just in time for me to leave, cool.SportsFan wrote:Apparently opening one at 43rd and Chestnut, though.PennBull wrote:noapshntn wrote:Have they reopened the liquor store at 41st and Market?Nickg415 wrote: Its over off 40th and barring st.
Yeah no not happening. The police station is at 41st and I...no.SportsFan wrote:Apparently opening one at 43rd and Chestnut, though.PennBull wrote:noapshntn wrote:Have they reopened the liquor store at 41st and Market?Nickg415 wrote: Its over off 40th and barring st.
While I think you're right on the ratio, most places 1Ls live in center city are actually closer than University City since they're usually close to the river. UC is cheaper, but not more convenient (especially when you factor in what a pain cabs can be sometimes).SportsFan wrote:I'd even say its more like 60/40 who live in UC during 1L, at least in my experience. But yeah, a lot of people are moving to CC next year so it'll probably move from 60/40 to like 25/75. There are definitely times I wish I had lived in CC during 1L (mostly because there is a lot more to do there) but I definitely don't regret living in UC at all.PennBull wrote:1L it's just about 50/50. 2L is when a mass exodus to center city occurs though for sure.shntn wrote:I know a lot of Penn Law people, very few of whom live west of the Schyulkill.
I think living in UC during 1L can be a big advantage because its pretty much guaranteed to be a shorter walk (or bike ride, if you're into that) than from CC (unless you're at 2400 Chestnut or w/e). You're not gonna want to be bringing your books back and forth all the time because they're so heavy, and having a locker at the law school means if you're <20 minutes away, its really easy to stop by whenever you want and get your stuff and go to the library or whatever. But this may not apply to everyone, since I LOVE having a locker and use it all the time.
Depends on what you see as convenient, IMO. If you mean convenient to social activities and bars and restaurants and w/e, then yes, CC absolutely, 100% wins. But I still think UC is more convenient than CC in terms of the law school (which, IMO, should be a big consideration when deciding where to live 1L year). I live just under 1 mile from the law school. An equivalent location in CC is 21st and chestnut. So yeah, there is a really small section of CC that is closer to the law school than UC, but in general I don't agree that CC is more convenient.Nelson wrote:While I think you're right on the ratio, most places 1Ls live in center city are actually closer than University City since they're usually close to the river. From what I can tell, only like a quarter (at the most) of the class is gonna be in Philly this summer. Most people are going to NY, DC, or whatever secondary markets they want to work in permanently. If you want to stay in Philly 1L summer (and aren't really picky about what you want to do), you definitely can (though tbf I think you could say that about any market).JamesDean1955 wrote:Do most 1L's end up working in Philly or elsewhere for 1L summer from what you guys have seen? Also, I'm assuming public interest jobs are more difficult to get in NYC (e.g. Manhattan or Bronx DA's office vs. Philly DA's office)?
ETA: Are 1L summer jobs with the USAO Eastern District of Pennsylvania pretty hard to get? And for the difficult to get PI/government jobs, should you mainly focus on grades or should you do a ton of pro-bono/PI stuff 1L year as well?
This is related to the housing talk b/c I'm trying to figure out if I'll be in Philly next summer or not.
I'll continue this in the Penn Students Taking Questions thread. Might be a good idea to leave this one for roommate searching, orientation news, etc.SportsFan wrote:From what I can tell, only like a quarter (at the most) of the class is gonna be in Philly this summer. As for getting more difficult things, AFAIK its down to grades and your pre-law school resume. By the time you're doing interviews (January/February), you probably won't have much pro bono/PI stuff to talk about. A decent amount of people don't even do pro bono work 1L year (just because they don't want to get distracted and whatnot).

UVA told me they would get back to me, but from the UVA threads, it's not clear yet whether they are just jerking me around.Gisney wrote:JamesDean1955 wrote:^^Good thinking, thanks
Are you still waiting on money from UVA? or are you fore sure in Philly this Fall?
That sounds fair. How the game is played. That was what I was trying before I found out about Toll.JamesDean1955 wrote:UVA told me they would get back to me, but from the UVA threads, it's not clear yet whether they are just jerking me around.Gisney wrote:JamesDean1955 wrote:^^Good thinking, thanks

TBH, I'm mainly trying to use UVA's offer to further my scholarship negotiations at Penn (which I would attend anyways at my current scholarship bc it's my first choice and I'm fairly comfortable with the $$ I have).
That said, I'm not being disingenuous with UVA because they are my second choice out of the schools I've been admitted to, and if they offered enough $$, I could be swayed from Penn.
The tl;dr answer is: 99% sure I'm going to Penn (barring some act of God lol). Already started Philly apartment hunting and ready to deposit asap either on or before the deadline next week.
Congrats on the Toll again! I'd faint if I had a free ride/near free ride to Penn lol.
I answered you in the admit forum but here you go again.testaker wrote:Has anyone who was at Penn ASW or Preview Day received their travel reimbursement in the mail yet?

We'll give you about a month and a half to breathe. It'll be silence for a quite a while. Don't need anything from you yet; have a beer.Gisney wrote:JamesDean1955 wrote:How's the housing search going y'all? I've basically just been using Craiglist up to this point.
Eh slowly. I am using Craigslist as well as a few others.
Anyone else feel a little lost after the deposit? I used to get an avg of 20 emails a day from different schools but after depositing and withdrawing it had been zilch.
I realize there is nothint to say at this point but Crazy how you go from constant updates and paper work to nothing.
Makes me think I dreamt the whole thing.
Calm before the storm I suppose....
I know, I'm ashamed at how excited I initially was by that Penn Law E-Brief email they sent today.Gisney wrote:JamesDean1955 wrote:How's the housing search going y'all? I've basically just been using Craiglist up to this point.
