I got an email about an hour ago saying that my financial aid award (which was 0 before) was revised - when I checked thru the link, it said that I had been awarded a Dean's scholly.

Hmm. Well good luck wherever you wind up. I'll be e-mailing them now asking for whatever they offered you.

Has anyone had their need grant awards finalized yet? I sent in all the tax stuff weeks ago...the fact that it is an "estimated" grant leaves a bit of uncertainty here...

I submitted all my tax documents originally and it still reads as an estimate. I think it will remain an estimate because they reserve the right to change each year's amount of aid according to any changes in you and your family's income.

So can we safely assume that these awards won't increase or decrease before the start of the school year? I'm sure they reserve the right to change it in future years for the reasons you cited, but my understanding of the decision letter is that we will have our awards finalized once: 1) they review all of our tax documents, and 2) they have finalized the 2013-2014 school budget.

It would seem a little silly if they didn't give a definitive confirmation as to how much aid we are being awarded for the 2013-2014 year.

I asked this on the applicants page, but got no response.

For those of you with merit aid - did the merit scholarship come as part of the Financial Aid (need-based) decision letter, or separately?

I think the answer to your question is both of the above. I know of two different scenarios (but there could be more):

Scenario 1: people received separate merit aid letters (although these could have been for only Wilson and Levy awards);

Scenario 2: people received the financial aid decision letter, and either (1) only received a need aid award with no mention of merit (such as myself), or (2) received a need aid award and were told how much merit award they also qualified for.

I'm really hoping that by the end of April, everyone will clearly be told exactly how much need and merit aid award they will receive, if any.

Checking in and can't wait to get started!

I'll be looking for a roommate (male) if anyone still needs to find somewhere to live.

Awesome, welcome! Will be sending mine soon 99.9% likely. Looking to live in University City for 1L year, then maybe Center City after that. When are you going to start apartment hunting? Curious to know of any tips, etc.

Also, a welcome to Gisney as well!

I live in Philly (Manayunk) right now. So I will have a good opportunity to scout out most of the big apartment complexes. I'll try to post a summary of each building I look at. One note, I have a gf and a dog that will be with me, so I will only be looking at dog friendly locations (which in Philly is almost everywhere)

Don't get me wrong, I like dogs, but I don't think I could live directly across from another dog person ever again. I live in a complex in the burbs right across from someone with 2 dogs (it's a super dog friendly place with a dog park and all that), and it's a nightmare for me with barking dogs all the time lol.

To everyone that has accepted, or will accept:

Welcome! We have a great time. I'm helping to plan your Orientation Week (yes, it's a week, but only half of Fri/Sat is actual school stuff), and it's going to be awesome.

Checking in! Visiting Philly next Thursday and then deciding between Penn and UMich, but have not been active in the Penn threads up until this point. Anything I need to check out while I'm in town?

Anyone know when the College Certification is due? I'm traveling and can't find the info on the ASW.

Get a cheesesteak from Steve's in center city. Other than that, you could check out university city a bit to see if you'd rather live there or in center city.

Just to reiterate, make sure to do a lot of the optional orientation stuff! Its all a lot of fun, and best of all, its a great way to meet people (especially people not in your section).

Also, idk how other schools do orientation, but I really liked having the intro legal writing classes during orientation.

Absolutely IMO. The center city location is pretty new (they used to only have 2 locations in northeast philly), but they transferred a lot of staff from the other 2 locations so its just as good.

Pat's and Gino's are touristy shitholes that make some of the worst cheesesteaks in Philadelphia. There are 300 other hole-in-the-wall places that have been making cheesesteaks for years, but are smaller shops so everything just tastes a bit better. While it does have a bunch of locations, Lee's Hoagie Hut makes the best in Philly anywhere you try them.

Good to know. My brother has lived in Philly for 2-3 years now and says there are better places but he still likes Pat's and Gino's (I've tried both myself and thought they were ok, but I'm not the one living in Philly (yet) lol).
