Thanks - though that sounds awful for someone with a lot of stuff. I guess there aren't like, big management companies that have a number of buildings where I could drop in for a weekend and look at a bunch?

oh, if you can come for a weekend, call a realtor (not Citihabitats) and have them set up like 10 views in your price/location range. Do this 3 weeks to 1 month in advance

ETA: come in that time, get in touch with them around 1.5 months out

There is one big management company I know of that does rentals - archstone. The good thing about big companies that own buildings like this is that they have their own realtors in the building so there are no broker fees.

I was going to mention archstone too. I've used them here in DC. You can lease online, they're really easy to deal with, etc. Their NYC prices are way out of my budget, but if you're willing to pay a premium for convenience, they could be worth it.

Yea, I will never get used to NYC rent. Dear lord. Thanks, in any case.

Sometimes when I want to fantasize about the fancy, amenity-rich apartment I will inevitably live in after law school, when I have SOOOO much income and absolutely NOOOO loan payments and ALLLL that free time to enjoy the roof deck, I go on Archstones' website and look at their floor plans.

lol.

Every single person I know living in other buildings/walk ups/etc. pay more, get less, and don't know that they can get better deals in the city.

The reason that bit of advice seemed odd to me is that I don't think anyone needs to live in a luxury high-rise as a student. The amenities that make those buildings more expensive are generally intended to appeal to families and wealthy people who don't want to trek out into the city to occupy themselves.

Some of your friends may pay more and get less than you have in your apartment--I don't know your friends. But I can guarantee you that many (/most?) people could pay considerably less than you pay right now and get enough, which strikes me as the right standard for most students whose net worth will be steadily diminishing for three consecutive years.

Oh swimp my comment was not directed to you. Jammaster called living in a trump dumb. I had to prove I pay less than the walk ups around me to save my sensibility as a student.

Soooo of those of you still waiting on an appeal that need to respond by the 4/22 deadline, are you planning on following up with them at all? I'm really hoping I hear from them before Friday.

Just sent my housing application in for a family housing studio in Mercer. Probably wishful thinking for an entering student, but, worth a try. :/

April 22 is the deadline for anyone who received a scholarship, named or otherwise. I think some named scholarships had earlier deadlines, not sure on that front. I got the standard Dean's Scholarship and April 22 is my deadline.

Some of the IILJs have until 5/3, actually.

What are you thinking re: CLS v. NYU, BTW? I've been semi-stalking you on TLS...

Oh my bad. For some reason I thought that studioes were virtually impossible to get for entering students. I guess that only applies to the non-family housing ones.

Hahaha glad to hear. Hope you've been enjoying my psycho babble. Right now, I'm leaning towards CLS. Slightly more money and their campus housing is a huge plus for me. If NYU bumps their offer up to $75k (30, 30, 15), then it's definitely NYU. If I get the $50k or $62.5k offer, it's a toss-up, and I'll probably just flip a coin while breathing into a paper bag. Hopefully visiting CLS on Monday (4/22, lolnot) will help me make my decision.

My SO informs me that the coin-flip is a good approach; apparently this is how English PhDs pick their schools... I guess when you're getting paid $25k+ to take classes you don't bother with data.

The coin flip is a completely legit strategy; you find out who you're secretly hoping for while it's in the air.

Truth. I've already employed this strategy a few times this cycle to rule schools out. A solid way to decide your future, indeed.

Ok so I emailed the fin aid office to request an extension of the deposit deadline about a week ago and still no word. Just tried to call them and there were "no operators available" and then I was disconnected. Tried to call admissions and they couldn't really do anything....

Anyone else having similar struggles?

Weird, I just called them and talked to someone who was super nice and helpful about it all. Told me to email the admitted students email address (NYULaw-Admits@nyu.edu) to request an extension. It sounded like a lot of us are in similar situations and that there's a good chance we'll get extensions, but she also was not involved in the decision process for granting that, so, grain of salt, etc.

Interesting. I'm going to call this afternoon and ask about the status of my appeal. How long did you get an extension for?
