Raise your virtual hand if your heart just stopped when you received an email from the NYU School of Law, only to discover it was the February eNews letter.

My ASW has been down for a few days. Is this true for anyone else?

Are most of you waiting an extended period of time going for named scholarships? I've had it in for about ten days and I'm still under review, but not going for any named. I'm wondering if the significant "need based" situation in my app might be slowing the process.

I didn't apply for any named schollies. 10 days was about exactly right for me. I also sent my stuff in earlyish -- they might have more of a backlog now.NoodleyOne wrote:Are most of you waiting an extended period of time going for named scholarships? So it looks like CLS got rid of the mandatory B- on their curve, and now it's basically a A/A-/B+/B system. Anyone know if NYU will follow? iirc there's still a 4-8% target for B- grades right?

Is there an active NYU vs. Columbia thread? The only ones I can find are from last cycle.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
I'm seriously considering NYU (pending $$ decisions from NYU and others) but super intimidated by NYC! I've always lived in cities, but nothing that intense. I randomly checked out craigslist the other day and even the whole fee/no fee category was a new freaky thing for me. So for those in the know...
- what's the best way to find an apartment in NYC? (especially if you're trying to do it from out of town or in a short visit)
- any suggested areas/neighborhoods?
- what should I expect to pay for a studio or 1 bedroom? (not sure if my boyfriend is moving with me) (I know having roommates would be cheaper but I'm a little older and just really done with having a roommate...)
Unfortunately NYU housing isn't an option because I have a pet. Do any current students have thoughts about whether being in the 1/3 of 1Ls not living on campus would significantly affect my happiness/social life/anything else?
Mil gracias!

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
There's a lot of good info about this in the Ask a NYU 1L thread that Jam started. I have a pet too and personally, I plan on looking in Brooklyn since it seems pretty pet (dog) friendly and much cheaper than the Village. Others are more partial to the UES or UWS, which has a similar if not shorter commute to NYU than Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, there seem to be a prevalence of studios/1 bedrooms for $1200-$1500, which is my budget, but that can go much higher depending on the neighborhood. From what I've seen, UES/UWS is slightly more expensive, but you can still find good deals if you're willing to look for them.risa wrote:I'm seriously considering NYU (pending $$ decisions from NYU and others) but super intimidated by NYC! Anyone else who submitted Need Access on 2/1 (or earlier) that still hasn't received their package but did NOT apply for a named scholarship? If not, it seems like we're all just waiting on the finalist interviews.
Maybe NYU will do this with named scholarships?

So, so, so happy to be checking in. My decision certainly isn't settled, but I'm leaning strongly towards joining you all at NYU this fall.

Got my award today. $20k each year except $10k for third unless I go PI. $50k from a T6 is really surprising and generous to me considering my #s! Definitely going to try to make it up for the March ASW. NYU wasn't even on my radar since I've never been to NYC but those numbers are reallllly nice. They're so speedy!

Last week, Feb 11/12/13. VERY fast turnaround from them, I'm grateful. I'm booking a flight tonight. Little worried about living in NYC and navigating around but I won't know unless I visit, and I definitely have to give them a shot based on $/ranking/research I've done!

Anyone know how flexible NYU is in negotiation aid? I just got my award today for $0 wondering if that's likely final or if its possible to negotiate a little $.

Congrats to the new scholarship money! Did any of you also apply to a named scholarship?
In terms of negotiating, I think your best bet is if you have other offers from T14, you could use those to negotiate something from NYU, though I'm sure they wouldn't match anything below the T6. It's worth a shot though.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
Congrats to the new acceptances and schollies.
Anecdote: I am currently living in a 1BR in West Harlem for $1350. It's only about 1/2 hour from NYU. It's small, though--about 300 sq ft, maybe a little less. For apartment hunting (this is my 4th apt in the city) I scroll through a few weeks' worth of Craigslist ads to figure out the cheapest price for what I want, then by the time I actually am visiting apartments, I have knocked it down to 3-4 and can visit all of them in a couple of days. I don't know what Brooklyn is like, but cheap Manhattan apartments turn over really quickly, so you have to kinda watch for what you want at the right price and then snap it up.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
How soon could you all access that financial aid status page? I know that access the day after acceptance is super unlikely, but I have already submitted FAFSA and Need Access before acceptance so it might be sped up a bit. At the moment, that status page doesn't recognize me as a user.
(And to be clear, I know I'll get $0 from NYU. But the sooner they tell me that, the sooner I can make a heartfelt appeal for some small amount of financial assistance because my family don't get no monies.)
