Is a car necessary while living in Ann Arbor near or at the school? A friend told me a car is a must to get around in winter.

Can't figure out whether to do ASW or a regular visit for Mich. Going to Duke on April 4th and ASW would mean a separate trip just to A2. Gahhhh. Worth it?

I went on a regular visit already (scheduled before I got in, but I got in like three days before the visit, haha) and it was nice, but I think the ASW will be a lot more in-depth. Granted, I only live 3 hours away, but I still am looking forward to some of the things like financial aid panels and talking firsthand with the students.

It's a matter of preference, but I think you'll get more out of an ASW. Do you live pretty far away?

I'm definitely bringing a car, but I'm pretty nervous about parking, since the LC doesn't have a dedicated lot...

California. I'd say so.

Haha, fair enough! Well, in your case, I would just make it if and when you can make it, and try to schedule an appointment with a financial aid officer.

If anyone committing to the LC and summer starting needs a place to sublet, PM me! I'll be subletting a fully furnished room in a 6 bedroom/2 bathroom house literally a block away from the law school. It's normally $700, but I'll cut you a deal, including all utilities, internet, free laundry in the apartment, PARKING in a lot right next to the house, a sweet ass porch for grilling/hanging in the summer, and I'm pretty sure the landlord will allow pets. House was completely gutted and redone last summer, so all appliances etc. are new. Granite countertops, two fridges, high tech microwave that sings, wood floors. All of the other housemates are grad students and they're all chill and sociable folks. Move in/move out dates SUPER flexible. I'll even include supplements and outlines in the deal! PM me if you're interested in hearing more!

Anyone have insight into when the new student budget is generally released for the upcoming year?

I received the updated info with my award notice (post FAFSA-filing), but it doesn't seem to have been updated on the school's website yet. Keep in mind, these numbers are for SUMMER START.

3 SEMESTERS of tuition and 11 MONTHS of living:

Tuition: 73,895
Budget: 23,425
Total COA: 97,320

Numbers were not broken down by semester, sorry fall starters, but financial aid is disbursed 30% summer, 35% fall, 35% winter, so you could use that to get a rough estimate.

From my award, it says:

*The tuition figures are an estimate until the Regents of the University approve the final figures
in June

I'm assuming you received the same thing, but here are the projected numbers for fall starters:

Budget - OOS: $69,800

Tuition - OOS: $52,784
Living costs: $17,016

Hey Prospective Students!

If you're thinking about coming to Michigan as a summer starter and you think you might need summer housing, you should consider teaming up with another student and subletting my 2BR apartment! If you're interested, my flatmate and I would be willing to give you a tour during one of the Preview Weekends!

Here's the property description, please PM me for pictures and more info.

Description: LIVE HALF A BLOCK FROM THE LAW SCHOOL IN A BEAUTIFUL 2-BEDROOM APARTMENT!!! We live in a really great third floor apartment in a converted house on Monroe, so it's super close to everything - within sight of the law school and Doms (aka where you will be spending significant time after-hours). It has an open floor plan, eat-in kitchen, wood floors, and lots of natural light. The bedrooms are big and furnished, and both of the double beds were new in August when we moved in. One of the bedrooms has French doors and the other has a big window that opens onto the top of the fire escape/roof - it has proven handy in more than one situation. PLUS there is an AC unit in each bedroom, which becomes critical very quickly. We each pay $675 per month, per room, but will of course negotiate on summer rent!

I too am interested in subletting my 2 bedroom apartment to law students over the summer! My apartment is a brief 6 minute walk from the law school on the corner of Division/Jefferson St. It's furnished, and inexpensive (we each pay $575/month). Price is definitely negotiable. Send me a message if you're interested!

Thanks!

Incoming 1Ls, if you aren't sure you want to live in the lawyer's club but still want the communal aspect of living with other law students, consider applying to Phid.

Phi Delta Phi, or The Phid House, is that law school fraternity. It is a house of 25 law students (we try to keep an even mix of 1Ls/2Ls/3Ls, and usually have an LLM student or two as well) one block (.1 miles) from the law school.

It's super cheap! Rent is $450/month. ($350/month during the summer)

It's a 9 month lease! (If you live in the house during the year and want to store your stuff there for the summer/keep your room intact for when you return, you can do that by "reserving" your room for one month's summer rent, and we won't sublet it).

It's a fantastic community -- there are always people hanging out in the common areas, we share outlines and advice about course selection/professors, etc., and, since there are 25 of us, we have varied enough interests that if I want to go out to Rick's one night, there are people to do that with, but if I want to go to a Michigan hockey game or stay in and play board games another night, I have people to do that with, too.

ETA: There are fun perks! Like a library full of casebooks and supplements to borrow, multiple sweet porches to hang out and grill on, a huge projector tv for all your Game of Thrones and sports viewing needs, and a huge kitchen.

Pictures and information are available on our website: phidhouse.org. Applications are due one week after the second ASW and are NOT rolling (or binding).

We're having a wine and cheese meet and greet with tours of the house on both ASW Fridays from 7pm - 9pm. There will also be a phiddie on each of the housing panels for you to ask questions of. At the second ASW, wine & cheese will be followed by another fun little get together, PHID PARTY.

PM me or e-mail Phidboard@umich.edu with questions :)

Since we haven't signed any leases yet, I think we're still free to look around.

Oh sweet. I will be apartment-hunting/perusing (?) Saturday morning (not a jogger/runner) and afternoon, I think.

I think I'm staying Saturday too! Maybe we should agree on a shirt color or something. Or agree to meet at a specific spot? lol

Did some digging and found some answers halfway through this page. Consensus seems to be that having a car isn't necessary for 1Ls.

The conventional wisdom is that you definitely don't need a car; you do, however, need to Know someone who has a car. Most everything is walkable, but grocery shopping can be a hassle if you're relying on the bus system.
