Just got an email from Dean Hoye estimating the incoming class at "205 new first year students." I know people were wondering about this a few pages back, so I thought I would share.

I'm so excited

205 sounds awesome to me. Very excited to start. Good luck to every one on the waitlist. The email stated that later this week they expect to admit a couple off the waitlist.

Hey has anyone heard back about the travel stipends from Duke's Open House? My friend and I haven't gotten anything back yet...

I got mine probably 2 days ago but I am close to NC so it may take longer for it to reach you. It comes in a simple envelope with only the check inside.

I got mine late last week.

Very excited about the small class size.

YES.. It was great to read that email from Dean Hoye! I'm excited. It also stated that the summer JD/LLM etc stuff was full at 35.

Yeah, I didn't realize the summer class was that small -- for some reason, I assumed that was the size for a JD/LLM in XYZ alone. That's pretty cool.

Best places to live as a 1L are Alexan Garrett and Addington Farms - a lot of law students live in these two complexes that are right next to each other. Other places to check out for housing are Pinnacle (cheaper, not that nice), Alexan Place, The Lofts (very nice but expensive), Trinity Commons (nice but expensive), and houses that are up for rent. I lived in Alexan Garrett my 1L summer and loved it, but rent went up so we moved to a nice house.

Can you elaborate on the differences between Addington Farms and Pinnacle Ridge? Seems like the price difference is about ~200/mo for a 1BR. Is Addington Farms substantially nicer / more law students?

Any current Duke students have a grasp on the number of 1Ls landing SA positions at NC firms or firms in general?

I would like to practice in NC and am interested in knowing the grades needed to get a 1L position in Charlotte or the Triangle.

Addington is nicer than Pinnacle, plus better location in my opinion. Pinnacle is really old and outdated. They have updated some rooms (appliances) but very few. They have roughly an equal number of law students, but Addington is right next to Alexan Garrett, so more law students in the area.

As a IL you will have SIP (Spring Interview Program) which is a mini-OCI for local firms. Several of my friends received jobs in Charlotte and Raleigh through this. Off the top of my head some of the firms were Womble Carlyle, Balch and Bingham, and Alston and Bird. Grades are important as always, but also make sure you convince them you want to stay in North Carolina. There is no grade cut-off point, but being in the top half is usually helpful.

This maybe a stupid question.. maybe an upper level person can answer. Looking at the Duke Law calendar, exams start on Dec 9th. Is it crazy to plan on visiting family over Thanksgiving? Or is the workload so crazy that most people stay put? I ask because my family usually does a reunion sortof thing and folks are buying tickets and I'm wondering what to do. Thanksgiving weekend is Nov 27th-Dec 1st.

Some people go home for Thanksgiving and study for finals while they are there, or come back early, I wouldnt recommend it, but it's doable, mostly since you start studying for finals around Nov 1st.

Is your family reunion an annual event? If so, I would seriously consider skipping it. You're going to want to have as much time available as possible for studying, particularly during your first semester when you probably aren't studying very efficiently.

If any current Duke Law students are perusing this thread, could you speak about any thoughts on the "bridge to practice" fellowships? Do these school funded jobs really help students find real employment? Are students in the program optimistic of the outcome of these short term positions?

I'm hoping for other outcomes but in case I find myself in a bind and unemployed, I want to know what this program has to offer.

Thanks

This may be a rookie question, but do scholarship funds get disbursed straight to us or are they immediately credited toward our tuition bill?

I know this has been discussed in general on other forums, but I was interested in seeing what other incoming students were thinking about laptops. I have been debating between sticking with my PC or going with a mac for the start of the year and haven't been able to make a decision yet. Current students, do you think there is any benefit to one over the other? Incoming students, have you made a decision yet? I'm excited to be up in Durham and meet all of you in Fall!

Probably going with a Mac just because Ive had a real bad experience with my PCs always breaking down. Is there a reason to consider one or the other. I assumed that they all serve the same purpose.
