About once every two hours, I bounce between this thread, the Facebook group, and the Lawnet forum and nobody is saying anything! I clearly need some constant stream of non-information to replace the craziness of status checking.

I have so much excess energy. My job is so slow in the summer. It's gonna be a long three months.

You can solve this problem by saying something on lawnet!cws277 wrote:About once every two hours, I bounce between this thread, the Facebook group, and the Lawnet forum and nobody is saying anything! I clearly need some constant stream of non-information to replace the craziness of status checking.

Haha. I think I lack the gunner instinct to post on lawnet just yet... Maybe soon.beepboopbeep wrote:Ugh, I know. I feel like the gunnerest of gunners.ph5354a wrote:The longer this goes on, with only two posts, the more embarrassed I get.beepboopbeep wrote:

Seriously. And I liked the whole section on cubmail, which isn't even used anymore for law students. Nonetheless, I'm glad they reviewed the difference between reply and reply all, because lord knows some people could use a refresher course on that topic.cws277 wrote:Did you notice that it was probably the most hilarious thing of all time? When did you deposit? I got a payment confirmation right when I submitted my deposit online, and yesterday (about a week later) I got an email with instructions on how to set up my email and lawnet, etc.jbagelboy wrote:Also did any of you get an email confirming your deposit? I'm going to have the same problem with Team Fortress 2, which is now occupying about 20% of my life.jbagelboy wrote:I actually know what this means. damn.learntolift wrote:well gm doesn't come out until the 8th, so no im notarrggg wrote:learntolift, you're not actually in GM are you? I just had a really informative meeting with financial aid if anyone wants clarification on the whole IBR/LRAP thing. The info online is a little opaque.

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
I don't know if you guys were able to glean the following from the info online but I will explain it anyway! Columbia's LRAP covers those in qualifying full time employment (standard nonprofits, basically, doesn't include clerkships, includes private practice that primarily service underrepresented groups I think). There are three ways to utilize it. In the first option, CLS will pay the total of your loan amount, less 34.5% of your income above $50k. No IBR necessary. In the second scenario, you go on IBR, and the school will cover your entire IBR payment (15% of your income over 150% of the poverty level), less 34.5% of your income over $70k. This option is for those not afraid of negative amortization. The third way also involves IBR--CLS will pay an amount that corresponds to a ten year repayment schedule even if you are on a 25 year IBR repayment plan, less 34.5% of your income above $50,000. This last one didn't seem too clear from the packet online, but I'm glad I know about it!
CLS pays your payments in the form of loans which are forgiven partially after 3 years in the program and completely after 5 years.
There are about 300 alums in the program, 5% of whom are also on IBR. Their debt ranges from ~$8,000 (she mentioned people working abroad who make basically no money and therefore need LRAP to cover even small amounts) to over $200,000. The fact that only 5% of people are also on IBR probably means something but I haven't analyzed it. What do you all think?
I don't know if this all makes sense, its early.

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
Thanks, frances! I think the low number of participants is probably a function of CLS' big law reputation/placement. I haven't looked into LRAP too much just because I'm gunning for big law. It's nice to have this kind of safety net, but I've also heard that PI jobs are as hard to get, if not harder, than big law, so I don't think it's something I can exactly fall back on.
Also, I know this is the case with NYU's LRAP, but is it safe to assume that most programs don't cover undergrad debt?

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
If you consolidate your loans under IBR, I think undergraduate is covered. I don't have any undergrad debt so I didn't ask, sorry! I don't know how that would work with the 10-year repayment while on IBR.ph5354a wrote:Thanks, frances! I'm sure prestigious PI is super hard for anyone to get but I think in general it's more about your work experience and demonstrated commitment to the "cause" that will land you a non-preftigious PI job. So for someone whose resume screams big law gunner, PI will be basically impossible. That's what I tell myself, anyway.

Re: Columbia Class of 2016
Officially checking in! I'm very excited to head to Columbia next Fall (unless I get some favorable movement on the Harvard or Stanford Wait lists.)
Now that I've paid my deposit, I decided to stop being a ghost. A couple of questions:
Is the Fbook group that's been mentioned worth joining? Like is it an active discussion with other new Columbia students? Or was it a general group for everyone originally thinking of Columbia but not specifically attending?
Thanks to this thread, I was able to figure out how to register for Lawnet and set up my email even though I haven't received my explanatory email. Now I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the photo we need to upload can be changed later on or is it a permanent upload?
P.S. For interest's sake, I'm also a fan of SSB and would welcome an opportunity to play (although I admit I'm much more familiar with the original Nintendo version)
